Why would you need to see to fly a thing like that? Should you not be using radar and other instruments? I mean it's not like you will be looking out for splashes in the water to check your hits.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The only reason I could even think of for why visual is still needed for such a flying machine is if they needed to check for obstacles during very low level flying (to prevent collisions with mountains, skyscrapers or the trees of Kashyyk from Star Wars).

Why such a vessel would want to be that close to the ground (instead of I don't know, being up in the stratosphere or in space where they belong) is another question altogether.
LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR YOU. HATE.

And a top mounted warship like bridge would be completely useless in this as it won't provide good visibility in the places that count like the bottom of the hull and immediately at the front/sides. What you would really want for those is a set of distributed observation posts and maybe a hugely scaled up version of those parking radars used on cars today.

Plenty of reasons, provided your structure is strong enough to handle reentry.
-The best is fuel, simply put. General assumption would be that the carrier (if that's truly what it is) has a fission, fusion, or some other large power source where it doesn't need to worry about it's own fuel, but it's aircraft do, or perhaps they use air-breathing engines, or hybrid engines which are typically more effective in atmosphere since they don't need an oxidizer.
-If you already control the skies, then who cares where you are?
-General rule of space-combat. Best place to be when facing an enemy with overwhelming firepower? Between him and his planet (provided you need to engage him toe-to-toe). Preferably over something like a city he cares about. Means he's not going to pull out the big-guns and you get free-range to fire at him with whatever you want.
If he just so happens to be in the upper-atmosphere, then you go below him.
-Or stealth. Use the planet to cover you from the enemy radar.

Same reason you have a bridge today. Maneuvering, monitoring flight-ops, visual spotting, and the like. Making sure you're not running into anyone else during an UNREP.
Again, the scenario set forth by the artist is that most of the tech is the same as it is today, just better engines.

You can see quite a bit from a top-mounted bridge. If you're going to land (which the artist has depicted in some of his other works with smaller vessels) you obviously would want a ventral-docking bridge, or at least cameras.
And quite likely there are distributed observation posts. The artist is basing it off of modern vessels, and that's what modern vessels use. Lookouts.

Fair enough point; although launching atmosphere-only-craft can still be done in altitudes higher than what one would have to risk collisions with tall terrestrial objects.

-If you already control the skies, then who cares where you are?

Generally speaking, higher altitudes would mean higher radar/sensor horizons, which are desirable for the purposes of monitoring/detecting forces on the ground. It is more efficient to patrol a world with fewer such sky-ships if they can see much more of the patrol area. Of course, staying in orbit means they get to see far, far more of the planet... provided their sensors are up to spec for the task.

To get to such positions requires so much go right for you and go wrong for the enemy (of which many unflattering assumptions must be made); and even then its so excessively risky that even the most cliche-ed space operas wouldn't do it.

Presuming the enemy cares about his world that much, if the enemy has allowed you to be between his world and his fleet without so much as a running gunbattle/missile exchange beforehand, then he's grossly incompetent and has probably already lost the battle before it has even begun.

On the flipside, if he has decent planetary shielding and/or anti-orbital weapons (and you have not conquered his world before hand), you've now trapped yourself between his fleet and his planetary shield/anti-orbital guns. Enjoy your defeat.

If you have conquered his world already, then shouldn't you be driving him away from your new real-estate rather than trying to hold it hostage?

-Or stealth. Use the planet to cover you from the enemy radar.

This may be more plausible (using the planet's background radiation + a decent cloaking system - better than using cloaking out there in deep space where you'll stand out due to your energy output no matter what you do). However if your enemy has a super-sensitive system for detecting energy spikes and radiation this may be less useful.

The problem with the ACWs is they're obviously more designed for a post-modern human group who likely found some amazing engine/anti-gravity tech that enabled them to make space-ships (which is more or less precisely what the artist was going for, having seen that and others like it on his dA account); much of the tech still is quite apparently modern rather than FT. Most importantly - the bridge is placed along the external hull, rather than being protected, due to lack of modern advancements allowing for effective piloting of a vessel internally. It's possible, sure (even with modern ships, not having a super-fancy Secondary Conn which would rely on phonetalkers as "eyes"), but not 100% practical with video-feeds as of yet. The Explorer (or Armageddon as you call it) depicted follows those same lines.

Yeah, um. You know that the fleet of ACWs depicted are not exactly what they actually look like. The pictures I gave were an accurate depiction of my ships, not their exact appearance.

Just thick armor that eventually leads to important stuff, the middle one features a camera system.

Though in the future, the Gettysburg Class of Cruisers will be refitted with newer MAC's that will be in those locations, while other improvements are made, but for now, that is what we have.

Dishes out a sweet yield of 38 kilotons in the cannons however, and features a rather constantly telsa cannon farther back than the MAC's, great for screwing with enemy tech while also bolting them with a good amount of plasma.
