Lieutenant or Leftenant?

Postby Olwe » Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:00 pm

Which one does your nation use, Lieutenant or Leftenant? It's usually the same rank no matter how you spell/pronounce it, but it'd still be interesting to see which countries use which one.

In Olwe, Lieutenant is the standard but foreigners who join our military after becoming citizens or serve in our Foreign Legion are allowed to use the alternate pronunciation if they find it more comfortable.

Neither, as the equivalent rank "Leutnant" is pronounced: [ˈlɔɪ̯tnant]

To our understanding, however, both pronunciations of the English word are spelled "Lieutenant." Are we mistaken?

In Mechwarrior 2, Jeremy Hawksworth's rank is specifically stated as "Leftenant General"... other than that I don't know, since I've never served in the military in RL and assume most of the books I've read have taken liberties to some extent.

Lieutenant to us is actually higher than a Leftenate. Leftenates are usually subordiants o Lieutenats in Equalium.

We don't use the rank. We have High Generals (always capitalized), a single rank of regular generals, and commanders. Only High Generals maintain their positions year after year; the others are only commissioned during battles or wars and return to regular status once the engagement is over.

How much power a non-high general or commander wields while holding the rank depends on how many troops are assigned to his command. There is no set amount. A battle that only needs 10 troops will have a commander - and a battle that needs 100,000 troops will also have a commander. The one chosen for the second scenario is assumed to have a high level of skill at directing a large horde, while the one with only 10 troops is presumed to be an expert at small unit tactics.

It's spelt 'lieutenant' but pronounced 'leftenant'. There's some archaic custom that goes along the lines of only those in the Royal Navy are 'leftenants' and the rest are actually 'lieutenants' but that fell out of usage in the 18th-19th centuries. (This is both an IC answer for how Regnum Albion pronounces the word, and interestingly (maybe) an OOC answer for how the British do it).

There is no actual rank of the sort in Dyste, so there is no need for choosing one. Generally, 'Lieutenant' is used when dealing with foreign nations which may use the rank.

We pronounce it basically as it is spelled. It is spelled "lieutenant," and we pronounce it as such.

The Kiravian military doesn't have a rank that sounds anything like that. It would be impossible to decline a noun ending in '-nt', because '-nt' is the suffix for the singular essive of nouns in the third declension.
