Space Travel

Postby Aruklia » Thu Nov 22, 2012 7:08 pm

More and More often the question of space travel arises. Does your country have a space program and how advanced is it?

The Aruklian space program is a massive one as we now control many solar systems and have sent robotic probes to many others.

Our space program is quite advanced, with some 14 satellites being launched from the TBRE and still active. We're part of the International Space Station program, although we haven't done any major missions to a foreign planetary body yet for reasons of funding.

Vloskovia's space program started in 1965, with the first launch occurring in 1968.

Vloskovia's first satellite, Ørzya-1, was launched on February 16, 1968, using a Szaflirov Sz-R57-2 rocket. The first manned spaceflight, codenamed Kotka-1, was launched on July 14, 1979, with a Szaflirov Sz-R60-1. The first Vloskovian in space was cosmonaut Eino Friedriksen. On August 30, 2012, the first launch of the experimental KLB KR-2 SSTO occurred. It was launched mid-air from a KLB KT-4-A1 carrier aircraft. The KR-2 will eventually be used to launch satellites, which have been using Sz-R60 variants as launch vehicles since 1980.

In most the Yamatai Star Empire, space travel is inexpensive and considered routine. Ships with faster-than-light drives are more common than those without them and interstellar post services are provided at little or no cost by the government. In spite of this, most of the Empire is relatively wild (read: low population on most worlds).

Interstellar space travel is about as common in the Imperium as intercontinental shipping in MT nations.

Space travel fills a similar role to sea travel in less advanced nations, our navy is space based and passenger ships are the only means of transport between the colonies, usually liners service the major colonies with mixed freighters providing transportation to smaller colonies.

Our 'postal' service uses the express boat network which is similar to the ancient earth pony express, when an express boat arrives at a starport it's cargo is sorted and all continuing cargo is placed on another Xboat and continues it's journey while the other Xboat sits at its mooring and waits for it's jump drive to cool down and recharge.

We pour a lot of funding into our space program. We're really proud of it, actually. Considering, though, that the United Moons are, well, two separate moons, not to mention all of the other lunar territories, we didn't really have a big choice.
After initial government-funded developments in space travel, the aerospace industry attracted a lot of corporate interest. We can travel very quickly through interstellar space, via our S.T.P.A.U.L. system as well as with the use of our advanced solar sails.
We do not currently have the ability to travel faster than the speed of light.
Occasionally, I may have to graphically describe the body parts and organs of aliens that do not even vaguely resemble those of any creature of this Earth. Try not to get too aroused.

In FT? Certainly. We just require wormholes to get there. In PFT we have such advanced interdimensional wormholes being used commercially, but in our standard tech level, (FT) they are not deployed to the general public yet. Mostly it is used by the science teams, but occasionally special divisions of the military will use it.

In summary, we DO happen to have it.
