Many of the Muslims in Meryuma are refugees seeking a place to practice an egalitarian form of their faith without facing sexism or homophobia. As such, someone in a North Meryumi Muslim commune saying that homosexuality is filth and women should obey male house leaders would be seen by many as a hostile outsider trying to drag everyone back to theocratic social norms, even if they weren't coercive about their faith.
While we understand the wording could be confusing but Zafalis really don't have a strong stance against homosexuals and even though it's seen as a sin are practice is to pray for them in the hopes that they will find the light. And on the issue of misogyny is that yes the man is expected to be the leader of the house. But women have a high degree of indapendance and really the idea of Male leadership only shown in the creation of rules and laws in the house. But this loyalty to the husband the man is expected to protect the women. Spousal abuse is actually a serious crime as it breaks that tenet of mutual respect and someone can face serious jail time.
I could go on forever but I hope that clears some stuff up that shows we are not a horribly hatefully homophobic or misogynist group.
