Random question time. How would a newer used (was put into storage immediately after production and only now unpacked) BT-5 fare as a motorcar for civilians in the 1950's? The idea being that the army wanted to get rid of them all and just dumped them for a token price on the civilian market as motor cars after disarming them.

Historically tank engines have 250 operating hours of life before depot overhauls. German WWII heavy (Panther and Tiger) tank engines had something like 100 or less operating hours of life before field overhauls.

Tank engines are bad car engines. Tank engines are bad tractor engines to boot, although if you derate the tank engine by half, you might get much more operating mileage out of it. It would also help if you cut out a bit of the armor plating.

Can I actually do that without actually building a new one from scratch? And I imagine that even if I could cutting it apart so much would probably make the whole thing more expensive than scraping it for steel.

Not really. The Germans converted a few of their tanks to tank destroyers. Just weld away everything but the chassis.

It actually says the power pack is 1099 mm x 414 mm x 440 mm = 200 liters
