Examples of your nation's language

Postby Finaora » Fri Nov 23, 2012 2:58 pm

Give us some examples of your nations language (and its name :P)

We have a few national languages (English, Gaelic, French and Scots) but I'll use Scots.

The Lairds Priyer (The Lord's Prayer).

Oor Faither wha air in Hivin,
Halla'd by tey name;
Tey kinrick vennir,
Tey wull ba done,
An earth as ut us in Hivin.
Gie us thus diy oor daily breid;
An forgie us oor intrudyins,
An forgie theim wha intrud us;
An dinny bring us intae temptation,
But delier us frae evil.

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

(King James Version)
1. And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

3. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

4. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

6. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

7. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

8. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

La Bible de Jérusalem Version

Purdik

Postby Purdisz » Fri Nov 23, 2012 5:54 pm

The national language of Purdisz is Purdik. It is akin to German, Hungarian, and has many similarities to Utretisch(Leijt Utrecht).
It is pronounced like German but has some differences:
SZ as in dz
IJ as in ay with a soft slide to eye, like Dutch ij
SH as in sh
There is a standard colloquial speech called "Sprijsz" that is usually only spoken. There are 5 Dialects:
-Rojtijn, spoken in the northern Region
-Koszpoten, Spoken in the Central Highlands
-Eindrigge, spoken in the east
-Tyieflen, spoken in the south
-Utrechtisch, spoken on borderlands of Leijt Utrecht

Example:
Excerpt from Magna Carta:

Adveniat regnum tuum.
Fiat voluntas tua,

The Lord's Prayer, or Notre Père

Han Chinese is the predominate language of the Republic of China, though several hundred are spoken across our many ethnic and cultural groups.
Hm...Yeah here. The National Anthem. Well; one of them anyway, the other one is more of a "Praise be to the Kuomintang." sort of thing.

Arise! All those who don't want to be slaves!
Let our flesh and blood forge our new Great Wall!
As the Chinese people have arrived at their most perilous time.
Every person is forced to expel his very last cry.

Technically, there is no *official* language here. However, most everyone speaks at least one of the high languages of French, Cherokee or Quenya, while anyone who could be referred to as educated will speak at least 2. For comparison's sake we'll use the lyrics to the Lord's Prayer only because it's readily available in all three languages and familiar to outsiders.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

Notre Père, qui es aux cieux,
Our Father, who is in the heavens
Que ton nom soit sanctifié,
May your name be sanctified
Que ton règne vienne,
May your reign come
May your will be done on the earth as in heaven
Give to us today our bread for this day
Pardonne-nous nos offences
Pardon us our offenses
As we also pardon those who have offended us
And do not submit us to temptation
mais délivre-nous du mal,
but deliver us from evil
For it is to you which belongs the reign
the power and the glory, for centuries of centuries
Amen.
Amen

Ogidoda galvladi hehi

Give to us this day our daily food
Digesgivsiquono desgidugvi nasgiya tsidigayotsineho tsotsidugi.
Forgive us our debts, the same as we forgive our debtors
Ale tlasdi udagoliyediyi gesv widisgiyatinvstanvgi

For your lordship is thine
Ale tsalinigidiyi gesvi.
and the power is
Ale etsalvguodiyu gesv nigohilvi.
and the glory is forever
Emenv
Amen

For completeness' sake - I waxed poetical rendering that back into English. The literal translation makes no grammatical sense.

Attolma i menelessie,
Our Father who is in heaven, be it that will be hallowed thy name.
nai airitainiéva esselya
Be it that thy kingdom will come
Nai írelya tyarniéva mardesse ve menelesse.
Be it that thy desire will be done on earth as in heaven
Anta men síre ilyaurea mastalma.
Give to us today daily our bread
Ar avanta men raikalmar ve avantalme raikatyarolmain
And forgive us our wrongs as we forgive our wrong-doers
Ar nai útukuvalye me mailenna
And be it that thou will not lead us into overmastering desire
ná fainu me ulkallo.
but release us from evil
Amen.
Amen

Or, a slightly more ancient version

Átaremma i ëa han ëa
na aire esselya
aranielya na tuluva
na care indómelya cemende tambe Erumande
ámen anta síra ilaurëa massamma
ar ámen apsene úcaremmar sív' emme apsenet tien i úcarer emmen
Álame tulya úsahtienna mal áme etelehta ulcullo
násie

The first is more modern, and would be used in a Christian Church, if such a thing existed in the Nine Realms. The later is using an earlier and more formalistic language.

OOC: The real reason for the difference is that the Ye Olde Quenya was written by Tolkien himself, while the "modern" version is a reconstruction using material Tolkien came up with after he wrote the prayer down.

