First Regional Assembly Elections in Callisto [VOTE]

Postby Jovian Islands » Mon Jul 30, 2012 5:09 pm

The first Regional Assembly Elections in Callisto, one of the Jovian Islands, is happening right now. Two mayor parties and two large coalitions of minor parties are the main political forces aiming to obtain some of the 17 seats of the Regional Assembly. Every party is controlled by a different NationStates player. Vote for your favorite party or coalition.

The following are the options in the ballot:

A. ASSOCIATED PARTY OF LABOUR
ame of the Party: Associated Party of Labour (APL)
Party Colour(s): orange (#F16F33)
Party Leader: Evangelos Ipparion
Evangelos Ipparion is a resident of Callisto in the Jovian Islands. A Jovian émigré from Camelovia, he has gained renown for his groundbreaking medical achievements worldwide as a doctor, and his years of medical service at local not-for-profit charity organisations. he has been persuaded to seek the political life to better represent the lower classes of Jovian society.
Where is the party strongest?: Callisto
Party Platform
Opinions on Democracy and Political Rights
• All races deserve the same rights, freedoms and responsibilities.
• The only legitimate government is a democratic government.
• Citizens should have the right to freely criticise government policies to bring constructive change.
• To ban outright extremist parties, as well as parties that promote violence or social unrest. By removing violent fringe groups from the election table, we believe that Jovians can move forward in a united, and peaceful, manner. (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=192793)
Opinions on Economy
• Private property is good.
• The government should regulate natural resources and international companies more.
• Citizens should have economic rights to a basic standard of living: food, shelter, etc.
• Workers should enjoy a certain degree of liberty and rights, as long as they fulfill their responsibilities.
• Generally, taxes make life worse. However, the rich should be taxed more than the poor.
Opinions on Social Issues and Civil Rights
• All creeds and beliefs should be accommodated, but the government should be secular.
• The right of bodily sovereignty trumps the right of the fetus; in other words, legalise abortion.
• The government should regulate drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and guns more carefully.
• Citizens should enjoy fundamental civil rights that should not be taken, even in times of war.

B. JOVIAN SOCIALIST PARTY
- Party Name (and abbreviation if it has one): Jovian Socialist Party (JSP)
- Party Colors (max. two colors): navy blue and silver?
- Party Leader (optional): -- (don't feel like I have enough information on typical Jovian names to name him/her, but he/she should be at least thirty years of age, unmarried and childless, born and raised above the poverty line, and have a large amount of military experience.)
- Island where the party is stronger (Io, Europa, Ganymede or Callisto):callisto

- Opinions on democracy and political rights: the official party position is that democracy is only effective at the local level at best, and that all positions above local town mayors should be appointed instead of elected. government should be run be a single unelected leader, (their party leader) and this leader would appoint all other government officials above town leaders. this leader would also directly appoint their successor. the party does, however, support an elected cabinet of advisers to the leader, who would have no official political power but would ensure that the wants of the people at least get heard.
the party's position of political rights in general leans towards against. the people should be able to have their views heard, but those views shouldn't directly affect policy.

- Opinions on economy: the party's official position is technically mixed-market, but very heavily leaning on the socialist side. large industries devoted to resource-gathering and manufacturing should be owned and managed by the state, and all areas of business should be more heavily regulated. the state would be easily the largest employer, owning at least half of all primary and secondary industries, however the government would only regulate service industries instead of actually taking part in them. the creation of jobs in foreign nations would also be heavily regulated and near prohibited. a minimum wage would be established, and set according to living standards, the party firmly believes that anyone working full-time should be able to live off of it. areas such as education and the police force would be completely under government control, up to and including college level for education. the party does also advocate for higher taxes to pay for this.

