It would be better if you could, flechettes as a mainline round are..iffy.

Apparently totally forgot about barrier penetration, existing flechettes are optimized to penetrate body armor but are very well lacking when it comes to penetrating other objects...

Dont forget about barrel wear.

Really, the cons outweigh the pros. You can get similar performance on penetration from AP ammunition. Training a soldier (well) on a rifle that shoots both takes longer and is more expensive.

Outfit soldiers with wet foliage.
Soldiers are now unstoppable against flechettes.

Still, SPIW started the grand US tradition of every new rifle project leading to the adoption of a new grenade launcher (see also OICW and the XM25, XM8 and the M320).

No, we still want you to develop a bayonet for it, why wouldn't you want that? Can you develop a bayonet for the M2 while you're at it please?' and then they were eventually forced to go and work on something sensible.

Good point. God knows its too heavy and big for use as a rifle or grenade launcher anyway. So why not put the weight and bulk to some use and make it into a club?
