In the Sultanate of Sharifistan the board games chess (popular at all ages), Risk (popular amongst the youth) and Scrabble are actively promoted by the government.
Chess and Risk are commonly used in military officer academies and are played in military officers' clubs whilst cluedo is enjoyed by police cadets.
Chess is also encouraged in prison as a form of rehabilitation, encouraged people to think ahead about the consequences of their actions.

Chess, Checkers and Dominoes are the most popular traditional board games.

Monopoly, Risk and Life are the more lighthearted board games that are popular.

Any board game that an average nuclear family in the U.S. or Canada would most likely be found in a closet somewhere. The President herself is partial to Sorry!

A lot of games with few materials needed, a few rules, but a lot of strategic depth. Several chess variants, as well as mahjong (but not the 'pick the same tiles' version), and loads of card games based on our own suits and numbers (12 cards per suit, 6 suits, but not all suits are used for each game). Recently, a whole host of games have been added, from map-based games to worker placement, or anything.

Most Voxijans are bored by board games. Really the only ones people play are chess, cards, and mahjong (but they aren't really "board" games) and Settlers of Catan.
