MBTs/heavies are named after heros of classical and ancient literature (gilgamesh, agamennon, hector etc) derivatives of these designs are a bit of a mixed bunch but enginneering vehciles get named after classical stratagists/tricky heros i.e. the hectors AVRE version would be the Odysseus (causing no end of hilarity betwwen the Armoured and Royal engineerign Corps).

Previously medium tanks were named after snakes with light tanks also now gettign snake names although technically the koshi and adder are named after two of my favourite clan battlemechs, the IC explanation for the koshi is that we have a type of sea snake by that name somewhere on covenetant isalnd/the protectorate. Becasue sea snakes in and around canary island/off the coast of senagal ish types places totally make sense ;)

I just use appropriate sounding words, EG: Hunter, Warrior, Vanguard, etc... translated into either Norwegian or Swedish normally.

For the full designation i use this:
[vehicles 'role'].[vehicle type]([sub type]):[designation number]. [Name]
EG: CV.T(U): 28. Krigaren

CV = Combat Vehicle
T = Tank
(U) = universal, aka MBT (this died out as the concept of light/medium/heavy tanks stopped applying)
28 = random number vehicle designation number
Krigaren = Name

The military branch of the Qeshm Independence Movement has a number of civilian pickup trucks and vans which it uses to move personnel back and forth across the island. Some of these pickup trucks have been haphazardly armed with weapons such as the M40 recoilless rifle and the DShK heavy machine gun so they can act as light fire support platforms.

Largely whatever sounds cool. I've gone from the likes of "Timberwolf" to largely nowadays things to do with Native Americans, which is where things like Li Toneur comes from (Think the translation is "Lightning" for that one).

No autocannons?

They do no sitt as you would sit on a chair but more as if you were sitting on the floor on a "pillow." By floor I mean "spinning disc of 125mm ammunition." Don't worry though, the carousel is actually protected from splinters; there's no penetration of the vehicle that would detonate the ammunition that wouldn't fry you anyway. The carousel roof does not rotate but you are still technically sitting on it; I imagine you can feel the vibration.
HEAT can penetrate, but it does a limited amount of damage outside it's beam.

Won't it be a bit hard to see?
The tank has no sensors or anything, so sight out of the windows is pretty imperative (and it's already limited).
They will be very thick (hopefully proof to small arms) though.

I normally do animal names in Afrikaans (Bontebok, Rooibok, Boerboel, Boerbok, Bergkat etc). It's really easy to mix and match in that language. Occasionally however I will name a vehicle after its designer - individual or company.

My SPH has the name of "Taandee Wiikiyen" which translates into "How Far?"
"Medium Tank" is Li Toneur, which is "Thunder", not lightning like i thought
My Heavy Tank/Assault Tank is Aenfizzi, which i cant locate atm in my list of translations
IFV is Li Tenan, which is Lieutenant

EDIT: Aenfizzi is "gun"

Which Native American language(s) is this all from? It sounds rather nice.

I name my tanks after practically anything, but the current HT9 family is being named after successive breeds of wyverns (so, fictional creatures in a fictional language, essentially)

Found this on the internet, thought it was nice.

Lamonian military equipment is typically named with Latin words that I feel describe somethign about what i'm feeling about the project itself. Except for the Valkyrie tank series, of course. THAT was named that way because I thought that the name was cool back when I designed the first one.

Also, some tank pr0n:

Michif. Lamoni found a word doc a while back with a bunch of phrases and word translations. All of 280 people know the language today, and as far as everyone knows there have never been more than 3,000 speakers at a given time.

Kingdom of Sierra Armed Forces Military Ground Vehicles

Postby Kingdom of Sierra » Fri Dec 27, 2013 10:46 pm

Kingdom of Sierra
Ministry of Defense
The Royal Military adopted the M1 Abram to replace the M60 tank. It has served over the decades alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service along with the M1 Abram. The M1 remains the principal main battle tank of the Royal Army and Royal Marines.
Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks, have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. As of 2009, the Ministry of Defense planned to acquire the M1A3 which is currently under development in the United States.
