Military Management

Postby Arlenton » Fri Jan 18, 2013 7:45 pm

How does your nation manage its military? How do you recruit troops and equip them? What are your uniforms like? How is your military organized? Is there conscription?

In Arlenton there is no federal military. We are made up of many counties. Each county is responsible for managing a militia, arming them, uniforming them, equipping them, etc. Each county government would buy the uniforms and equipment from private companies. The government doesn't provide very much except a standard handbook to each county that explains tactics and uniform standards. Our uniforms are either grey, brown or tan to show that they are Arlenton troops. Each county can add any color trim to its militias uniform to distinguish itself from other militias. Civilian cloths and hats can be used in case of shortages. Every 18 year old healthy male must take a month long basic training in each county. Males ages 16-up can be drafted or volunteer. If a major war breaks out each county is to put its militia under government control and this would form the Arlenton Army. The navy is the same way.

The Imperial and Royal armed forces consist of
-K.u.K Armee (Imperial and Royal army)
-K.u.k Kriegsmarine (Imperial and Royal navy)
-K.u.k Luftwaffe (Imperial and Royal air force)
The Emperor is the Commander in Chief of the Landwehr. The Ministry of Defence manages the military as well. Conscription only happens in war time if troops are needed. The military is well funded, most troops are equipped with steyr rifles. Some soldiers use their bending.

Ranks tend to be numerical in nature 1 being the lowest with no upper end other than not having enough troops to achieve higher ranks. They are also marked with weapon, platform specialty, and station specialty.
More than one is possible and is in fact required for all but the lowest ranks. Proficiency also has no upper limit.
Once the number of the mentioned categories gets to large, they stop including them in a visible manor on the ceremonial uniforms.
Usually the numbers work out to something similar to the following:
Rank (men under them),(designation number)-(proficiency),...,(designation number)-proficiency)
1(0)-(1 weapon or station)
2(5)-(1 platform or station)
3(36)-(3 platforms or stations)
4(222)-(9 platforms or stations)
5(1338)-(18 platforms or stations)
6(8034)-(18 platforms or stations)
7(48210)-(36 platforms or stations)
8(289266)-(216 platforms or stations)
9(1735602)-(1296 platforms or stations)

(N-1)(6*(the number of men lead under tier N-2)+6)
N(up to 6*(the number of men lead under tier N-1)+6)
Please note that the weapon, platform, and station numbers are the minimum required, unless the number is actually greater then what currently exists in our armed forces. The number tends to be artificially high to allow for use of additional dedicated systems in the future.
To be able to properly manage forces one must know the capabilities of everything under their disposal, either through direct or indirect means.

Special Forces follow a similar scheme although their rank and pay are shifted 3 ranks higher such that a special forces rank 1 is equivalent to a rank 4 in the general forces.

To clarify things a bit more, there is actually more than one level of Special Forces, the higher the level more proficient they are.
Each level is nearly equivalent to the entire level below.
The separation marks what have been the top 1% of the group below it and those individuals are equipped in a manner that suitable for such.

As for where they are stationed, typically most in the military are out exploring while a small amount is stationed in the levels above our home system.

The military as a whole is something one can chose to join but there are of course requires that one must meet to be able to join though, in both a physical and intellectual capacity.

The Streitkräfte(armed forces) of Belka are divided into several main and ancillary branches. The three main branches also known as the big three are the Bundeswehr(Federal Army), Luftwaffe(Air Force) & Kriegsmarine(navy). These three branches receive the majority of federal funding and share the burden of protecting Belka proper and the fatherland's interest abroad.

The Central Military Commission is the Government Organisation with responsibility for the military, named the Koy People's Army, which is divided into five branches.

- The Koy People's Ground Forces
- The Koy People's Naval Forces
- The Koy People's Air Forces
- The Strategic Artillery Guidance Bureau (manages and maintains Koyro's stockpile of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Weapons)
- The Special Operations Forces.

