I'd find 5.7 to be a far better round than plain old 9mm, yes, but at the same time I wonder if ICly I should even continue to issue sidearms anymore. What say you guys about issuing carbines/PDWs instead?

As long as it can be drawn as quick as Pistol, then sure you have the power of a rifle cartridge and the ROF of a SMG.

There's also the respect factor of a pistol; it generally implies you're a somebody.

It's also useful when your main weapon is bulky like an HMG but allows you some measure of self defence.

So as an officer/driver/crew-served-weaponry issue then fine, but not to everyone.

Maybe not bought your commission but in a lot of countries social status still has an effect; even if it's just in the educational requirements. A lot of armies want graduates.

And this is NS. I RP a Confederacy of Duchies. If you're not from the right sort of family (middle-class upwards) a commission isn't too likely.
