Couple the propellant with the round like a traditional cartridge it should be rather quiet still and well it won't be any heavier than a normal mortar round.

Yes I know this is what you suggested, but the opening mechanism, that could open an airtight canister on a large enough surface for sudden air release would be very complex. Traditional mortar rounds also lacked casing,the powder was measured in small bags or similar method as controlling powder load was the best way to control range.This is the other issue with premeasured canisters.Any air that you didn't use when shooting close would be lost, due to the pressure in the canister being too low to increase pressure behind the projectile to sufficient levels. Casing-style canisters would equate mags from which you cannot recover leftover rounds after a tactical reload.

Yeah your right I was just trying to find a faster way to reload other than a bike pump. and precharged tanks would't work all that well it was just a suggestion. also there are breechloading mortars (they look a lot like conventional artillery) they are just rare. as for wasted Air it's air what do you have to lose one shot one tank a better system would be detachable discardable fiberglass tanks. This should work Fiberglass worked for the M72.

With a smaller shell like I posted (60mm), you could use compressed air. Like a bike bump.
Larger, I don't think anything would work without making it way fo big.

So you say a gas sealed, conventional explosive driven piston, would be comparably silent?
Because it sounds like a good solution, but it needs to be (few)man portable, and the charge needs to be variable. But,no on second thought your're absolutely right, there could be a chamber also sealed from where air form between the projectile and piston can be diverted solving variable velocity-and-thus-range issue. So only the portability issue remains, but I guess it could be made portable in a lets say 67mm caliber which is decent for a mortar.
Does this sound like a feasible solution?

The M96 is a 22nd century firearm created by Weapon Systems Technology, utilized by the late UN Security Council and then the United Nations Space Command. Well BFB* this was ok, since there was P90. And it is a known fact that 5.56 and short barrels are no friends.
