Naming conventions of your nation

Postby Cill Airne » Tue Jun 11, 2013 11:23 am

What are the naming conventions (traditions) of your nation? What is the order of names? And what is an example of a typical name following this convention?

In the Magocracy the naming convention is difficult and unlike most human naming traditions. The first name given is called Essë, the father name. This name is given to the child by the father. At the age of 8 a second name is given to the child called Amilessë, the mother name. This name is given to the child by the mother and is descriptive of either the characteristics of the child or a hoped fate for the child. The third name given is called the Cilmessë which is actually chosen by the child himself at 16. This is the name people go by amongst close friends and family and is never used in official records and it is considered rude to call someone by their climessë if they are not a close friend. Because they are not used in official documents they function in a similar manner to a nickname. The final given name, Epessë, is the after-name. It is the name given to someone after they have achieved something great, or after death in honour of them. The surname, Tellessë, is passed on by the father.

The current King of the Magocracy:
Essë: Baenlin
Amilessë: Manyondo (good son)
Epessë: Túcsere (bringer of peace)
Tellessë: Súrion

The lower and middle class may only have two names, first and last, unless one of them earns the right to add a third name, for example by becoming a war hero or making a significant scientific discovery or similar great things. The second name is the one passed on to the offspring. Taking on a spouse's name after marriage is possible but not required; it is up to the parents to decide which last name the child will have if they don't.
Lower nobility have two names as well, plus a family title starting with dan (example: dan Lelin). The family title is passed onto the child, whereas the other two names aren't. Lower nobility may earn a third name the same way the lower and middle class does.
Higher nobility have a family title starting with din (example: din Sakarnis) and they may immediately give their children three names, none of which are passed on. The higher nobility cannot earn a fourth name, but the priviledge to give children three names can be revoked by the Emperor or Empress; in that case the family members would be stripped of their third name as well. When two nobleswith different family titles marry, neither of them takes on another name, but the two families generally negotiate which title the children will have and thus which family they will belong to.
By default, if you adress someone you do not know well, you use all names including the family title if there is one; once you get to know someone a little you may use the first two names, but higher nobility is still to be adressed with their family title unless you are higehr nobility as well. Using only the first name is reserved for very intimate relationships and requires actual permission from the other lest you insult them greatly. That permission is usually only given between lovers or parent and child.

Waspeaterians generally have at the very least a forename and a surname - the surname is the family name and the forename is chosen by the parents. Middle names are also common, and they are usually chosen by the parents, although it is not uncommon for Waspeaterian Catholics to keep their Confirmation names as middle names. And unofficially, people often acquire nicknames as they go through life.

Most Alyskan's follow Russian naming conventions. Each person has one or more given names (although giving a child who is not of noble birth more than one given hame is very rare and considered extreemly pretentious), a patronymic name (which is based on one's father's given name) and a surname. If your father's name is Ivan, your patronymic name would be Ivanevich (if you are male) or Ivanovna (if you are female). Surnames have both masculine and feminine forms. For example, the surname of the Tsarista is Romanova, which is the feminine form of Romanov, which is the name of the royal house. Most Alyskans also have a diminuative form of their given name by which they are generally referred to by their family and friends in informal situations. A few Alyskans who belong to minority ethic groups follow other naming conventions, though legally everyone is required to have a surname and at least one given name.

A typical Alyskan might be named Nikolai Mikhailevich Ivonov. From his patronymic name we can tell that his father's name is Mikhail. When referring to him by his proper name, especially in formal situations, the given name and patronymic name is normally used together (Nikolai Mikhailevich) whether or not the surname is also used. However, the patronymic name is seldem used along with a diminutive form of the first name.

The First name of a Nebelonian is his Mikhtra, his Given Name, then follows his Nokhtra, his Ceremonial Name, then his Makhtria, his Maternal Name, his Mother's Maiden Name, then his Pakhrtokh, his Father's Surname.

