Genders are most certainly not equal, and why should they be, when they are so different?

In Tavan society, females are almost always the ones to interact with foreigners, due to their natural capacity for reading social situations and generally high ability to adapt their behavior instinctively. The exception to this is when a male is either in a position of extreme power or the only one capable of properly explaining a complicated subject. To say that our society is matriarchal would be oversimplifying things, but it's generally a safe assumption that when you'll be meeting with a tavan representative, they will most likely be female, and they will probably treat you as your species prefers if they have the right knowledge to do so. This leads to the perception that they are more friendly and agreeable than their male counterparts.

Males of the species, despite being much less socially aware and even somewhat cold when it comes to interacting with other species, are much better at retaining and applying technical information in all fields. If ever a tavan invented something that changed their society, or won a war based on astute technical observation of the enemy's weaponry, you can bet they were probably male. They are also superior when it comes to combat, both in hand-to-hand and commanding massive fleets, due to a mind selected primarily for strategy and not diplomacy. This leads to the perception that they are more intelligent and analytic than their female counterparts.

If a job does not have a biological gender requirement, both men and women will do them, due to the structure of our education system. However, due to social differences between men and women (which are necessary to hold society together) and because some jobs favor the physical or mental traits more commonly found in one gender over another, in certain jobs, the male to female ratio will shift after a few months. OUtside of a few feminists in the big cities, no one considers this to be discrimination, simply a reflection of the differences of life.

However, tertiary education (of high degree) is more inviting to women as well as jobs that require self-defence. Think of it as a women's rights fatwa.

Guys however get the advantage of getting into parties first, and more jobs involving construction and hard labor are more inviting to men. Tertiary education involving Philosophy, Sociology, Math, and Theology, are more inviting to men.

Many women secretly train to become ninja's, as in the middle east.

Women are put through the EXACT same training as men in the military, and they quite oftenly fight with men as part of training. Women are expected (like men) to carry a person weighing 150 lbs while running through mud and rain, as part of a physical endurance test.

Olympic sports are co-ed,depending on the skill of the people. Women do not get an unfair advantage when it comes to sports (E.g javelin only weighing 600 grams instead of 800 grams.) Shot-put is also the same for both genders (8 Kg)

The rule is never women and children first. It is most in danger, to least in danger.

A man is not allowed to enter a women's beauty pageant if he is trans.

A woman cannot be a priest (However this is being very much debated in the government and we might pass a legislation about a woman getting involved in the church. After all, there was never anything said against that.)

Domestic violence is not looked any more severely on a woman than it is on a man.

Teachers (a primarily female job, our stats show) are required to take a basic self-defense class as a precaution.

All in all however, for who ascends to the throne first, it is simply the one who is most fit for being a ruler, not the first born.

As an overview, men and women are 50:50 in the eyes of the law, and usually 50:50 in the eyes of society.

The past centuries have erased many of the traditional economic and political inequalities: For example, the average income and the composition of legislative bodies are now very much balanced. A fully egalitarian society still seems like a remote utopia, however.