- Opinions on social issues and civil rights: the party and its members tend to be rather conservative with social issues, with the noticeable exception of homosexuality. homosexuals would be given the same status as heterosexuals, as would those who are transgendered or that do not identify with a defined gender. abortion would be made illegal unless the mother's life was in severe danger, and immigration would be discouraged for all but skilled individuals. immigrants found within the nation illegally would be immediately deported unless underage and without living relatives.
one of the party's major goals would be to achieve higher funding and standard for police forces, as well as increasing the overall number of policemen in the nation, to help deter crime of any type. law courts and prisons would also be given more funding, to ensure the proper holding and punishment of criminals. achieving higher funding for the military is also another of the party's goals, as well as upping enlistment, and the party would attempt to establish benefits to those with military affiliation.

- The renaming of Ganymedes, with its pederastic and homosexual connotations, to the less licientious St. Peter's Island.
- To open an ecumenical forum within the newly Christened St. Peter's Island for the reconciliation of all Church within the Jovian Island, with the common goal of peace, of the propogation of Christian morality and the teaching of Jesus Christ, our Messiah, and to create greater economic equality and destroy poverty.

Party Colours:

Red and Yellow

Party Leader

Citizen X.

Island where party is strongest-

Europa

Positions:

Democracy- The Jovian Communist Party believes that the current Capitalist Democracy, which is a dictatorship of the bourgeois, must be replaced by a true, DIRECT democracy, which place the power firmly in the hand of the people, the majority of whom are proletarians and workers.

Civil and Political Freedom- The Jovian Communist Party rejects the idea that the rights of any citizen should be abridged for whatever reason, so long as he does not intrude upon the liberty of others. As such, we advocate greater degrees of political freedom, the extention of the right to vote to those of fifteen years of age, that all parties and people running for office should be given equal time on all media by state law to express their opinions that everyone may understand their position, and that this should be regulated to what the candidate stands for and not the faults of the other candidate, and we affirm the sacred liberty of every individual without hinderance and without hindering.

Economy- We believes that a Socialist Model, founded upon the ideas of Marx, Luxembourg, and other Marxist Economic theorists, to be the most fair and equal system. We believe in the abolition of the Capitalist system, the rejection of 'state socialism', which is merely state capitalism, and the ownership of the capital and the means of production to the worker, that the worker manage their factory by themselves, rather than ordered around and used as tools and slaves.

6. NATIONAL REPUBLICAN PARTY OF THE JOVIAN ISLANDS
National Republican Party of the Jovian Islands (NRP)
- Party Color(s): Dark Blue
- Party Leader: William Munro
- Island where the party is stronger: Europa
- Opinions on democracy and political rights The National Republican Party believes in a representative democracy, and supports political rights for all citizens above the age of 18. The NRP is supportive of increasing voting rights for minorities, as well as ending any major form of censorship, whether or not they are minor.
- Opinions on economy: The National Republican Party believes in a mixed form of the free-market, with some socialist aspects. While the party supports the idea of free enterprise, the party believes that all citizens should receive equal opportunity when creating businesses. The party also supports establishing a Living Wage, which is similar to a Minimum Wage, but it corresponds to supporting a wage that can allow one to afford the basic commodities of life.
- Opinions on social issues and civil rights: The NRP is supportive of same-sex marriage and early term abortions, and is in favor of integrating any minority into the Jovian Islands and her society. The Party supports the rights of all citizens to have equal rights in voting, free speech, press, etc...

- Mayor Ideologies: The Leftist Coalition doesn't have an official ideology, but rather it is formed by many parties from the far-left and center-left, and even some that would be associated more with the center-right, in opposition to both the mayor left-wing parties and the Rightist Coalition which is closer to the radical right wing.

Vote for your favorite party/coalition.

NOTE: There was a mistake in the parties of the leftist coalition. When the post was edited, only 2 votes were cast, both for the Rightist Coalition.

OFFICIAL MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATED PARTY OF LABOUR

To all affected by the recent goings-on in the Jovian Islands,

With a clear, 60%-lead in the polls in the first hour, it is clear that the majority of NationStates players support the actions of the Associated Party of Labour. As the only party in this election which stands for centrist and humanist beliefs that rights should be enjoyed by all, that all are entitled to fair play and fair wages, and that wars and taxes only benefit the rich, the APL is endorsed by thousands, if not millions, of Callistonians.