There is also the Supreme Revolutionary Guard. The 150'000 man personal guard of General Ohanka Jon Bak-su. Although General Ohanka is Supreme Commander of the Koy People's Army, the Supreme Revolutionary Guard take their orders directly from the Office of the Paramount Leader. The Supreme Revolutionary Guard itself is divided into 3 branches.

- The Supreme Revolutionary Ground Forces (General Security)
- The Supreme Revolutionary Sea Forces (Operate Missile Boats and Patrol Boats near General Ohanka's seaside residences, and operate his personal yacht +naval escort craft)

The Federal Armed Forces are split into the three Departments of Government.

The Land Services Department consists of three branches, the Army, Army Air Corps, and Ground Civil Defense Authority. It is headed by the Marshal.
The Naval Services Department consists of four branches, the Fleet, the Marine Corps, the Air Force, and the Coastal Civil Defense Authority. It is headed by the Admiral of the Navy.
The Internal Control Department consists of two actual branches, the Federal Guard and the Strategic Weapons Division; however, there are many, many paramilitary units that are not considered military forces. It is headed by the Chancellor.

The Federal Armed Forces are completely comprised of volunteers, and the government has no intention to change that any time soon.

There are also the State Volontaris; these are run by their respective Continent-States and take orders from their Marquess. They are much smaller than the actual Armed Forces, but they're more than capable of standing on their own.

We operate a national service of 5 years for every able bodied person between 18 and 25. After they have completed their service, they can choose to continue in the armed services as a full time occupation, or can return to civilian life. But will remain as a reservist, who can be called up and mobilized in the event of crisis.

All recruits go through an initial stage of medical exams, background checks and inspection, and then begin basic training. They are given their basic fatigues, but not a full military uniform. Basic training consists of 16 weeks of PT exercises, firearms drills, obstacle courses, kit maintainance, orienteering, engineering, and various field exercises. After this period, recruits can choose a specialist role, such as piloting, engineering, interpretation etc. They will then receive further training in their specialist field, however the remainder will proceed to the second stage.

Second stage training consists of 18 months of very gruelling training. Daily marches are now longer, and in full kit, and accompanied by more difficult rifle drills. Hand to hand combat is taught regularly, (and results in several fatalities every time) Environment training of four weeks (each) takes these recruits to several different environments; jungle, mountain, sea, desert, CBRN and zero-g.
Here they will learn basic survival skills, instructions on use of specific kit and how to negotiate obstacles. They will also be educated on hostage negotiation, enemy firearms and tactics, military history, how to effectively use communication, as well as how to fluently speak a language. They are given driving tests on military vehicles, and more complex engineering.

After they have completed second stage, they enter the final stage, and are allowed to wear the crest of the military on their shoulder pads. In stage three, they undergo five combat simulations, using stun ammunition, in each different environment. Here they are expected to survive, adapt and succeed. Anything less, and they are not selected for military service.

The recruits that manage to pass this are accepted with a very flamboyant parade, and are given their dress blues, and their full military uniform. This process usually includes exorbitant amounts of alcohol, as they are likely to see deployment soon...

How does your nation manage its military?

The Armed Forces of the Radiatian Federation consists of four uniformed branches:

The President is Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, although sometimes command will be delegated to the Minister of Defence.

The Minister of Defence oversees the Ministry of Defence, the largest government department in the Radiatian Federation, which is headquartered in the Fortress Building in Federation Square, Xerconia.

The Ministry is divided into the Department of the Army, which overseas the RFA and RSEF, the Department of the Navy which overseas the RFSF, the Department of the Air Force which overseas the RFAF, and the Department of Intelligence, which overseas the Radiatian Special Operations Division (R-SOD), Radiatia's intelligence service. R-SOD is not generally considered a military branch even though its budget falls under the budget for the Ministry of Defence.

State governments also have their own "State Armies" or National Guards, which can be federalised by the President. States with coastlines also operate a Coast Guard which can also be federalised if necessary.

How do you recruit troops and equip them?

