Not a lot of difference. The only reason we have 7.62mm rounds today is because they're 0.3 inches in imperial notation.

I'm just thinking. If we used 7.7x55mm rounds instead of 7.62x51mm rounds in machine guns, sure recoil would be a bit higher but destructive force would increase as well. And recoil doesn't really matter that much if you're mounted on a Humvee.

The Vermont class of guided missile destroyers (DDGs) is the United States Navy's first class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar. 7.7/.303 rounds exist and perfrom more or less indentically to full power/full calibre .30/7.62mm rounds as does 7.92mm mauser

exisiting 7.7mm roudns include .303 british (7.7x56R) and the japanese 7.7x58mm Arisaka and 7.7x58SR all of which are in the same 3-3.5kJ region as 7.62x51mm

Hummers mount either fifties, or TOW rocket launchers.
And, in lieu of front windows, 25mm autocannons.

No. There's no way I'd be using a .50 round in anything other than HMGs and bolt-action sniper rifles.

But you would put HMGs on jeeps.

You also stick LMGs and GPMGs on jeeps and hummers. Infact there are more GP and troop carrier hummers rolling around with mounted minimis and M60s/M240s than there are specialest weapon carriers with M2s or Mk19s.

Benomia: I know this might be a shocking suggestion but why not actually do the research on the stuff you spam out? An 8-10mm medium mahcine gun is certainly doable and as the .338 LWMMG Puzikas postesd shows people are still working on the concept as they have been since the tail end of ww1.

The wikipedia cartridges by calibre lsits are pretty good for finding out about all sorts of cartridges: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_mm_caliber and the likes of tony williams website (better yet his wodnerful books) and forgotten weapons are very useful for fleshing out both historical stuff and prior art and what epople are currently working on.
