1978 Mollarian Election

Postby Mollary » Sun Aug 11, 2013 11:01 am

Background
Mollary is a small country located in Rushmore with a growing history of democracy. This current election is the ninth in the nations history and it comes off the back of a poor term for a coalition of the 'Classical Party' and the 'New Alliance Party (NAP)' (lead by a Classical Party premier named John Jackson) which has lead to the collapse of the Mollarian economy with jobs being slashed, high rates of inflation and general stagnation. This has followed 24 years of relative economic stability firstly under the centrist 'New Mollary Party' (whoa re now the NAP) from 1946-62 under the leadership of Jane Wasley and then from 1962-1974 under Hugo Maswit of 'The Community Party', who are centre-left.

This election sees two new parties joining the original three; the far-left "Re-birth" party and the right-wing, nationalistic "National Cause" Party. These have splintered off from the more moderate parties as the tough economic climate has lead to the birth of political extremities that were previously non-existent in Mollary.

What you will be voting for
The result of the vote here will decide who the members of the house of nation will be after the next election. The House of Nation consists of 25 members who are elected by proportional representation. The premier is also a member of the house of nation and sits in it for debates and passing legislation; their deputy sits in the 105 seat house of community which is elected on a first past the post system.

Riots Ensue After National Cause Attack North Side of Sarioney

In the capital last night the right-wing National Cause party marched in with their followers and carried out a series of attacks on property and people on the northern side of the Mollarian capital of Sarioney. This attack is thought to have happened due to the high number of immigrants living in that part of town and the high number of off-licenses and government run shops which sell other drugs. The attacks have caused the death of three people; all of them part of Mollary's ethnic Dalkan population. The National Cause is running it, although they talk about it less than other more populist issues, as one of their policies that they will deport all ethnic Dalkans to Daulkania.

The attacks started at 6 in the evening when a mob of 300 members of the National Cause party descended on the Dalkan neighbourhoods in the North of Sarioney, centred around Sulk avenue; they attacked the two off-licences on the street, draining the alcoholic drinks into the drains and they beat the owners of the off-licenses, putting them both in hospital. They then burnt the government run off-license to the ground, killing the owner, a 37 year old man of Dalkan origins who is yet to be identified. They then went from house to house smashing windows and attacking people; including small children.

By 9 pm they were continuing their attack; however, by this point, members of the far-left 'Re-birth' party had organised themselves and had drawn many people from the North side of Sarioney to come together; the result was a riot between supporters of the growing far left and right wings. The police soon turned up, but it too another hour to break it up and end the riots. 78 people have been arrested so far and the Mayor of Sarioney, Peter Stalk (Community Party) has called it a "shameful night for all of us."

Results for House of Community Come In

The results for the 105 seat House of Community came out last night with the result being a hung parliament. The largest party in the lower house is now The Community Party with 41 seats. The election also saw the far left 'Re-Birth' party and the right-wing 'National Cause' party gain seats for the first time, breaking the three party deadlock.

PartySeats
The Community Party41
The Classical Party36
New Alliance Party16
Re-Birth8
National Cause4

The most likely outcome of this result will be an alliance between The Community Party and the NAP; the two parties have worked together in coalition many times before and always work well together.

Of the parties the happiest will probably be the Re-birth party and, strangely enough, the Classical Party. Harold Pullins of the Re-Birth party has stated that he was 'very pleased' with the result which saw them break into parliament and also with more seats than the right-wing/far-right National Cause. He also said that he is taking this as a 'small victory' over the 'fascist far-right'. The Classical Party will be pleased with the results as they were expected a much larger loss after a poor term leading the government; John Jackson stated that 'the damage is far less than we expected'.

There is still the House of Nation to be elected and in 3 days the polls will close leaving us the build of the new government.

Official message of the Libertarian People's Party

To: The New Alliance Party of Mollary
From: Ereinion i Ñoldo Gildorion nos-Nólimon, Party Chairperson of the LPP

Dear Mrs. Scaffold and whom else it may concern,

The Libertarian People's Party of the Heavenly State hereby sends its best of wishes to your party and its hope that the NAP will fare better in the House of Nation than it did in the House of Community. The LPP youth wing has expressed an interest in sending campaign volunteers to Mollary to assist the NAP in the second round of elections and, provided that Mollarian laws permits it, the LPP will be happy to throw a fundraiser for the NAP if there is yet time for such efforts to play a part in swaying Mollarian voters.

On another matter the Libertarian People's Party strongly advises the New Alliance Party to refrain from seeking a close relationship with the Communist Party which, even if it does seem to be more social democratic than communist, the LPP find it difficult to imagine being a good ally of the NAP. Good luck with your commendable efforts to demilitarize your country and secure minority rights.

Sincerely yours,
Ereinion Nólimon

To: Ereinion i Ñoldo Gildorion nos-Nólimon, Party Chairperson of the LPP
From: Helen Scaffold, Premiership Candidate for the NAP and National Representative

Dear Ereinion i Ñoldo Gildorion nos-Nólimon, Party Chairperson of the LPP,

We appreciate your concern for us in forming a coalition with the Communist Party, however we believe you have become confused as we are entering into coalition with 'The Community Party' who are a socially democratic party and have nothing to do with Communism. The far-left party in Mollary is the 'Re-birth' party; who we are attempting to keep out of government.

In terms of your offer for help in fundraising for our campaign we would love to take up your offer; the Mollarian Constitution, however, limits the endorsement of foreign political parties and groups to either a $5,000 contribution to party funds or 20 party members (youth or regular) to aid in the campaign.

We thank you for your endorsement of our party and we too will endorse you and your campaign within your nation in future elections.

Sincerely,
Helen Scaffold

Dear Mrs. Scaffold and whom else it may concern,

Though I shall not deny that the naming of the major centre-left party of Mallory has left me confounded the LPP understands that The Communist Party is not, as one would be inclined to think, communist. Even so the LPP, as a centrist party, is disinclined to view a party so ominously named with anything but reservation. Needless to say it is of course the NAP's prerogative.

Yohannesian based Yohannesische Bank will transfer to an account of the NAP's choosing a sum of USD 5,000 from the LPP and 16 members of The Young Libertarians, 3 members of The Libertarian Students and one LPP party secretary will be visiting Mallory to assist your campaign. Modest as this contribution undeniably is I hope it may prove of use.

Out of curiosity may I inquire as to what ideology, if any, the New Alliance Party subscribes to apart from centrism?

Sincerely yours,

HE Senator for Yôzâyan, Dr. Ereinion nos-Nólimon

With the polls closing the final results are:

Classical Party 9
The Community Party 11
New Alliance Party 5
Re-birth Party 5
National Cause 7

As a result the seats shall be distributed as follows:

The Community Party 7
Classical Party 7
National Cause 5
New Alliance Party 3
Re-Birth Party 3

The outcome of this is that the TCP-NAP will be three seats short of being able to take control in the house. This is the case as the Right-Wing National Cause party took 5 seats and the Far-Left Re-Birth party took three seats. Moreover the Classical Party took far more seats than expected, muscling the NAP out.

Leader of the Community Party and also the leader of the coalition to be formed, Leif Tarrent, has stated that he will seek a coalition with the Classical Party in order to form a ruling coalition with a majority and basing the coalition around a centrist policy. This will keep the extremist factions out, but disagreement is expected to be rife and John Jackson hasn't yet agreed to join a coalition; yet alone the platform. We will bring an update when more agreements have been reached.