Main Article regarding conscription

Radiatia maintains a large professional force, who make up the bulk of the active troops. There is also 18 months of conscription, and conscripts make up most of Radiatia's reserve forces. Former conscripts, that is private citizens who have military training, who are aged between 18 and 27 can still be called up for service in an emergency, even if they have already done their 18 months service. These people are referred to as the 'Auxiliary' force, and only in the event of a full blown invasion would they ever likely be called upon.

The Radiatian federal government spends almost half of its budget on defence.

The military organisation of His Majesty's Armed Forces is designed to allow maximum inter-service co-operation as well as to maintain a Permanent Readiness Force able to be deployed to any part of the world within 36 hours of notification.

As well as the traditional military branches of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, a further two branches exist in HMAF: the Joint Support Service and the Royal Medical Service. This is designed to relieve logistical burdens from the three combat branches, as well as to increase the resources spent on humanitarian and state-building operations (the JSS is a purely administrative service whose 'soldiers' act only to provide logistical support, co-ordinate joint operations, and organise non-combat objectives).

Because of a high amount of co-operation between the branches, equipment is designed to be fairly interchangeable or to be used in conjunction with all of the other branches. Therefore, all services are issued the same highly-modular assault rifles (the SCAR-L) and battle rifles (the SCAR-H, which can also be used in the designated marksman role). Furthermore, due to Anglican strategies and tactics, a heavy emphasis is placed on Special Forces, of which there are multiple 'regiments' each suited to a specific purpose.

Training is an extremely long process as, due to the relatively small size of HMAF in comparison to most other armed forces for nations of this size and due to the focus on naval capabilities, Albion relies on small numbers of highly-trained professional forces. Combat uniforms are standardised through all services and use ATACS camouflage. The Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Anglican Army each use separate ceremonial dress, however, and the Royal Medical Service and Joint Support Service use their own ceremonial dress.

All-in-all, HMAF is a fairly unconventionally-organised armed force by modern standards, with a focus on power-projection, Special Forces combat operations and humanitarian state-building operations. More information can be found in our factbook, here.

How is your military organized? The Freehold Military Force (FMF) is the unified defense structure of the Freehold of Katzen. It contains land, air sea, space and support units.

Is there conscription? No. The Constitution of Katzen does not allow for conscription into the FMF.

How does your nation manage its military?
The Executor is the symbolic commander-in-chief of the Freehold Military Force. This is due to the Executor being the chairperson of the Alþingi, which holds the supreme authority.

The Director of Defense is a civil officer appointed by the Executor with the advice and consent of the Alþingi, is by statute second in command over those organisations which are part of the Department of Defense. This includes the FMF, Office of Defense Administration, Office of Defense Intelligence, and Office of Veterans Affairs.

The Marshal is normally the highest-ranking officer in the Freehold Military Force. The Marshal acts as the highest military authority, but is subordinate to the Alþingi. The Marshal is responsible for ensuring the organization, policy, plans, and programs for the FMF as well as advising the Executor, the Alþingi and the Director of Defense on matters involving the FMF.

The combined arms operating units of the FMF are called Legions. A Legion is made up of a Combat Battalion, Naval Fleet, Air Group, Space Group, and Support Battalion. Legions report to the Marshal. The Commanding Officer of a Legion is usually a Colonel or Brigidier.

The various Battalions/Groups/Fleet are units covering a specific branch of arms. These are commanded by a Captain or Major.

Companies make up Battalions, Squadrons make up Air Groups, Batteries make up Space Groups, Divisions make up Fleets. These are usually commanded by Lieutenants or Captains. These are the smallest military unit capable generally of independent operations (i.e., not attached to a higher command), although there are smaller units that are self-sustaining..

Infantry Companies( 180 men) are made up of Platoons. Platoons (40 men) are usually lead by a Warrant Leader or Senior Warrant and have two Squads. Squads (20 men) are lead by a Sergeant or Senior Sergeant and made up of Fire Teams. Fire Teams are have a Rifle Man, Light Machine Gunner, Assistant Gunner and Team Leader who is usually a Corporal.

The basic unit in the Freehold Military Force is the individual Legionnaire.