The Khymas Zjelsje's national language is Khzayskje:

Nost, os nje Layana. Os noz?
/nost/, /os nʲe ɭaɪ'ana/. /os noz/?
Hello, my name is Layana. What is your name?

Oshj noz nje zjetj khzayskje ju'kj?
/oɕ noz nʲe zʲetʲ xzaɪ'skʲe ʝukʲ/?
Do you speak Khzayskje?

If you haven't a clue in regards to reading IPA, you can get away with pronouncing things more or less as you'd guess. <y> is close to the English "short" <i> sound. <j> typically indicates palatalisation, which you can take as pronouncing the preceding consonant more "softly". If <j> is at the start of a word, like in ja (two) or je (red), it is pronounced more like the English consonant <y> sound. <kh> is /x/, like the English <ch> in "yech".

The current romanization seen above (that is, transcribing the language in the Latin alphabet) sticks to matching pronunciation rather than mirroring the native orthography, with a few exceptions (like <sz> in kysz (city), which is just pronounced like a <z>).

For a longer example, see our national anthem, Tabuvj Khymas Zjelsje Na:

O Khymasu Zjelusje
Kadje dovoshj na kho
Sovo kazhyk na kovo
Ylu suvo kulu khzay povo
Sashj sy nje vak vatshj, kjelj nako’sj

O Khymasu Zjelusje

tabuvyt khova tje nyko

Oh our Nation of Zjelsje
Shining island in the sea
Broken free from tyranny
Forever and always your ideals shall surely be
Fight for the victory against each enemy

A people united by strength of mind and core
Our nation we love and our nation we adore
Could any state so perfectly suit us more?
Joining my fellows in a cause worth fighting for

Your people are loyal, for this is surely true
Like the sea, like a fox, we fight bravely through and through
Our hearts are unwavering in everything we do
Our minds solely set on the pride we hold for you

Oh our Nation of Zjelsje
Shining island in the sea
Across your land a peace shall be
As long as our nation remains sovereign and free
Singing together in this glorious symphony

or, the Zjelsjen children's poem that also resides in my sig (albeit Cyrillized):

zje shyb kuk na nje svu khje
kybukj atje nu tyk
kjelj'ka ko'shj shybut nje kyk!

A braggart thinks itself smart
and tries to hunt a cunning fox

Our Royal Anthem in German and Latin with English translation:

Take my hand, my Queen/Reich mir die hand, meine Königin/Regina da manum tuam

Crassioribus quam lucetis noctem levis vetustior
Percutiat te amor, non videre faciem pellem.
Obsecrare, et conspergo mens nostra, ostendens anima nostra aliud lumen;

Vultus in somnum tetigit cor nostrum ore niger.
Sine te nihil possumus.
Tolle manu mea, carissima reginam.

Numquam dimittet, cuiuscumque est sanguine vita tua;

Vos can interficiat nos quovis tempore, dilectus cecidit angelus.
Faciemus ultimo stent tibi iam soli sumus.

Mihi autem regina, una pariter arsura.
Tolle manu mea, mea Regina, simul vigilemus omnia ardent.

Sie bitten und heften unseres Geistes, zeigt unsere Seele ein anderes Licht;

You shine darker than the night, you are older than the light-
You're an invisible love to me, with no face or skin to see.
You entreat and baste our mind, showing our soul another light;
You seduce and desecrate what was once so cold and far away.
Take my hand, my Queen and together we will watch the world burn.

You appear in all our dreams, touched our black heart with your lips.
Without you, we are nothing.
Take my hand, dearest Queen.
The blood pours as rain to the realisation we're alone.

Take my hand, my queen and please stay by our side.
Help us face the night and we will burn to be your light.
Take my hand, my Queen, you, who guard the gates of hell
We will never let you go, our blood is the currency for your life!

You're born and created in the image of a Goddess
As the heavens burn and fall where no savior has been sent
No one to protect us, so alone we face the plight
With our mortal life that is brief,
You can kill us at any time, beloved fallen angel.
We will make our final stand, for you we are no longer alone.

Take my hand, my Queen, together we will burn together.
Take my hand, my Queen, together we watch everything burn.

The Punic language is based on Phoenician, with a little bit of Latin vocabulary thrown in.
The people of my nation are descended from the Carthaginians, cut off for centuries after the downfall of Carthage stranded their colonies in the Atlantic Macaronesian islands.
The language below is reconstructed from Phoenician vocabulary and grammar, with quite a bit of improvisation in the latter, although some prefixes and endings, along with the Verb-Subject-Object syntax, have been retained. For example, Phoenician kn'ny is equivalent to the Punic Kanany, meaning "a Punic person."
Below, š is pronounced as soft sh, w as (e.g. food), and as ts.
In truth, there was a dialect of Phoenician spoken in Carthage called Punic, but I know so little of it that I have instead based this language on the Levantine corpus instead.
In true Punic, Phoenician kn'ny is equivalent to Punic chanani.