For Example, Emperor Khaltin IV's Name:

Mikhtra: Na'aru
Nokhtra: Akhraz
Makhtria: Steradarassian (Skhatrokhtaraskh)
Pakhrtokh: Malkovar

However, Emperors have a fifth name, their Kikhtra, their Reign Name, used after they are coronated. Emperors generally choose the name of a previous emperor, and rarely use their own name. Emperor Khaltin IV was born Na'aru Akhraz Skhatrokhtaraskh Malkovar, but he took the name Khaltin IV upon accession to the throne.

In Blewog commoners typically have three names, called Ärstnem, Zœkanem, and Thærnem. The Ärstnem is given by the parents at their birth, and the Zœkanem is inherited or given by the father, and the Thærnem is an epithet given by the parents.

Example of a commoner name:

Ärstnem: Ægbart
Zœkanem: Frayton
Thærnem: Ælfreled (Blewogi for Elf Lead)

Final Product: Ægbart Frayton the Ælfreled

However, the naming process for nobility, especially the king, is much more complex.

Here is an example, our king's name:

First name (Named for a Desired Trait): Æthelred (Blewogi for Wise Council
Zœknem: Œlgar
Mother's maiden name: Egrithfil
Grandmother's Maiden name: Ecwigwin
Fathers name: Edmund
Mothers name: Ædawallo
Dynastic name: Seton

TurtleShroom humans are ordered to receive three names at borth: forename, middle name, and surname. The surname is required to be the same as the father, but the forename can by literally anything they agree on, as can the middle name.

When a female human weds a male, the law requires her to drop her maiden name for the husband's surname. She is given the option to replace her middle name with her maiden name or delete her maiden name altogether. A husband changing his surname to his wife's is considered an attempt to defraud insurance, benefits, taxation, etc. .

Turtle naming is much harsher because male turtles are considered petty breeding stock in the home and in social life. A turtle hatchling is assigned a name by the mother. The father has no right to decide on a name. When a male turtle marries a female (monogamy is enforced amongst naturally polygamorous turtles), the male surrenders his last name and is not allowed to keep his "squire" name (as opposed to "maiden"). The hatchling is the mother's, not the family's or the father's. Turtles can opt to have a middle name, but the way turtles work, this is seen as unneccesary.

Mushrooms germenate asexually and therefore have no "parent" in the usual sense. They are assigned a number and are then named after the location that owns the property they germenated on (e.g. Home Depot #00033). Once a mushroom has fully grown and develops cognitive thought, he (mushrooms have no gender, so they are all "he") may select a first and last name of his choosing.

If a creature's name can not be determined or the parents can't decide, the state names the offspring. (This happens if the offspring can not be named within three days following the first night the offspring was spawned.)

Most people have three names: their preme'e (given name), their pafme'e (paternal surname), and their mamyme'e (maternal surname).

The preme'e is selected by both parents at birth, as in many cultures.

The pafme'e and mamyme'e are received from the child's father and mother, respectively. The child's father would have gotten their name from their father, while the child's mother would have gotten their name from their mother; thus the pafme'e follows a patrilineal line similar to Western culture, while the mamyme'e follows a matrilineal line in the same way. In the case of same-sex couples, one parent is arbitrarily selected as the "father" and the other as the "mother". In the rare case of a single parent, the child directly inherits their parent's pafme'e and mamyme'e.

Immigrants to the Lojbo Empire are told to choose a name of this form upon their arrival. In immigrants with surnames, it is common to use their native surname as their pafme'e and their mother's maiden name as their mamyme'e. In immigrants without surnames, it is common to use their father's and mother's given names, respectively.

In general, people are referred to by their preme'e, with surnames primarily used when the former would cause confusion.

There are legal restrictions on what a parent can name their child to prevent children from having names like "Kalcin" (feces) or "Satan". An adult may, if they wish, change their name to either of these things. However, all names must be pronounceable and valid in the Lojban language, resulting in changes like "Djon" for "John" or "Mu'amad" for "Muḥammad". Most names are either Lojbanizations like that or simple words suffixed with "n".

