It was a joke. Although I really do have tank bayonets. But that's a different story.

My point was that a designation does not need to convey information or make sense. After all what does M4 mean? M4 rifle? M4 tank?
The thing that is important is that what ever system is used to make the designations is internally consistent enough that the guy issuing supplies knows what he is dealing with. So Rifle Felix 0.75x600 Automatic is as good a designation as M14.

This unusual evolutionary adaptation serves no purpose, and makes the tank look quite silly to some.
Here we see two male tanks fighting over a female APC.
Notice the two are shooting some 500 meters apart, and not stabbing one another.

Here the tanks bayonet falls off, due to the recoil of the gun.
This confuses the tank.
Here a purpelian tank attempts to ram an enemy APC with its Bayonet.
This kills the tank.

Actually the bayonet is welded into the barrel structure and pretty much a solid part of the barrel behind the muzzle break. That thing ain't falling off any time soon.

And I take it you have not heard the story behind the thing have you?

Well, some kinda muzzle-loader that doesn't involve a percussion-primer or a wheel-lock, or a matchlock. So, well, psuedo-miquelet it is!

I think i more or elss have an angle on the differences between a true flintlock and miquelet lock is: its how the sears are mounted and act on the cock/hammer i.e. the horizontal sears protrude through the lcokplate and act directly on the hammer. An exposed main srping and a big screw ring for the upper jaw on the hammer are also typical miquelet features.

The miquelent locks were also a very southern european mediterrain thing with nothern europe going more for doglocks and then true flintlocks. with just about everybopdy in europe using true flitnlcoks for thier miltiary arms by the early 1700s (largely due to french influence).

of course i'm sure you could come up with a reason to use a miquelet lock and they should be more interestign to draw and more of the action is exposed rather than hiding behind the lock plate.

Notice how the US government does't just use numbers.
It isn't M4, it's M4 Carbine (which also tells you it's the forth carbine, after the M1, M2, and M3 Carbines). Same thing with the M14, it's "M14 Rifle".

Not going to lie, but I'm considering adding bayonets to tank barrels.

For those that still don't know. It's ceremonial.
t all started back in the 1920's and 30's. From the time first rifled canons were introduced into the Purpelian army, way before they were tanks the weapons were refereed simply as Rifles. As times went on the term stuck and by WW2 it had become common practice to refer to the long barreled high velocity weapons as rifles and the short barreled low velocity HE throwers as canon. During the era (and indeed today), the Purpelian army was really, really up tight about their bayonet drill. A soldier it was said was not to step into battle without his bayonet. Even snipers and machine gun teams, and yes tank crews got them. So at some point during the inter war period it became common practice for tank crews to customize their vehicles in the same jest that fighter pilots would paint stuff on their airplane by tying or welding their issued bayonets to the barrels of their gun. Maybe it was mockery and maybe it was rule of cool. And maybe it also probably had something to do with the tank forces being almost all female as well. And at least one tank ace was known to have "My rifle" painted on the gun of her tank. Either way, the practice became so widespread that by 41 factories were producing tank guns with a standard officers sword bayonet welded firmly behind the muzzle break as a form of decoration but not to impede functionality of the gun. And tradition took it from there. In the modern day, the blades are simply bare bones steel replicas of actual sword bayonets.

So all in all it is probably the worlds first example of a spontaneous meme getting institutionally accepted as tradition.

To distinguish between the shorthand designations, the official designation provides more information. The M14 is "United States Rifle, 7.62 mm, M14". It conveys that it is a military rifle, chambered for 7.62mm, and the "M14" designation distinguishes it from other 7.62mm rifles the United States may use. A barrel designation doesn't seem as helpful as simply listing the caliber.

Rifle - rifled firearm or artillery piece
Felix - developed by DB Felix (a DB that only does small arms BTW narrowing it down)
0.75 - caliber, 0.75cm = 7.5mm
600 - barrel length 600mm
Automatic - self explanatory

It's Purpelia. Black and white are not exclusive to one another. In fact, they tend to happen at the same time all the time. Did you know that a single piece of kit can have many designations in my army? Here are just some of them:
- DB designation
- Official DB product designation
- Factory designation
- Overall armed forces designation
- HMAD code
- Individual designations at the army level (ground forces, airforce, river navy etc. all have their own designations for the same kit).
- Officially adopted nicknames on all levels

You should use nm for everything.

"Yes, marvel at our new one billion nanometer gun. We named it after its caliber - it's formally called the M1000000000."

Basically able to be hip-fired, or used as an emplacement like an M2 Browning, but heavier focus on high-rate of fire for anti-personnel.

Pistol rounds allow for the entire thing to be a reasonable weight. Smaller barrels, smaller everything, but they kill the range to, at my best guess, 75 yards.
5.56 NATO seems to be the best. Allows for a moderately smaller size, increases the weight for a trade of rather increased range and accuracy.

5.45x39 is better than 5.56 NATO, especially when size / weight is a concern.

There is absolutely no use for a pistol cartridge to be used as a main service weapon in any situation for a modern army, with the possible exception of pistols themselves.

Anyway if you're open to suggestions use the .357 Remington Maximum, because 9x40 superpressure that's why.

I will cut you, bitch. The 5.45x39mm, while a few grains lighter, actually takes up more volume than the 5.56 NATO. We have had this discussion already.
