In all fairness, there was a pretty good reason they were under-used. When you make an investment that big, you try to keep it from getting blown up. Plus, their loss would have been a huge morale loss, due to its symbolism (Yamato being an archaic name for Japan, the ship was basically supposed to represent Japanese spirit incarnate), so it had to be protected. As for whether it could have had much impact, maybe a tactical impact in a set-piece battle, but not really in the grand-scheme of things.

The only chance Yamato and the rest of the IJN's senkan had to influence the conflict was Guadalcanal, particularly post Battle of Santa Cruz, as both sides at the time had marginal aircraft carrier strength left over after all the losses from Coral Sea to Santa Cruz. A concerted attack by the Japanese battleship forces there could have made the difference in the various ship-fighting actions, especially as the US battleship force was itself depleted (they only had at most three modern battleships available for that front). A victory at Guadalcanal of course wouldn't change the long-term outcome of the war, but it would have certainly done much to threaten Australia and New Guinea and prolong the conflict further.

They did not, because IJN High command were imbeciles who were too huffed up on their vaunted "Decisive Battle" off the Japanese coast, thinking Guadalcanal was just a remote battle. Then again, their long-term thinking was always particularly poor.

Is it possible to have a recoilless armament on a warship with a muzzle velocity comparable to that of a conventional armament in the same caliber?

IJN High command were imbeciles

I'm pretty sure that the lack of intelligence was the key to the uncoordinated attacks that the IJN launched. They lacked detailed ship movement that the USN enjoyed so much, and often mistook ships, visual markers, etc, for something they where not. Samar and Leyte come to mind fairly quickly, as does Midway and Philippine Sea. Though you could certainly say that the choice to war the allies was the stupidest military decision that Japan ever made.

To my great consternation, it turns out my submarine hull is too short to put my planned SLBM tubes in without modification. I was hoping to avoid any major structural changes to SSBN variant, but it may be necessary.

I'm also wondering why you have 2 completely diffrent types of gun CIWS.
I'm not sure how much exactly how much deck pentration RAM has, but I think the forward mount over the bridge is a bit too short for a RAM mount.

You might want to make her flush deck and extend the the bow by 30-40 feet as at the moment in any sort of swell on the bows will ship water around and over the 155mm, a breakwater on the bow might alleviate the issues that come with a bow with no flare. Also have the flat surfaces on the rear hangar wall and under B position are really undesirable for low RCS, try a 30 degree slant.
