In which case why not just use a helicopter gunship? You're not going to gain any advantage with this vehicle. It won't be able to hide as well as a tank due to the fact that it's flying, and it won't have the speed of a helicopter due to the weight of the armour. Not to mention, it'll burn through fuel at a ludicrous rate trying to constantly stay in the air. The rotor blades will also be extremely vulnerable to attack. If your idea is to build a helicopter with firepower and protection of a tank, you'll be better off just building a tank. If your idea is a tank with the speed and manuverability of a helicopter, just build a helicopter.

Better to just pick one and stick with it.

Well, 120mm guns work pretty fine on vehicles as lightweight as fifteen or so tons, with appropriate recoil measures taken (more 'standard' guns being feasible on anything upwards of 30-40t, it seems).
Assuming a 120ETC is being comparable to conventional 140, you could be looking at 50t with substantial recoil measures. Gun recoil length, brakes, turret strengthening etc.

Aye, IC, the new vehicle is replacing a late-Cold War era T-84 expy. The idea was that we could skimp on the armour, but at least give the new vehicle enough firepower to reliably take on most vehicles, excepting :NS: supertanks. And yeah, my main concern was whether or not it'd be feasible to mount that weapon on a 50t platform. If I can, that's good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the US planning on putting a 120 mm ETC XM291 "lightweight" cannon in a 18-tonne FCS MCS? What exactly would make an ETC cannon lightweight in that respect?

20 tonnes or so is the smallest vehicle that ETC guns have been mounted. XM291, XM360, and a modified M256 were mounted on one of the M8 demonstrators for FCS.

Assuming that you can generate a steady supply of a good deal of kilowatts to send to the gun (preferably without stopping, and certainly without using significant engine power), possibly.
The peak power figure may not be the best indicator of this ability.

1. FCS is dead.
2. The FCS 120mm cannon was the XM360. XM291 was the 120/140mm cannon planned for a possible M1 upgrade that never materialized.
3. XM360 was not ETC.
4. ETC is basically dead IRL. ETC R&D no longer shows up in US Army budget documents, and even journal articles on the subject have basically dried up in the past few years.
