The map is open to all residents of The New Commonwealth Society and while an area may be reserved at any time the relevant minister will add you to the map only after one month of membership of the region.
If you wish you may draw the area you wish to claim and post a link however this is optional and a description will suffice.
Some active role-play nation will instigate population caps on their nation in order to more realistically portray its development however this is also optional.
Please try and abide by the following guidelines when making your map claim;
* Try to make your claim interesting. Very few nations are like Chile with long narrow topography hogging the coast or Australia where a nation is also a whole continent. Most larger islands are also divided. Try to introduce features like rivers, mountains etc which have historically marked national boundaries. Coasts are often premium territory and claims for large stretches may be rejected. Remember there is nothing wrong with landlocked nations as well!
* As a region we generally use nationstates in game populations however if you want to cap your population feel free to do do.
* A great tool for working out your GDP and other stats is NS Economy. Using these figures you can work out how much you are spending on what. A nation spending 20% of its budget on defense means other area will suffer, maybe its social welfare leading to class divides etc. NS Economy can help you work out your type of nation if you read a little into the figures and hopefully help you role play it.
* Speaking of military budgets as percentages of GDP, in real life its North Korea (33%),Saudi Arabia (18%), Ethiopa, Oman and Eritea round out the top 5 (around 12% each). With the exception of Saudi Arabia its pretty clear that a large & spend on the military does not a economically developed nation make. Also very few nations have more then around 2-3% of their populations enlisted at any one time except in the case of total war. A misconception on NS is the 5% rule. This was meant for total war, a more realistic figure is half this. Real figures can be found here but again its clear a large % in the military is generally not a good thing economically wise. Looking at the top few per capita wise we have the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), South Ossetia and Eritrea. None are exactly great economic powers.
The map thread is run by the Minister of Commonwealth Affairs who may reject, approve or request changes to any claim for any reason, all claims are open for discussion.
