There is a fine line between "modernizing", "sporterizing", and "ruining".

If I were to take, say, a M91 Mosin (not a 91/30 but an actual 91) and give it a synthetic stock but keep that wooden stock, then i'm two fold modernizing and sporterizing it.

If I were to cut down the rifles barrel and give it some rails, and a new stock, im ruining it, while modernizing it and sporterizing it.

To most, that would be the case. Unless the firearm is unable to serve it's purpose, it's not ruined for me.

Although I would never replace a rifle's wooden stock for anything else.

Just to clarify, with the earlier image, I don't necessarily have anything against modernising rifles, but there're only so many Lee-Enfields in the world, and if you're going to scrap the rifle body altogether you might as well find a current manufacture internal assembly with similar operating/firing characteristics and use that instead. God only knows what happened to the original wooden furniture - I probably don't. :<

Seems to me that if your going to buy a old military rifle and modernize it you would be better off buying a new rifle and Not worrying about it. figure the cheapest you'll find is a $100 mosin add about another 100 in a modern stock and another 50 for a scope and mount, you might as well just shell out 300 or so and buy a new rifle if your Going for a Modernized one.

This made me laugh, no joke!

Since you're all used to my crazy anyway, here's the spec sheet for my Mosin build and assumed performance:

  • Tula M91/30
  • Boyds Custom M91/30 Monte Carlo stock
  • Timney adjustable trigger and safety mechanism
  • Rock Solid Industries receiver-housed scope mount
  • Rock Solid Industries bent-bolt
  • Rock Solid Industries aluminum action screw pillars
  • Rock Solid Industries hexagonal action screws
  • Lothar-Walther 7.62x54mmR barrel blank; cut to 24 inches.
  • PO 8x56 L Pilade Pro optic with 1km PSO-style reticle
  • Gonna feed it some Hornady 174gr. BTHP 7.62x54mmR match-grade ammo: handloads later, most likely.
  • Free float the barrel, bed the action.
  • Should easily be sub-MOA.

The only original parts left on the rifle will be the receiver assembly and magazine assembly.

So the bolt handle cannot be changed without changing the entire bolt?

You can cut off your original bolt handle and screw on a bent bolt or just melt your original bolt into a downturned, but there are two problems:

Option A is not of glorious.

Option B still does not clear scope.

EDIT TO ADD: I'm also giving all my spare parts to the president of my old shooting team since she's been hankering for a Mosin. It might be cheaper for her to just buy a receiver/magazine. Everything else, save for the barrel, is a drop-in part.

Metal Storm?

Current thoughts on Metal Storm rifle:

- 45gr M855A1 style (with lead instead of copper), 5mm projectile. 1000 m/s MV.
- 12.5mm diameter cartridge, roughly 85mm long, weighs maybe as much as an 8mm-06 cartridge
- bullpup, very short (~730mm w/508mm barrel)
- long stroke piston, integral suppressor, carbon fibre wrapped barrel, etc.
- powered/data rails that allow the rifle to be turned into an OICW with the addition of a 25mm MS UGL and XM25 style optic.

Anyone have any other thoughts on what I should or shouldn't add?

From an aesthetics point of view, it all flows pretty well. The ammunition on the buttstock is pretty 'wut' but could be for specialized ammunition.
