Okay, that's how i'm issuing rifle-ammo packages of 12.7x108mm and 15.2x122mm. Machine gun versions will come in 250rd (12.7) and 150rd (15.2) belts.

Really unless you go with soemthing exotic like caseless or polymer cased telescoped ammo there really isn't anything that would notably better. You could perhaps keep the piston system and move over to a rotary locked bolt mechnaism for "moar polymer" on the receiver but really conventional firearms design is pretty much at it zenith and pretty much has been since the 40s. The last step in the evolution will be to go fully digital and netwroekd with your acesories and start messing with smart triggers and scopes.

In fairness, I think spam cans have always been a rather Russian thing, whereas the Americans have preferred the 'cartridge box' like above.
Really huge cartridges, ie for machine guns, are probably shipped pre-belted and in their ammunition boxes to straight affix to the weapon. 7.62 Tsarist specified for the PK is apparently shipped in PK munition boxes, pre-belted.

Why not develop your own rifle model? Your BR system made a whole-Hel of alot of sense, great material, just sitting there, ripe for the modification/upgrading.

For starters, a non-bullpup rifle of equal barrel length would have more potential under-barrel rail estate.

There probabaly exists some sort of experiemental model deep in the pattern rooms but really why would you convert an AR-18 mechanism to a bullpup layout only to convert it back? why not just stick a new barrel on the AR-18?

The entire point of the L64 was its cartridge. A bullpup AR-18 is just an SA80/L85/L86.

Well unless ICly the latest version is still based on old receivers that are long out of production, have worn out and have had the sapres stock run down thus you need soemthing "comercial off the shelf" right now i.e. where the British Army are going to be in a few years.

So scrap the electric motor entirely then? I was originally thinking some sort of pneumatic system but thought that would be equally bulky and less reliable. So best just to stick with the old PIAT system, just with a charging handle for an easier reload if the spigot fails to lock back in place.

Large diameter (12.7x108 and 14.5x114) rounds do not come in the traditional cans. (14.5x114 mostly)
They typically come in very large wooden boxes in a re-Sealable can ready for feeding. In WWII loose rounds came in cans, and there were...I wanna say 110 per. The 12.7x108 come in both.
