Views on recycling in your nation

Postby Sungai Pusat » Sat May 04, 2013 2:27 am

What is your nation's view on recycling?

Due to the sheer number of people on the planet, as well as a slowdown of technological advances in mining as thanks to the actions of the previous government a century or two back, most Pusatians have to recycle in order to prevent the entire economy from collapsing due to the lack of resources. As such, virtually everyone in the Anarchist Planet (approximately 98%, in fact) recycle and about 87% of all trash is recycled. As such, massive strides have been made in that field of study and almost all of the materials within any piece of trash found within the planet can be seperated, sorted and reused for any other use.

However, after PT150 (Or approximately AD 2261), strides have also been made in R&D of more refined methods of mining resources so as to not make a total mess out of everything. Whilst most mining does take place on The Anarchist Planet in itself, some mining happens in Locksfoundland and on the orbiting moon of Pusatia, where the 'official' Anarchist Planet resides. Because of this, the rate of recycling has begun a steady decline, possibly to around 88.5% of people recycling 78.3% of the total trash in The Anarchist Planet after the economic shift has taken place, along with research on even more refined recycling methods slowing to a trickle as compared to a century ago.

As such, most people have a positive view towards recycling as it is a system running for nearly two centuries now and it is quite economically positive for us with the level of technology we have now, as well as it being environmentally friendly. And the Pusatians love to feel like they're preserving the planet's ecological system.

It's not something most people have much of an opinion on, because it's just considered the default state of affairs that everything is recycled. The resources used to make something can always, at the very least, be used to make more of that same thing, excluding thing which become destroyed after use (such as bullet casings or matches). However, actually selling something like this is fairly difficult, since the responsibility for disposing of the remains would fall to the buyer, and littering (including failing to recycle something) is a serious crime.

This means that everything you can buy here is either designed to become so thoroughly destroyed as to pose no environmental threat (such as what are now standard biofuels) or be conveniently recyclable.

The reasoning for this actually isn't that we have a shortage of resources, because we don't and haven't for a long time. Instead, it's because disposing of the waste that wouldn't be recycled would involve processes widely considered abhorrent or impractical. Merely stashing it somewhere, such as in a landfill, falls under the abhorrent category, as our species is environmentally conscious to the point of paranoia. Jettisoning it into space / a star would be more expensive than recycling it for no real benefit, therefore impractical. And incinerating it without recycling it is both, when taking into consideration both the unpleasant fumes and the minimal effort required to simply melt down and reuse the raw materials.

We agree strongly in recycling. It is common for eco-wastebaskets to be placed on your doorstep for you to recycle. Every pound of cans you collect, you earn 10 Aquafireland Pennies. That's equivalent to 9 U.S. Dollars.

Recycling has been the default modus operandi of Prut society since the War of Siblings, which was almost four hundred years ago. Even after we ceased being starved of resources, our economy and everyday life still incorporates recycling. To us it's a normal, ordinary process.

Recylcling is seen as a useful tool for increasing the overall efficiency of one's resource consumption by allowing the same unit of material to be repurposed many times. Most areas of Radictistan has regular recycling pickup, excepting the blutstats where all municipal services ceased functioning a long time ago.

Recycling is not promoted by the Federation Government or most Republic governments. Its only promoted by the government in a few Republics where the Green Coalition is or has been part of the government.

Businesses will pay customers to bring in items for recycling when they deem it to be economically efficient. If recycling does not increase a company's profit margins, it doesn't make sense to do it. Its too much hassle for too little benefit.

Our citizens recycle with an almost religious devotion. Littering, or putting waste in an inappropriate receptacle is highly stigmatised. We also have a strong tinker and hobbyist subculture who will often repurpose broken objects or discarded materials.
On almost any matter I will discuss, I will negotiate, and I will compromise. But on the matters of liberty, justice, and knowledge I shall not be moved. Those who would impose or support tyranny, corruption, or ignorance are undeserving of consideration, nor understanding, nor even life itself.

We see it as an action as communist, and only 0.08% recycle. Who needs to, after all? If we run out of resources, we can always exploit them from trade with other nations to receive resources, or import them from our Associated Free States. In our Associated Free States though, Asenath sees 86% of its population recycle, and Luziycan Ataahua with 97%. Sakhalin has the least, at 0.02% of its population recycling, lower than the mainland.

Which is better? Poorer quality goods that are recycled, or high quality new goods which when done, you can just toss in the trash?

Recycled goods don't have to be inferior. Even if they were, it would be better than living in a garbage dump.

Recycling is mandatory in Feebland. Our people recycle 94% of their waste, either with free government-provided compost bins or with the government recycling program. After recycling, businesses in Feebland can buy recycled goods (ie plastic, aluminum) from the government for very low prices.
