The Sanian Foreign Legion

"The Sanian Foreign Legion represents the best of Sania, simultaneously championing Sanian pride, sovereignty, and magnanimity."

"The protectors of Sania are exemplars; they protect Sania not by slaying her enemies, but by being shining examples of loyalty, honor, teamwork, and the willingness to sacrifice for the well-being of others."

"That is what being in the Sanian Foreign Legion is about."

- An excerpt from acting Brigadier General, Cornelius "Ridgeway" Tillinger, on the establishment of the Sanian Foreign Legion.

Overview

The Sanian Foreign Legion (SFL) is a specialized mercenary branch of the Sanian Confederate Armed Forces (SCAF). The Foreign Legion consists of multiple independent mechanized infantry battalions whose members are non-Sanian citizens serving under a cadre of regular Confederate officers in each battalion. The majority of SFL battalions are based at Neighvarro, Aura; and Augustgrad, Oldoran. Each enlistee agrees to serve in uniform for a minimum of ten years, after which he/she and his/her immediate family become naturalized as Sanian citizens. While serving, each Legionary receives a salary of 12,000 Nuyen (the equivalent of roughly 20,400 NSD) and benefits similar to those received by the active-duty military.

Initial training consists of an intense, six-week English-language course for those unable to communicate effectively in English. Following that, the recruits attend a 12-week Armed Forces training program. The training focus is on basic mechanized infantry tactics and security operations. Every graduate is qualified as a rifleman, with specialized training conducted within the Foreign Legion’s divisions as required. The Sanian Foreign Legion has split responsibilities similar to that of the Confederate Coast Guard for peacetime and wartime conditions. During peacetime, the SFL falls under the control of the Special Research Progress Administration’s Department of Homeland Security with a primary mission of augmenting the Confederate Border Patrol in border security operations. Daily operations include conducting extensive patrols of the border, freeing the Border Patrol to concentrate its efforts on operating fixed border checkpoints.

When directed by the Prime Minister of the Sanian Confederacy, command of the SFL shifts to the Sanian Confederate Armed Forces. While trained and equipped to carry out high-intensity combat operations, the primary role of the SFL under the SCAF is to serve as a designated peacekeeping force. This allows regular Army units to concentrate on high-intensity conflict scenarios, and dramatically aids the overall readiness of the Confederate Armed Forces. Aside from the core mechanized infantry units, each SFL division includes an engineer construction battalion. While the SFL has no need for combat engineers, construction engineers are in constant demand, particularly in training deployments to Third World nations. The ability to build schools, roads and irrigation systems contributes significantly to the success of any peacekeeping operation.

What is the main religion of your people?
Is there something the regiments will be known for? (such as they die standing rather than retreat, they are good marksmen or something similar)

Please Note: *While there is no limit to the total amount of Foreigners from any single nation which can join the Legion, particularly large numbers of volunteers (I.E. those in excess of 10,000 individuals) may take longer to process or otherwise accept and integrate within standing operating forces. **The Confederacy maintains an open stance of equality in the acceptance of all volunteers regardless of former nationality, ethnicity, species, race, gender, or sexual orientation. So long as those who which to serve in the Legion come with honor and integrity, all are more than capable of being accepted as brothers in arms, fellow citizens, and certainly welcome here.

***And finally, yes. As non-Sanian citizens each Legionary is inherently considered less valuable then their contemporaries in the more conventional portions of the military. However, columns of resolute Confederate Legionaries are an intimidating sight, and the provision of heavy fire support and coordination with other Armed Forces units to cover their advances is vital – time and again, Confederate field commanders are reminded during and after training that the Confederacy's vast manpower reserves and that of it's Legion does not give them license to be satisfied with costly victories anymore than actual defeats.

"They say the Sisters work in mysterious ways. And it would seem their blessings to me finally arrived from the Legion's recruiting program in the form of a Battalion's worth of Legokilleran ponies and that of another made up of Sherwooderion darkyns. So, a bunch of Harmonists from across the sea and a subspecies of Vampires from who knows where are going to be the building blocks of the Foreign Legion... I can make this work. In fact the Legokillerans are showing promise already, with a particular knack for specializing in the types of conflicts outside conventional Confederate military doctrine. This tight-knit group of mares and stallions have already drawn the attention of their commanding officers, and with that respect for their knowledge, renown for their tenacity, and infamy for their enthusiasm. I have high hopes for this bunch in the coming months to say the least.