Furthermore, myself - and the rest of the APL - have worked over-time, in stressful conditions, to return the Jovian Islands to their former glory after the fiasco caused by the armed rebels under the Jovian Ultra-Nationalist Party, which shames our nation by running in this election, and the Tory Party, which supports their violence and wanton disregard for the sanctity of property and lives.

We promise that, should we be elected to the Callistonian Regional Council, we will not stop until the roots of extremism, and their backlash, are weeded out. Other parties in this election will tell you that these deaths do not matter, that the markets are better when a few with the money and the power can oppress all. Well, see what really happened from those who touted such beliefs - death and destruction, poverty and the disease of war. They will say, a million deaths are merely a statistic - we of APL believe that each and every life lost must be repaid for in the hard, transparent work of the government - a government of the people, for the people, by the people.

Save Jovia today. Vote APL.

Ever a servant of the people of Jovia,

Evangelos Ipparion
Leader of the Associated Party of Labour (APL)

Ok, I thought it was suspicious that so many nations voted for you in the first minutes, but that can happen. Sorry for suspecting.

The Rightist Coalition is not, as stated, a loose coalition of various right wing forces, with sever authoritarian and fascist tendencies, we have outline our united beliefs as a coalition already, and our beliefs are as follows:

1. The Rightist Coalition believes in minimal government intervention in the Free Market. We believe that this is the best economic model, and one that leads to the greater overall prosperity.

2. The Rightist Coalition believe in the democratic government.

3. To prevent the abuse of power from our democratically elected central government, the Rightist Coalition also favours a degree of autonomy within the four islands, as a safe guard against possible government corruption.

4. The Rightist Coalition does not believe in higher taxes for those who, by their industry, are made wealthy, but, to the contrary, propose a flat tax rate across the board, with various allowances and exceptions.

5. The Rightist Coalition believes that certain life choices, while not condemmed, should not be encouraged. To this end the Rightist Coalition is against homosexual sodomy, abortion, and other forms of immorality so widespread in this present age and contrary to Jovian values.

6.The Rightist Coalition, seeing the danger this democracy face by the various tyrants outside, and by the terrorist within, proposes to strenghten our military and our policing.

7. The Rightist Coalition is firmly against any abridgment to the right guarenteed to all citizens. As such, we are opposed to APL's proposal to outlaw certain parties on account of extremism, and therefore support the existence of all party, regardless of ideology, should not be banned, but individual members who have ordered or performed terrorist actions should be arrested.

8. The need of the Jovian Islands should be foremost.

We request that, for all following election documents, our coalition should be represented with our shared views, rather than with the views of each coaltion member individually.

Ever a servant of the people of Jovia,

Evangelos Ipparion
Leader of the Associated Party of Labour (APL)

The European Bull 30.07.2012

The Tory Party will address several allegations made against it by the Associated Labour Party. First, the Associated Labour Party alledges that the Tory Pary supports 'violence and disregard for human life'. The Tory Party, however, argues to the contrary, that it respect the sanctity of human life far more than the APL, which has no qualms of dipping their flag in the blood of the martryed dead to further their political goals, and justify their oppression, that is, restricting the right of all citizen to freely assemble under the vague cover of what it calls extremism. Does the APL really believe in Democracy if it doesn't want several parties that it may find disagreeable, and the public in general find disagreeable, to participate? A democracy should allow all views to flourish, to put forth their views, and to allow the voters to decide. Should our sons and daughters die to see the totalitarian policies of those combatants instated by the supposedly 'enlightened' party? ON the Contrary, the Tory Party believes in democracy, what our sons and daughters died for, which is why we asked that the individuals responsible be tried, and not the entire party. THe APL forgets that the Tory Party offers the entirety of its supplies for the victims use, our party buildings have been converted to temporary houses for those who are made homeless whatever we have of use has been distributed to the victims, even our Party Leader offer his home to complete strangers and victims of the recent conflict. It is pathetic that, in spite of all our effort, we are somehow lumped together with the terrorist. We advise that the APL be more honest about the labours of others, where others would not doubt the hard work done by the APL to help the Jovian Islands.