Each person gets one "free" preme'e change, with no fee and no questions asked. Each subsequent name change charges a fee equivalent to about 50USD. Pafme'e and mamyme'e cannot be changed without explanation; this is often done due to a bad relationship with one or both parents. Women are allowed to change their paternal surname (and, less commonly, men their maternal surname) due to marriage; however, this is not considered enough explanation to change the woman's maternal (or man's paternal) surname, since these are the names they will pass on to their children.

Breheimian naming conventions vary by area. The North and the East still tend to use patronymics instead of family names, while the souther and the west tend to have more typical family names. A northerner takes either the first name of his father or mother (depending on gender, men taking the names of their fathers and women the names of their mothers) and adds -sen or -dottir to the end of it. Middle names are rare, but do occur particularly within wealthy families.

To confuse matters, quite a few family names in the country descend from patronymics, so someone named Fredriksen might either be a part of the Fredriksen family, or simply have a father named Fredrik. Meanwhile, the Runit minority tend to have between three and eleven names depending on their age, as a Runit adds new names depending on their deeds and positions. However, for administrative purposes only the first, family and tribal names are kept on record.

Whilst it varies radically between people, almost all Afalians have a forename, always referred to as a Christian name, a middle name and surname. Rarely people miss out a middle name.

Traditionally the Christian name will be a Biblical one, often a saint's name will be used. The middle name is usually that of the mother or father, depending on whether the child is a boy or girl-although sometimes boys will take the male version of their mother's name and vice versa.

The surname is of course that of the parents. For example the prime minister's full name is Christopher Michael Kelly. His father was Michael Kelly.

The only time this differs is with Royalty, but that is a select five or six people.

The naming of people in the Principality of Romberg is varied. The most common naming convention uses a Slavic (Mainly Russian) surname and a Nordic (Germanic) given name. This naming convention can be found throughout the country. In some cases, the naming order can be reversed, with a Nordic surname and a Slavic given name. These names are mainly found in the Northern part of the country. Finally, pure Nordic or pure Slavic names can be found among the minority groups, although in general they are rare occurrences. Middle names are used, although rarely.

Nobles and Royalty simply add the house that they are granted nobility to to the end of the name. e.g. Von Sturmhåll, Von Ravenholm, Von Königsberg.

the naming convention in cameroi is to avoid resemblance of any name to any other name or other thing, as much as possible. (except for the naming of locations, where humorous references are allowed, but the names of politicians, living or dead, are not)

names are randomly generated from pronounceable syllables, by the use of roll playing dice, in a ritual setting. by parents before a child is born. and again by each person for themselves, upon reaching the age of puberty.

some cameroi rename themselves a second time again when they become old, but this is not common.

also personal names do not carry lineage, but when more then one name is required use locatives instead. for example thesu of hambone or shenji of nebethira.

personal names generally tend to be only two syllables. locatives other then humorous reference ones, generally have four. mechanical objects may have three, five. or more then five.

only sacred things may have only a single one.

As a significant number of the Protectorate's citizens are descendents of refugees (or refugees themselves), the Protectorate is a racial melting-pot. Citizens retain their full names upon assumption of citizenship. The majority of citizens, however, are of Western European stock.

The elite Templar social class follows a different convention. Upon being knighted, a citizen assumes a Latin (as in Roman, not Latin American) name. He or she retains his or her old name (chiefly for family and personal affairs), but for all administrative and official business the Latin name is used.

In the Soodean Imperium, people have three names. The Surname is taken from the parents' surname, to allow continuity across a family line. It is possible for a surname to be taken from the mother's side instead of the father's, but this is only widespread in the provinces of Argentsant and Aquilon. In cases of adoption or artificial birth, a child may use their foster parents' surname, or have a surname given to them by the State. Surnames typically have a symbolic meaning central to the family history, such as the name of an important ancestor, place, or event.

