This.

A real AK needs this area for the charging handle/bolt group to cycle without having to check for a round in the chamber. This means that for the system to fully cycle, it needs that space where the fire selector is covering up the area when it's on safe.

FBI also call AK type 1-3 AK47. Or was that the CIA?

Normally, said +P FMJ / +P FMJ AP would only be used when the assailants are known to be armored.

EDIT: Also, instead of removing lead from ammo entirely for the sake of the environment, why not give TMJ ( total metal jacket ) ammo a try? It's basically a bullet with an integral copper ( or whatever ) jacket ( base included ).

A dust cover for that area should be there unless you want to return to the old AK fire selector. You can add a Galil safety that includes both the AK selector and a thumb-operated selector that moves the AK selector as well.

Edit: Given images of the AK-12, it could be possible to do what you did before but that would involve something completely different.

I don't think a dust cover is necessary tbh.

solved the dust cover problem AK-12 style, with an elongated ejection port and the charging handle basically sitting halfway through the handguard.

It would look better if it was steel or something, with wood furniture, instead of that silly polymer everyone seems to like these days, though.

Those are relatively niche weapons; in the context of 'service' assault rifles (which these are) there seems to have been an aversion to fancy bullpup or hi-speed low drag polymer weapons.

tbf I'm fucking lazy and will just adopt a version in 5.45x45mm as 'official' service rifle

The receiver cover tab is the small thing that sticks out of the back off the upper receiver. Press it and the top comes off. You should really learn about all the important parts of a weapon before making a copy of it.

Does full-auto or burst-fire capability by itself negatively impact accuracy? ( in the general sense, e.g. as in: in SA mode a gun that can only shoot in SA will be more accurate than a gun also firing in SA but that can also fire in FA )?

If you don't train your men properly in terms of firing full-auto, then you're going to see them spray under fire and that wastes bullets. The US put burst on its M16A2s to conserve ammo but it seems they're going back to full-auto capable weapons with the M4A1 as general issue in the Army. They still have to train their servicemen how to shoot full-auto no matter what.

Marines standard-issue M16A4s but officers and other special roles get the M4 too. Point applies.

What, in terms of altering the bullet's flight path or just in terms of recoil?

If you mean the first option, then I have no idea. I doubt it though.