The Sherwooderions are a slightly different story, their Battalion's members possess a strain of Vampirism that I haven't managed to trace to any particular progenitor or source, they refer to themselves as Darkyns and carry an aversion to copper*. Nonetheless I've never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth and just received a request for support from the Confederate Border Patrol along the Sanian border to Noranda. The Border Regiments are the first line of defense against the horrors that seep out of that wasteland. Ravening undead beasts, strange aberrant monsters, men and women driven mad and twisted, and even their own fallen brethren – the Border Regiments are the bulwark against these and more. The Sherwooderions have since been detailed to the most troubled portions of the Badlands and, each time, have helped hold the line. Darkyn dismounted patrols also have a sterling if somewhat bloodthirsty reputation, particularly in their utilization of bows and arrows against eldritch beasts and other 'affronts to their god'."

*We've run some rudimentary tests and it seems current Confederate cartridge brass (composed of a 30% zinc blend) does indeed cause moderate discomfort to even severe pain in all tested individuals. I'm recommending the appropriate safety measures be taken when they're required to handle it, but overall it shouldn't prove a problem. It's a strict steel cased ammunition diet for the Foreign Legion anyway.

A peacekeeping mission and participation in limited search and destroy operations in Emeralda are the destination and as of current everything seems to be progressing well. Unfairly or not, its legionaries have garnered a reputation for being sober, serious, and just a wee bit humorless. Nevertheless, the so called ‘Irish Brigade’* is a welcome addition to the Foreign Legion. I've also made arrangements to see to it that the Sedik Specialized Infantry Battalions** have already begun formalized relations with other Confederate military forces outside the Legion, running joint training exercises with Infantry, Armored, and more recently, Marine forces. Compared to the other legionaries, knowing specifically how their allies in the Confederate Armed Forces fight is sure to become an asset, as it is my belief these Sedik legionaries have the numbers and hopefully soon the discipline and experience to integrate into any Division, on any battlefield.

Rhanawine legionaries on the other hand have been labeled as “culturally challenged" persons. This in Confederate military lingo translates roughly into the fact that a Battalion’s worth of semi-psychotic, demonically possessed individuals managed to pass basic without tearing any of their trainers, or each other, in two. However, against my better judgment, their strength, size, and sheer blood lust in combat make them ideal shock troopers. The Prime Minister for now seems to agree with this sentiment as well and she’s dispatched a portion of her personal guard from Aura to oversee the 3rd Rhanawine Mechanized Infantry Battalion in lieu of Confederate Army Officers. I’m shipping them all off to the Sylvia Line, the one place where they might be considered halfway socially acceptable and where there’s enough concentrated firepower and fighting to keep the group occupied well into the near future."

* I’ve seen to it that the 3,500 Irish nationals in the Legion have been organized under an umbrella brigade befitting their name.

** The 3,400 Sediks that have joined the Legion should provide enough manpower for three (3) Battalions worth of Legionaries.

"The Confederate Commandos, Lorethian International Brigades, 1st New Zepuhan Hussars, "Terrors of Landenburg", Herdite Naval Infantry, and the 4th Bremenn Mechanized Infantry Battalion. As the Legion's ranks swell with new recruits I can't help but feel something akin to being proud of seeing how far so many of these new Legionaries have come, from a handful of fresh faced foreigners just entering basic to the end result of well-trained Battalions worth of soldiers whose persistence and unflappable spirits have taken them further than anyone in the Confederacy could have imagined.

The Confederate Commandos are a perfect example of this transformation, possessing great proficiency with a wide range of tactics and weaponry, as well as their unmatched focus and determination, they've melded well with the hard-fighting frontline officers I've assigned to their garrison, the kind of men and mares leading by example in the field – they marshal their forces effectively at the battlefield level, ensuring that individual units operate at highest efficiency as the Commandos collectively grind down their opponents, securing victory through skilfully timed attacks and sheer strength of will. They are a redoubtable group of allies on any battlefield.

