Your People's Accent

Postby The Multiversal Species Alliance » Fri Oct 26, 2012 8:51 pm

What does your people's accent sound like, you can't say they don't have one because everyone does even if they don't think they do, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accent_(linguistics)? How do they pronounce certain words?
Accents vary widely, but most males sound like the stallion in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haWnvGDiUck
Most females sound like the blonde, orange mare in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WPiatO3 ... re=related
Words that end in "ing" instead end with an "n", for example, instead of "yelling", it would be, "yellin' ", however it would be spelled "yelling" when it's written down. Another example is "your", it becomes, "yer", but would stay "your" when written down.

Relorians say most words in Relorian. There are a large number or regional accents that most outsiders might not be able to notice. When speaking English, their accent sounds similar to the Spanish accent, crossed mildly with a Russian accent. Relorian is a highly rhotic language, and results in a highly rhotic accent.

Pagian English has light r sounds and comes out rather smooth without a whole lot of changes in intonation. The "w" is pronounced very subtly, so for example the word "where" sounds more like "air", but it's not non-existent, it's just very soft. Our speech is often rhythmic and steady, and faster than usuaul speech is usually associated with anger, whereas slow speech can either be attributed to awkwardness or sarcasm.

Generally, most Saurisians speak with a generally American accent, though some Saurians speak with the traditional accents, either an accent that is a mix of Italian and American or an accent that sounds like this (except they're not shouting, obviously). In addition, there are many different regional accents that exist in Saurisia (Southern, Texan, Cajun, New York, New Jersey, Bostonian, New England, etc.) with German, English, Russian, Italian, Slavic, and Gallic accents also being common.

Then, there are the other species-specific accents, such as the Drakonian accent which typically sounds like this, this, or this. Of course, the more 'Saurisified' Drakonianss also speak with American, English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, German, or Russian accents. The Khalkan accent is rather exotic in tone, with a lot of rolling the tongue and hissing. The Dwarves generally speak with a deep-voiced Scottish, Welsh, or Irish accent. The Sslurids' accent sounds a bit like a London accent with a lot of hissing. There's a lot of others, but that's it.

In regards to an English accent, it's difficult to say with much accuracy as technically no Khzayk speak English or interact with English speaking countries. However, based solely on phonology, I would guess something a bit Slavic, though the intonation may seem a bit North Germanic at times. There are some notable features likely to crop up in a developing accent, like the only liquid being [l`] (X-SAMPA), [j\] being typically substituted for [j] (particularly by mainland Zjelsen speakers) and the English <f> sound replaced by [v\]. This still leaves a lot of room for guessing, like whether or not English <w> is also replaced by [v\], Khzayskje does have a closer sound, but it only appears in certain glides and isn't really considered a phoneme by the native speakers.

As touched upon in the above, there are slightly varying accents even within the Khzay, mostly between the main island and the more outlying populated islands, though the long standing national education standards have smoothed over many of the biggest distinctions. Most notably with [j] and [j\], [i] and [1], devoicing on "weak" vowels, and palatalisation. Non-native speakers tend not to notice these variances much though.

People living in the north such as the Lumminent Spur tend to carry somewhat of an Irish/Scottish accent; in the southern and inland areas generally people speak with a traditional American accent.

The Empire spans some seventy star systems spread across a globe roughly 120 lightyears in diameter, most of them settled by slowboat, from every region of Terra, and practically isolated from the motherworld and from other colonies for centuries before FTL travel and communications allowed regular contact to be re-established.

Which accent?

For that matter, which language? Imperial English is standard, but far from the only one spoken, and on many colony worlds even the native dialect of English is barely recognizable as such.
Even in Antiquity, all the good names were already taken.

Most citizens tend to speak English with a Japanese accent.

Civire normally have an almost "east coast" US accent when speaking English, but still have a hard time with their Ls and Rs.

Postby The Kangaroo Republic » Sat Oct 27, 2012 6:27 am

The Federation of the Kangaroo Republic has two official national languages: Kangan, and English. Both languages share the same roots with Old English, though Kangan usually has been a much more conservative language in its development than Modern English, and has preserved many of its indigenous words and old spelling. Many English speakers in the Kangaroo Republic speak with a Macropodine English dialect, which has preserved many of the sounds as they were before the great vowel shift and may often be very difficult to interpret for speakers of other dialects.

There is an ongoing language strife in the Kangaroo Republic, as the old Kangan dialect and language fall under threat to Modern English speakers. Employers often require people to speak with discernible accents, and do not tend to favour speakers of the Kangan dialect. Thus, many speakers have adopted Australian, New Zealander, or Welsh accents, leading to the Macropodine language and dialect to be pushed into the periphery. While conservatives fiercely oppose it as discrimination of their traditional dialect, other people claim the policies to be progressive and advantageous for the position of the FKR on an international scale. The amount of young Kangan speakers continues to drop steadily, and surveys of 20-year old Macropodines show a steady decrease from 77% speakers of the Kangan language in 2000, to just 60% by 2012.

Below you will find a pronounciation guide for Macropodine English.

A general Arabic or Italian accent, with a few other notes. One characteristic is that "t" and "d" are pronounced as dental, rather than alveolar, plosives [the English approximation being that they sound halfway like a "th" sound].

Most people in CL speak with an Irish accent, with some Estuary English pronounciations.
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

In Kakostan, we speak Kakostanian, a Slavic language that stems from Russian and Ukrainian. When we speak English, a language that was taught to everyone in school to make Kakostan multilingual, we speak with a Russian accent. Also, in English, we may sometimes forget to use the word "the". Example: "Please pass the salt" How we would say it: "Please pass salt" As for some pronunciation , take the word "Capitalism" for instance, we would say it like "Capitulism"

Also, there are certain words in our language that.... may sound like something else in another...
