Esoteric Religions in your Nation

Postby The De Danann Nation » Mon Sep 10, 2012 12:48 pm

How are esoteric religions(like Wicca,Thelema, and other occult philosophies)viewed in your nation? Are they treated like superstition, contempt,or are people more open-minded?
De Dana is an island nation off the coast of Asia settled by Celts around 100 B.C. and containing a mix of Eurasian culture.

In the days of the Matriarchy, following Esoteric religions was extremely frowned upon. Wiccans were a particular problem. With the rise of Communism, all people found guilty of worshiping Esoteric gods are executed.

Such religions are almost always allowed, and we recognize that many have some truth(s) that our culture also embraces. But the actual worship of such religions is minimal, and doing so usually looks slightly insane to others.

If the cult of Alphonse is considered a religion, it's probably the most popular one in Fatatatutti.

We see these religions as suspicious and weird, but we still try to respect it and be open- minded about it.

It's entirely banned, like all non-Christian religions. Works promoting these religions are banned, and those found guilty of preaching them are sentenced to a minimum of 7 years in prison.

Oh, so THAT'S what they call filthy pagans now...

Actually practicing witchcraft/sorcery/magic (be it black magic or white magic) is punishable by eighty years in prison. Naturall, all faiths that encourage its users to engage in magic are banned.

(Five categories of faiths are illegal: Satanism, Scientology, "parody religions", Ponyism, and sorcery. This "Forbidden Five" list sometimes drops sorcery and adds "Pastafarianism", but Pastafarianism is a parody religion.)

(Any other faith is either both tax exempt and legal, or taxed but legal.)

The problem with these witchcraft religions is that they aren't religions. They're simply reinterpretations of Unicorn magic in our nation. There are Wicca schools for Unicorns but they're regulated to make sure younger teenage Unicorns aren't learning how to summon evil spirits.

It depends on what the esotericism is about.

If it is about something supernatural, and not taken as merely symbolic of something natural, then it is regarded as a superstition and such believers are viewed with pity.

However, we have a religion (called Epicureanism) in which there are esoteric orders of people who have come to some sort of naturalistic enlightenment about the human condition. Those people are viewed with great respect.

The only exception might be the Cthulhu Cultists, whose vision of the ultimate helplessness and insignificance of the human race is regarded as a betrayal of humanity.

By the government or the people?

The Government is Secular and has no opinion on any religious denomination from the Catholic Majority to the Native American religious minority; it's not their business who or what people worship.

On the popular level they're viewed depending on the individual.

Unpopular, to say the least. Such religions are seen as superstitious nonsense where they exist at all.

Those kinds of practices are quite honored, in fact, being the majority of religion here. You probably wouldn't want to refer to them as "esoteric" though, considering those who practice them consider them just as legitimate as a religion like Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. In fact, it is those faiths that might be considered on the, "esoteric" side, though we'd still view them with acceptance and an open heart.

We'll adopt part of your system. We'll force these religions to pay taxes and make Scientology illegal.

After reading this, my brother suggested we make Hastur's Cultists an exception to the above system. They are not monotheistic, but they'll be fully tolerated.

Cult is not a dirty word within the Sanian thought. Cult worship by itself is merely the focused veneration of certain powers or principles, which deviates from the polytheism practiced by most Sanians. While most Sanians worship many spirits that have some influence over their lives, those following a cult focus on specific spirits, or specific philosophical codes, which act as their source of divine inspiration and guidance. Cults offer examples of a more focused religious experience, and often tend to incorporate or pay respects to the standard polytheism as well. Thus multiple Cults of a relatively begin nature exist all throughout Sani. Though Cults that endanger the lives of their followers or partake in particularly vile portions of the dark arts, i.e Necromancy. Are hunted by the state with extreme prejudice.

Considering Christianity only accounts for about 30% of religion in Emperica, and that roughly 60% of the religion here is a 4000 year old pagan polytheist one, people are pretty open minded.

You're welcome to practice nearly any religion so long as it does not involve human or animal sacrifices and does not preach an especially hateful text.

All religions are here. In fact, our official religion, the Pirate Faith, is considered esoteric by the commoners.
Kedri is a nation of 18th century pirates who know water-bending. Throw in some steampunk, as well. Tech level is PT/FanT.
Kedrians abandon piracy and become a modernized country, founded by reformed criminals who forsook piracy and the citizens are descended from pirates, and still retain some of their heritage such as speech, accent, politics.
