Is PDW even necessary term to have around or was it invented as part of marketing plot?

I've never understood it.

Just use a short barreled Assault rifle with a folding stock or a bullpup if you need a more compact weapon for your rear-echelon troops/tankers/pilots.

Large caliber service pistols can fire vest piercing bullets too.

Closest would be assault rifle, but they are much smaller and use different cartridges that would be to small for a rifle.
SMG doesn't work because it doesn't use pistol cartridges.

Because studies show that helicopter pilots can't get to stowed weapons in time and thus need a weapon they can wear, preferably one with more firepower than an M1911 and a similar weight.

But I don't understand why they couldn't be under existing categories, despite using slightly funnier cartridges. D:

SMGs and rifles are line weapons. By definition and also by who they're issued to, PDWs aren't line weapons, so probably shouldn't fall under the category of some form of line weapon.

There are compact assault rifles available that fire whole intermediate cartridges.

Because the US Army did studies which found that not all people who needed a PDW could grab a carbine/sub carbine and therefore needed one they could wear. A weapon similar to the PDR (a bullpup chambered in .221 fireball that was in use with the airforce) was even considered in these studies but was ruled out because of its size.

In other words, the PDW concept came about because carbines and sub carbines couldn't fill that niche.

Based on that, I'd say that the ideal PDW would be a Colt SCAMP in .38 Super with a 150mm barrel, sliding wire stock and the M39B projectile. That or a rechambered VBR PDW.

I don't think you can get a real SMG that size, maybe a machine pistol. But those aren't any more use then a regular pistol would be.

In that case, I'm looking for a machine pistol.
