NIJ IIIA is rated to stop .44 Magnum. NIJ III stops 7.62mm NATO.

The .280 British supposedly penetrates much better than the 7.62.

A steel core .280 would probably go through Level III plates at urban fighting distances.

It can penetrate a steel combat helmet at a longer range than the 7.62 NATO can due to energy retention, but .308 Winchester can likely outperform even .280 at longer ranges due to the superiority of modern commercial loadings.

I'm running with this interchangeable magwell idea. Well, I copied (WIP) an AK-103 magazine and tried to quickly rush an 'ACR AK' magwell attachment (possibly even more WIP).
Second rifle from bottom, how's it going?

100 gr bullet out of a 14' barrel does about 2400 fps.
2600 fps out of a 16' barrel.

Except the 6.35x45mm NACO is based on the .25 Remington, not the .223 Remington .

Assuming no steel core? Yes.

Possibly, but don't forget that a GPMG is a longer-range, barrier-defeating, heavier-suppressing and harder-hitting tool than a light machine gun.

Right, and I've no intention to replace GPMGs with LMGs. It just seemed a decent solution for Deutsche Demokratischer Volksstaat since they wanted a belt-fed rifle that fired 5.45mm. The PU-1 seemed a superior choice over a downsized PK because in addition to retaining ammunition commonality, it also has (I believe) parts commonality and familiarity due to its being based on the AK-74. This
