The Sanian Foreign Legion
"The Sanian Foreign Legion represents the best of Sania, simultaneously championing Sanian pride, sovereignty, and magnanimity."
"The protectors of Sania are exemplars; they protect Sania not by slaying her enemies, but by being shining examples of loyalty, honor, teamwork, and the willingness to sacrifice for the well-being of others."
"That is what being in the Sanian Foreign Legion is about."
- An excerpt from acting Brigadier General, Cornelius "Ridgeway" Tillinger, on the establishment of the Sanian Foreign Legion.
Overview
The Sanian Foreign Legion (SFL) is a specialized mercenary branch of the Sanian Confederate Armed Forces (SCAF). The Foreign Legion consists of multiple independent mechanized infantry battalions whose members are non-Sanian citizens serving under a cadre of regular Confederate officers in each battalion. The majority of SFL battalions are based at Neighvarro, Aura; and Augustgrad, Oldoran. Each enlistee agrees to serve in uniform for a minimum of ten years, after which he/she and his/her immediate family become naturalized as Sanian citizens. While serving, each Legionary receives a salary of 12,000 Nuyen (the equivalent of roughly 20,400 NSD) and benefits similar to those received by the active-duty military.
Initial training consists of an intense, six-week English-language course for those unable to communicate effectively in English. Following that, the recruits attend a 12-week Armed Forces training program. The training focus is on basic mechanized infantry tactics and security operations. Every graduate is qualified as a rifleman, with specialized training conducted within the Foreign Legion’s divisions as required. The Sanian Foreign Legion has split responsibilities similar to that of the Confederate Coast Guard for peacetime and wartime conditions. During peacetime, the SFL falls under the control of the Special Research Progress Administration’s Department of Homeland Security with a primary mission of augmenting the Confederate Border Patrol in border security operations. Daily operations include conducting extensive patrols of the border, freeing the Border Patrol to concentrate its efforts on operating fixed border checkpoints.
When directed by the Prime Minister of the Sanian Confederacy, command of the SFL shifts to the Sanian Confederate Armed Forces. While trained and equipped to carry out high-intensity combat operations, the primary role of the SFL under the SCAF is to serve as a designated peacekeeping force. This allows regular Army units to concentrate on high-intensity conflict scenarios, and dramatically aids the overall readiness of the Confederate Armed Forces. Aside from the core mechanized infantry units, each SFL division includes an engineer construction battalion. While the SFL has no need for combat engineers, construction engineers are in constant demand, particularly in training deployments to Third World nations. The ability to build schools, roads and irrigation systems contributes significantly to the success of any peacekeeping operation.

So long as those who which to serve in the Legion come with honor and integrity, all are more than capable of being accepted as brothers in arms, fellow citizens, and certainly welcome here.
***And finally, yes. As non-Sanian citizens each Legionary is inherently considered less valuable then their contemporaries in the more conventional portions of the military. However, columns of resolute Confederate Legionaries are an intimidating sight, and the provision of heavy fire support and coordination with other Armed Forces units to cover their advances is vital – time and again, Confederate field commanders are reminded during and after training that the Confederacy's vast manpower reserves and that of it's Legion does not give them license to be satisfied with costly victories anymore than actual defeats.