Excerpt from "The Child's Story" (Yalad Nara)

Ken ba Ṣydwnit edamim Kananim w Imazigim.
Among the people of New Sidon are the Punics and Ehmazen.
[Are in Sidon's people Punics and Ehmazen.]

Beremiym Qart'hadiš, y'halek ba ayn'Tyeket Kananim w y'mir izram Imazigim hamat Alemut.
Sailing from Carthage, the Punics arrived in the Antioch Isles and saw the Ehmazen sacrificing to their God.
[Sailing from Carthage, arrived in islands(of)Teyek the Punics and saw sacrificing the Ehmazen to their God.]

Sid y'ken Kananim malhamiš, w y'bulš Imazigint ba manten.
But the Punics were fierce, and drove the Ehmazen into the hills.
[But were the Punics fierce, and drove the Ehmazen in the hills.]

Deu, y'miym adiyrit betit daletu dumeš.
For a long time, the doors of the great houses were wet with blood.
[For a long time, were wet the great house's doors by blood.]

Sid bošt qotilit reb šanot, dem y'calem Kananim w Imazigim.
But after many years of strife, the Punics and the Ehmazen finally made peace.
[But after strife's many eras, finally made peace the Punics and the Ehmazen.]

I'll use the two main languages and the english

Our native language, Tedofian, is a recognized regional language, although our national language is currently English.
Notable things include:
* τ / И is used for st sounds
* ϟ/Ϟ is used for sk sounds
* Verbs are conjugated depending on tense.
* Adjectives are left at the end of a noun.

Several translations of common phrases include:

The Teddy Bear Republic Empire: Der Lärsrepubländ Tedbärdi
Excuse Me: PlaϞ Ot
Hello! How are you?: Sverva! Ot Iτerot voτum?

Some words are also put together to form new ones, similar to German:
Tedcrosse = Иwegspra (Literally, stick sport)
Northern Beef Pasty = Fleklopazlol (Literally, dumpling bread)
My full name is actually "[The] Teddy Bear Republic Empire."

The unofficial anthem in different langauges:
German
In unserem kalten Land,
haben wir den Fürstens Hand,
unser Wegweiser.

Er wird uns beschützen,
nie wird er uns vergessen!
Seine große Majestät,
unser guter Fürst!

English
In our cold land
we have the Prince's hand,
to lead us forward.

He will protect us,
never forget us!
His Great Majesty,
our good Prince!

Example of Ancient Dremyrian from an ancient chant

In Dremyrian:
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, o' klah fonh sojar
Remsin undrie omryn plarson
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, o' klah fonh sojar
Ebenum undrei foh sah crikh
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, o' klah fonh sojar

In English:
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, you shall live forever
Fighting to the death against our greatest foes
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, you shall live forever
While ebony tides wash away the crimson blood
Trymsyr, Trymsyr, you shall live forever

This is just lifted from the Vūvask-hab factbook, but here is a translation of the KJB version of The Tower of Babel in Vuzantugian (Vūzan-tugj):

11:1 Āvoð kvajosavhj kȳlhj oð tugj, and oð sägj.

11:2 Äisk aþ, sā rīdask eþ nūt favhj, āvorhj fundub eþ gāð sað Senarask laz eð; and tarhj lebaþ eð.

11:4 Sagjidedub eþ, Gaþ, se-uts bef bȳdeþ vīsk kab and tȳrhj va, and tēkj ōrd ūpit sað emið; and se-uts bef dōþ vīsk nōb, älask veð begj kvajodavhj kȳlhj ūb.

11:5 Neterhj ejezg sa FÄRHJ sēhvað favoþ sað kab and tȳrhj va, kvajosk bäidið sa mäisk nōbv.

11:6 Sagjidedub FÄRHJ, Navhj, veð lödisk oð, and pekið eþ oð tugj; and fumäigjiþ dōð eþ keð: nū bef ävidask nemovhj ezg ab, nemovhj við sevanask dōð eþ.

11:7 Gaþ, neterhj se-uts ejēdub, and tarhj bef begið ērd tugj, sā ne bef lerub älask sägj.

11:8 Sā tar bagj sa FÄRHJ kvajosavhj kȳhjl ūb; and lebaþ kvajots vērub eþ.

The pronunciation can be found in the Vuzantugian section of the factbook, if you can read the IPA (though there are examples of the sounds being used in other languages).