The Lorethian International Brigades themselves are also a recent addition to the Legion as well. Though uniformly inexperienced by Confederate military standards, the Lorethians have laser-like focus on the task of taking the fight to their enemies, in their own up close and personal style. Courageous to the extreme, they are also notably disciplined when working alongside their allies, with excess Lorethian legionaries even filling in for much needed manpower in select portions of the Zepuhan Hussars, who lack the necessary Legionaries to form a proper Battalion. Though some might question the volatility of putting Christians and Atheists together in the same unit, I'm confident the two groups will be professional enough to put it aside.

The Terrors of Landenburg* are trained to make the best of their sheer numbers, using fluid maneuver and aggressive shock assaults. Knowing that they've got the single largest denominational group in the Legion under their command, the Officers assigned to their command have come demand what might be considered peerless discipline and execution from their troops. This they use to direct the fast moving, hard hitting assaults their forces are slowly but surely becoming famous for.

The Herdite Naval Infantry are likely the most unconventional group of foreigners to join the Legion this time around. Despite the traditional cultural differences present among members of the Legion, working together off and on the field has seen the famous ‘Herdite mentality’ come out in earnest. While I’m just glad they haven’t burnt down their barracks, I haven’t had to actually discipline anypony yet, and slowly but surely I think they might actually be helping to build a proper spirit of camaraderie among the other Legionaries.

The 4th Bremenn Mechanized Infantry Brigade was also formed."

* The 6,000 Landenburgians that joined the Legion have been organized into a single 'Terrors of Landenburg' brigade to better train and coordinate them as a standing forces.

((OOC: Yet again RL time constraints and work have limited my posting ability. So the Confederate Commandos and Lorethian International Brigade will appear in my next update.))

Nation Name: The Greater Pony Herd
Citizen Demonym: Herdite
*Number of Volunteers: Battalion-worth
Do you wish to have a distinctive regimental name? Yes
If yes, please state it: Herdite Naval Infantry
Does your nation have any historical preferred way of fighting: We have long shifted from the old ways of fighting towards the contemporary doctrines of combined arms assault. Relatively small clusters of networked infantry support the advancing armor while it creates and exploits breaches in enemy formations together with air and artillery/missile projector assets. What stands out is the Herdite love affair with support weapons and mechanization what serves to expand the average lifespan and force multiplier of the average hoofpony and means that there is a larger than average support-weapon-to-personnel and armor-to-personnel ratio present with Herdite units at all times. Another thing of note is that most if not all Herdite hoofsoldiers receive extensive training in CQC, E-tool use as well as naval boarding and shipboard CQC action, the latter due to a rich naval tradition and a focus on naval combat.
Do you wish to have a specific cap badge? Yes
If yes, please depict or describe it: take the logo of the U.S. Navy Seals and swap the freedom eagle for a freedom phoenix
**What is the primary ethnicity/species of your nation's people and/or those wishing to join? Sapient equines divided more or less equally across the three sub-"races".
What is the main religion of your people? Harmonism
Is there something the regiments will be known for? They throw the best parties in the Foreign Legion, love to fraternize and sleep all around the barracks, allegedly as a way to boost friendly morale, and are often caught with less-than-legal substances. Oh, and they're also decent at CQC, boarding and entrenching we suppose

Do you wish to have a distinctive regimental name (Country X Fusiliers, Country Y Light Cavalry, etc)? No.
If yes, please state it:
Does your nation have any historical preferred way of fighting: Breheimians are traditionally trained in winter warfare, as the country is arctic, as well as specialising in defensive and asymmetrical warfare. All Breheimian males serve in the armed forces for a minimum of one year.
Do you wish to have a specific cap badge? Yes.
If yes, please depict or describe it: This.
**What is the primary ethnicity/species of your nation's people and/or those wishing to join? Nordic.
What is the main religion of your people? The Old Customs (Norse Mythology/Asatru). While Lutheran Christianity is the chief religion of Breheim, the vast majority of the volunteers are of this religion.
Is there something the regiments will be known for? They fully believe that dying in combat is the only way for them to enter Valhall or Folkvang (and indeed, this is the primary motivation for most of them to have joined the Sanian Foreign Legion in the first place), and thus are unlikely to retreat in combat unless it is for tactical purposes. Also, in old Berserker tradition, they will want to have wolf or bear furs as a part of their uniform.

((OOC: After a not-so-short-hiatus on my part, I am proud to say that the Sanian Foreign Legion is Now Recruiting! Again!))