How do you recruit troops and equip them? The FMF is an all volunteer organisation. Legionnaires are recruited from the residents throughout Katzen. Legionnaires are usually equipped and supplied by their unit logistics section.

What are your uniforms like?
There are three main types of uniforms worn by the FMF: the Utility Uniform, the Service Uniform, and the Dress uniform.

The Utility Uniform consists of a Multicam Operators Cap, Blouse, and Trousers worn with ruff-out tan boots.

The Service Uniform is the equivalant to business attire. It comes in three variants. The Service "Charlies" are Olive Green Pants and a Khaki short Sleeve shirt worn with a Olive Green bergmutze style cover and black oxford shoes. Service "Bravos" are the same as the Charlies but with a Khaki longsleeve Banded-collar shirt. Service "Alphas" add a Olive Green Mandarin-collar jacket to the Service Bravo.

The Dress Uniform is the formal attire of the FMF. It too comes in three variants. The Dress "Charlies" are Navy Blue Pants and a Khaki short Sleeve shirt worn with a Navy Blue peaked cap/combination cover and black oxford shoes. Dress "Bravos" are the same as the Charlies but with a Khaki longsleeve Banded-collar shirt. Dress "Alphas" add a Black Mandarin-collar jacket to the Dress Bravo. Swords approporiate the the Legionnaire's rank are usually authorized to be worn with Dress Uniforms.

The Advancer military is provided by TNP Corporation, a megacorporate mercenary outfit. Corporate Assault Troopers, or CATs, are well-equipped with the latest technology from TNP's own AI labs, and are trained extensively in a variety of realistically simulated scenarios before being assigned to contracts. When on contracts, overall command is given to the employer, in this case the Internal Affairs and Safeguard & Security Administrates.

CATs usually make no distinction between roles, being able to access appropriate training and information in real-time over the battlenet, but in the case of the Advancer contract they are divided into two sections: shipside (working aboard and from Razor, the battleship which defends the capital), and groundside (the routine patrol and infantry troops). Shipside CATs specialize in the operation of Razor's systems and fighter/shuttle complement, while groundsiders specialize in direct combat and the operation of armoured vehicles. This arrangement is designed to ensure maximum efficiency in most scenarios.

As for kit, CATs wear the appropriate variant of Corporate KA-899 "Panther" series armour, making them clearly identifiable by its distinctive blue colour. They carry an individual weapon (typically the T-22z GPR mentioned in the appropriate thread) along with situational equipment such as grenades and electronic warfare pods. Heavy weapons are issued on a mission-by-mission basis, as are vehicles such as the Tiger X B heavy tank and the Paramour-2 APC.

The command structure is simple: the strategic AIs on Razor are in overall command, giving orders to each 20-man troop individually. Troops consist of a Troop Commander and 19 troopers. Mission-specific personnel and drones are added to a troop on the trooper level. When a troop reaches 40 personnel total, one trooper is designated as Tactical Adjutant and given subsidiary command of the 20 non-standard troop members.

How does your nation manage its military?
By using a system of superiors and subordinates. Military spending and use of Forces is controlled by the Elder Council as well as the Grand Archon. Communication between the branches is usually done via the logistics department or CITADEL Intelligence, Tactics and Deployment department. The Combined Armed Forces are divided into their general branches, which are further divided into several Divisions, Brigades, Battalions, Companies, Platoons, Squads, and Fire Teams, which are each controlled by their own officers and commanders.

How do you recruit troops and equip them?
Recruiting troops is not hard here. We're a Stratocracy with conscription laws, and once a citizen completes his or her time as a Recruit, he or she keeps his or her rank. Conscription is in charge for both male and female citizen, but just if they do not have any jobs or necessary tasks to do. The average duration of conscription is 1 year. After conscription, every month, three days are reserved for training refreshment, to keep the citizens up-to-date regarding military equipment, tactics and training doctrines. Age of conscription: Minimum 18 to maximum 26.
General equipment is stored in barracks, respectively lockers with the citizen's name and ID number on it, and distributed at the beginning of the conscription or training refreshment. Voluntary, regular professional soldiers keep their equipment in the lockers of their designated barrack rooms.

