There's an easier way, simply point a few 155mm their way or lock on with your illuminators/targetting radars and ask for a surrender, a damaged ship as you detailed is hardly going anywhere fast

It could have valuable information on it, such as other military maneuvers.

But why risk Heli's and groups of men when you can secure a surrender with little risk and the same likelihood that they will most likely destroy sensitive information, all it takes is an incinerator, a match or a toss off the side.

Because that same information would be easier to get the other way, as they would likely be afraid of what was happening.
Also, that information is VERY valuable. If we know what everyone else is up to, then we can win the war.

While it is possible in some broad terms you might be able to capture some crewmen alive and question them for intel, frankly, if a modern warship's crew have decided not to surrender, it's virtually impossible to capture it without serious casualties (and if they are truly determined, there are ways they can make capture absolutely impossible, such as scuttling.)

The guys that hold control over such information always take care of destroying it first before battling. After they will destroy the files they will fights. That is part of their obligations and their training. Also attacking an aircraft carrier for a take over will need 10.000+ men considering it has a crew of 5000 people. And not to mention the real likelihood of it being scuttled to prevent it from falling in enemy hands.

Major Arcana Class (BC)
ILS The Fool (BC-0)
ILS The Magician (BC-1)
ILS The High Priestess (BC-2)
ILS The Empress (BC-3)
ILS The Emperor (BC-4)
ILS The Hierophant (BC-5)
ILS The Lovers (BC-6)
ILS The Chariot (BC-7)
ILS Justice (BC-8)
ILS The Hermit (BC-9)
ILS Wheel of Fortune (BC-10)
ILS Strength (BC-11)
ILS Temperance (BC-14)
ILS The Tower (BC-16)
ILS The Star (BC-17)
ILS The Moon (BC-18)
ILS The Sun (BC-19)
ILS Judgement (BC-20)
ILS The World (BC-21)

The number skipping was intentional, to adhere to the "prevailing" Major Arcana listing. No visual representation as of yet (I spent most of my time dealing with tanks), but they're of course quite modern. They have more than enough of the heavy guns, 8"-14", and of course has the missiles as well. It also has some space for some anti-submarine warfare weaponry, and has sufficient AA capabilities. Ideally of course they have smaller ships nearby to provide even more of those two.

I will find a way.

Pretty much the only way is IR photography and that requires
a) the handwriting on the paper to be pretty large (at least a centimetre and a half in diameter)
b) the paper to not be turned to ash

Both of those criteria are not met by the hypothetical and completely implausible "war winning plans".

*shrug*

We usually come up with anything. Some of them just sound cool (Vigilance-class Battleship, Ozymandias-class Supercarrier, Orwellian-class SSN, Liberty-class LCS, etc). Others we name after people. Emperors, American presidents, generals and war heroes among others (William Tecumseh Sherman-class Destroyer, Zumwalt-class Destroyer, Wright-class Amphibious Assault Ship, Wells-class Amphibious Transport Dock, etc). We sometimes recycle names from the USN for tradition's sake (A William Sherman Destroyer is named The Sullivans, an Ozymandias bears the name Enterprise, etc).

The navy is very informal in that regard.

I barely know anything about naval warfare, but I'm simply wondering, is there anyone here who thinks that railguns could reinvent the battleship in the future?

No, at least not the way people tend to think it.

First, while railguns may be viable in the future as weapons, they won't be the only hypersonic weapons out there. They'll face competition from hypersonic cruise missiles for sure, and possibly tactical anti-ship ballistic missiles depending on how far crazy take that technology.

A railgun's key niche (just like normal guns today) will still be disposing of targets not worth hypersonic missiles, i.e. land-attack/interdiction/shore bombardment.

Second, a railgun still has less range than powered missiles. The most optimistic railgun range will still be outranged by an IRL Tomahawk SLCM.

Third, the battleship with traditional heavy armour (or god forbid lolCIWS) won't be making comebacks anyway with railguns because they will likely punch through any armour or protection known.
