Then I really wish you luck with your sailors trying to shoot down a swarm of missiles traveling at 600 mph towards your ship using hand cranked 40 mm.... You only need 1-2 CIWS for defense. Your main threat is anti-ship missiles since aircraft are easier to hit with your vertically launched SAM missiles and about 1-3 hits from an anti-ship missile would destroy your ship. Those WWII 40mm are pretty much worthless and just take up space where you can place torpedo tubes or some other equipment.

I guess the loss is kinda okay though, we have a huge not!600 ship navy plan and the three lost were from the early 50s. We have 5 under construction, 2 near completion.

You could turn a few of them into sea control carriers. I would say you could put 8 VTOL fighters and 4 helicopters like the RL Spanish navy Dedalo. Keep them close to the shores and use them for convoy escort and ASW/ Littoral Operations. However you should expect to loss a lot of them to anti-ship missiles since they don't have any CIWS. Maybe place a Phalanx CIWS on the bow or stern for a little added protection since they are self contained.

I would move the rolling airframe Mk-144 Guided Missile Launcher to be above the hanger where it will have a greater field of fire and won't be as cramped.

I like to look at War Plan Red. It was the US plan in the 1930's to determine how the US would fight a war against the British Empire. It would have pitted the US Navy against the Royal navy to defend NYC and the East coast. It would also lead to the invasion of Canada to prevent the british from land on the mainland US. To be honest thought it was mainly a bunch of crap that was given to some young planners in the military to give them jobs in the 30's. It was pretty unrealistic but the US had war plans for a war against every nation. In fact a variant of War Plan Orange was used against Japan in WW2.

In the year 1978, the Aznazian navy scrambled to find a ship that would counter the Ophion missile ships that carried up to 500 missiles. In order to keep the vessels as cheap as possible the navy restricted the length to 220 m long. The Santa Elva Class was designed from 1978-1984 and the first vessel was launched in 1985. When the Cold War with Ophion ended in 2002, the Aznazian government cut funding to the project leaving only 5 commissioned vessels in service. In 2004 they were re-fitted with more modern search radars and in 2008 were given missile based CIWS. All five are still in Aznazian service and are set to continue to serve well past 2025.

Consider the SeaRAM Missile System. Doesn't take up much more deck space than a Phalanx CIWS, and it is self contained so no below deck space is needed.

The picture you posted is a RAM Block 2 (Not the SeaRam)... which is not self contained and holds 21 missiles.

The self-contained SeaRam takes up the same space as a Phalanx but only holds 11 missiles.

That is the only cheap VTOL that would be out there behind the Harrier.

The only other Soviet style design would be the Yak-141 which was only a prototype.

My main concern is how compact torpedoes and VLS can be. Could, theoretically, a UAV be launched from a tube or VLS armed with some light ordnance (two 500-lbs or a few missiles)?

The Cormorant would be able to carry ordnance but it would mainly be used for scouting targets for cruise missiles from the Submarine.

If you are going for coast defense why so many aircraft carriers? Those typically are used for power projection. For coastal defense shore based airfields would be less exoensive to build and maintain.

yes, but as a comparison to my region, most people have more, and as you may know, thes QE class is about half the size of the US's new ford class. Maybe I should take it down though.

I was wondering more specifically two things:
1. the troop carrying capabilities of the amp assaults and helides, the posted numbers online are very low, to me it seems like they could take more troops...

2. So how good are the freedom class littorals? I compared the independence to them, and liked the freedom better, but they also don't fit for my low draft inshore slot that I need filled...

The QE is 57 meters shorter than the Gerald Ford Class. The QE is not small like her predecessors.

Modern warships are designed to fight a nuclear war. They're probably safe from any reasonable EMP attack. The computers won't explode and the mains won't flip. You might have radar blackouts where you can't see things on that bearing for like some tens of seconds, which is the most dangerous thing a nuclear weapon does to a warship (or surface fleet) besides being caught in a fireball. Your biggest worry is what comes after the nukes, like anti-shipping missiles attacking while your radars are blinded from nuclear explosions.

If it's just an EMP bomb or something that isn't a nuke, the warship really won't care.

I know about the effects of nuclear weapons on ships but I thank you and Spirit of Hope for clearing up the issue about EMP's. I felt that my ships would it be effected but not too severely. However what types of radars and electronics would be down after an EMP? Would it be mechanical systems that are important to the engines or electric systems used to launch more missiles?

Also how do nuclear explosions blind radars?

Norfolk was also quiet impressive to see from the water tour. I got to see the USS Bataan in the BAE drydock, the USS Cole, the Wisconsin and the USS Harry S. Truman along with 3 other Wasp's, 2 San Antonio's, 8 Burke's and 6 Tico's, 3 Los Angeles', and 8 resupply ships.