What are your uniforms like?
Depends on the task. The general uniforms are simple, durable, high-quality clothes. During training exercises or wartime, soldiers get additional pieces of uniform, for example body armor, uniform subsystems, etc.

How is your military organized?
Combined Armed Forces Branches:
  • Vecerian Royal Army
  • Vecerian Royal Navy
  • Vecerian Royal Air Force
  • Vecerian Royal Special Forces
  • Vecerian Royal Militia Forces (Border Control, City Watch)
  • Vecerian Royal Logistics Department
The separate branches are further divided into smaller units.
  • 1 Branch/Corp (led by one Archon) = Several Divisions
  • 1 Division (led by one Zenturio Primus) = 5 Brigades
  • 1 Brigade (led by one Zenturio) = 5 Battalions
  • 1 Battalion (led by one Kommissar Primus) = 5 Companies
  • 1 Company (led by one Kommissar) = 4 Platoons
  • 1 Platoon (led by one Praetor Primus) = 4 Squads
  • 1 Squad (led by one Praetor) = 2 Fire Teams
  • 1 Fire Team (led by one Legionnaire) = 5 Soldiers
Is there conscription?
Yes, see above.

How does your nation manage its military?
Briefly put, it doesn't. The government has no direct connection with the military. The Ministry of Defense is essentially just a liaison to keep the government and the people informed about what the military, as a whole, is doing.

How do you recruit troops and equip them?
The Army is based on the regimental system. Each regiment is autonomous, responsible for its own recruiting, procurement and training. It answers only to the public who fund it through donations. (In some cases, regiments are organized into larger units for special purposes - e.g. the heliborne regiments of the Air Cavalry Brigade.)

Weapons and some other items of equipment are developed by the Takeapenny Arsenal and manufactured by civilian contractors. Virtually everything the Army uses is available for civilian sale as well and such sales sometimes subsidize the cost to the military.

What are your uniforms like?
Uniforms are, above all, practical. There are no dress uniforms. Infantry uniforms are camouflage, with many pockets, padded knees, drawstring cuffs, etc. Uniforms in the Tank Corps, for example, are "grease coloured" so they don't show the dirt.

How is your military organized?
As mentioned above, the basic unit is the regiment, each with a peacetime strength of two battalions and a wartime strength of four battalions. A regiment can easily mobilize in case of war by calling up its reservists to form the requisite additional battalions.

The battalion is the standard unit for overseas deployment - e.g. for peacekeeping duties.

Sometimes, four regiments are combined to form a brigade and, more rarely, two brigades are combined to form a division. (Note that the Air Cavalry Brigade is nominally a brigade but has the strength of a division, eight regiments)

The Light Infantry, which forms the bulk of the Army, is designed to be air-mobile. Thus, a standard platoon has thirty-two troopers so that a C-130 Hercules transport can carry two platoons.

Is there conscription?
Certainly not. While it is possible for conscripts to become good soldiers, we don't believe in forcing people to defend their country. Besides, we already have far more volunteers than we can use.

The Meinkraftian Armed Forces are comprised of seven Parts.

The Army

The Navy

The Air Force

The Engineer's Guild

The Stratosphere Division

The Marine Corps

Special Forces

Here is a picture of a soldier from the 144th Infantry Regiment:

Uniform:
Infantry Regulars wear the abovementioned attire. All officers wear a blue beret in place of a helmet, and their rank is displayed on their collar. Naval Officers wear gray suits (Like Imperial Officers), with gray kepis. Sailors wear white square rig caps along with a white/grey jumpsuit. Rank is displayed on the breastpocket. Naval Engineers wear red jumpsuits. Land Engineers wear yellow work coats and grey helmets. They sometimes wear camouflage jackets. Air Force pilots wear dark green jackets and nylon pants. Rank is displayed on the collar. Special Forces.......(Loose Lips Sink Ships). Now excuse me, I need to update my factbook.

We have an army, a navy, an Air Force, and a coast guard. Each is completely voluntary; enlisted personnel serve two or three-year terms.