At birth, a person is given a short, simple Child Name, which serves as their first name in childhood. When a citizen turns 15, however, they may choose an Individual Name to replace the Child Name. Individual Names are often highly symbolic, with a meaning (usually in a regional or archaic language) that represents that person's individual personality.

So if a person is born to parents with the surname Gladia, given the first name Rin, and later chooses to be called Csillagász (Stargazer) because of his lifelong fascination with astronomy, his full name will be Rin Csillagász Gladia. In everyday life he will be known as Csillagász, but his relatives and close friends may still call him Rin.

It is also possible for a citizen to choose an Honor Name, which will become their descendants' surname. This privilege is only extended to very distinguished individuals. For example, our founding Emperor chose the Individual Name Su (肅) and the Honor Name Dou (閗), which together form Su Dou, or "Reverently Struggling." This symbolizes his determination to build a powerful and virtuous nation.

Each day of the Shengxiao calender an element (Unless they are born on one of the five Elemental Days), and the animal name comes from the style their father is training (though if a child is born on one of the twelve Animal Days, they will take that name). The child is named after the Spirit whom the parents wish to protect it through this life.

Ponies do not have family names; a pony's name is believed to be indicative of her unique personality. Quite often it's related to the talent or Destiny indicated by her cutie mark, one of the mysteries of pony philosophy.

That said, it's not uncommon for ponies within a family to have similar talents, and thus similar or related names. Similar sounding names don't imply "family names" per se, although an extended pony family may pick an informal name for themselves.

A person of the kingdom usually has three names: two given names and a surname. Traditionally, the first name is one of English origin while the second a name of Spanish origin.

ex) Michael Tomas de Aramade Cortes
also known as His Majesty King Michael I

ex) Marisa Mercedes de Alcantara
the Prime Minister, a unique case of having two Spanish-based names

ex) Cecilia Renée Camposanto
Riverian actress and television personality, known professionally as Serene. Her French secondary name reflects her half-Haitian heritage

This has its basis with the longtime relationship between our country and the United States, with many Americans settling in our country and taking their names with them, and started as a goodwill token by our third king, Emmanuel III, who named his son William Ricardo after his friend then-Minister to Colombia William Henry Harrison. It has stuck with us since, even being codified in our laws from 1851 to 1940. A person is usually known professionally by both names, but in private by their second name.

Today, the two names are usually from different languages, but they do not necessarily have to be English and Spanish.

South Minorqans have 3 names normally, but gradually, with rapid Westernisation, some may choose to have 5 names.

For example, using the unique example of the Global Ambassador's name:

Given at birth:
[surname of father]: Yip-Wong (叶王)
[Chinese name]: Sau Kum (秀琴)
[classical name]: Yan Wah (欣华)

After birth:
[English name]: Frances
[English middle name]: Maria
[Husband's surname (for females who marry)]: Tze (谢)

Official Name: Frances Maria Yip-Wong Tze Sau Kum (叶王-谢秀琴)

Classical names are used in the terms of official usage or writings, as it is easier to reference the GA as Yan Wah instead of her official name.

Slafstopians have up to 6 names. Occupational name, skill name, first name, middle name, maternal name, and surname. To explain, let's look at somebody called Richiev.

Richiev was named Richiev by his parents, so first name is Richiev. They also chose a middle name, Joakim, which is of significance to the family - Joakim was Richiev's great-grandfather and a friend of one of the nation's founders. Richiev Joakim's mother was called Tanya Mir before she got married to Richiev Joakim's father, so Richiev Joakim is now Richiev Joakim Mirov (if Richiev was female, it would be Mirovna). Richiev Joakim Mirov's father is Gordon Vilal, so Richiev is Richiev Joakim Mirov Vilal. He is a skilled craftsman and is a carpenter, so he has the occupational name Teslyar and the skill name Remisnyk.

So that's Teslyar Remisnyk Richiev Joakim Mirov Vilal. But everyone calls him Richiev.
