Typical minimum ages are as follows.

  • Get a driver's license: 18 in all provinces and federally. Provinces range from ages 15-17 in terms of legal permission to drive under parental supervision.
  • Vote in elections: 18 at all levels of government.
  • Get married: 16 in a few provinces, 18 in most. The federal government recognises any marriage allowed within a province on a federal level.
  • Join the military: 18.
  • Age of consent: 16 in most provinces, and 18 in a few.
  • Buy/drink alcohol: No minimum age if supervised by parents, and 18 for purchase in all provinces and federally.
  • Buy/use marijuana: Illegal in most provinces unless medically prescribed (this is recognised federally and in most provinces). One province permits purchase and use at age 18.
  • Buy/use any other drugs: 18 for tobacco purchase and use.
  • Be legally recognized as an adult under your nation's laws: 18.
  • Become leader of your country: Persons running for President must be at least 30, while anyone who is entitled to vote is able to run for a seat in the National Assembly. As such, it is theoretically possible for an 18-year-old to become Prime Minister, although in practice this is almost certainly never going to happen.