Seconly, the Tory Party is finds their economic policies populist at best, and harmful to the Jovian Economy and Jovian People as a whole. By restricting the 'Rich' (some vague boogeyman of the APL, which they have yet to properly define), they are hurting the Jovian Economy. These people create the jobs for the people, generate the wealth, if you place a burden on them, or make them uncompetative, their will either fail, losing millions of Jovians their job, or they will leave to more hospitable grounds for business. The Tory Party, and the Rightist Coalition, proposes, instead, to offer minimal regulation on all business, offer government subsidies and loans to entrepreneurs trying to start a business, give tax breaks to the rich to encourage them to invest in the Jovian Economy, and to impose tariff upon foriegn goods to protect Jovian Companies. This way, we believe that the Economy of the Jovian Islands would not only prosper, but would also lead to the general prosperity of the people, not found in the APL's nannying.

Finally, the Tory Party would like to say that despite the APL's smear campaign, we believe that the Jovian People would see the truth in our statement, and would vote for the party that has the interest of the Jovian People at heart, rather than petty populists and demogogues. We believe that once opened to the reality of the APL's authoritarianism, their facade of moderation would melt before the eyes of the people, as an ice wall in the desert sun's heat, and they will see that the better choice would be those who have the People's interest and democracy at heart, our opponets to the left, who, we do not doubt, are lovers of democracy and sincere, even if their economic and their social policies are contrary to our own, or us, the Rightist coalition. The Tory Party has faith in the wisdom of the Jovian People, and hope that the APL, if they really are sincere about this whole 'ban extremism' thing, would revoke such policies that are clearly incompatible with democracy.

Nouvelle-Albion wrote:The Rightist Coalition is not, as stated, a loose coalition of various right wing forces, with sever authoritarian and fascist tendencies, we have outline our united beliefs as a coalition already, and our beliefs are as follows:

Request Accepted.

I believe since the issues were not discussed by the coalition, parties are free to take their own decisions on them.

\THe Tory Party, whilst it does not speak for the Rightist Coalition, believes that drugs are harmful to the individual as well as society, and that the government, which should have the need of the Jovian people foremost, should make it illegal for the people's sake. The Tory Party also believes that Secularism is, in itself, not bad, but we oppose too much Secularism within the government. We distinguish between the seperation of the State and any religious institution, which we call Secularism, and the idea that religion should totally be excised from the Government, which we call Laïcité, that is, while we believe that the Church should not support any religion, and Religion should not control the state, we also believe that not only should politicians and political servants be able to express their religion openly in context of their work, but that their religious conviction should, in fact, drive them, and inspire their actions.

We encourage the voters to switch their support to the rightist coalition as the leftist parties do not have the Jovian islands best interest at heart.

While we respectfully disagree with our collegues, the Jovian Ultra-Nationalist Party, on their estimation of the loyalty, sincerity, and devotion to the Jovian People of our Leftist Collegues, or the degree in which the TCP represent the views of all Leftist, the Tory Party (Now the Freedom Party), would also like to encourage all undecided Callistian Voters to vote for the Rightist Coalition.

First, the Rightist Coalition is the most organised opposition to the APL and their assualt on Democracy. The APL believes that they should be able to 'ban outright extremist parties, as well as parties that promote violence or social unrest', which would harm parties within both coalition. The word 'extremist' is vague and relative, as is the word 'promote violence or social unrest'; is it the position of the APL to decide which party is too so extreme, that the Jovian Public has no choice in whether they would like to vote for those 'extremist' parties or not? Is that really a democracy? If that is democracy, then, there is little seperating it from an authoritarian state, for what they are, in effect, doing is suppressing people of different ideology and denying them the right to assemble or protest, lest they mark them off as 'extreme' or 'promoting social unrest'. While this grave danger to Jovian Democracy is passed forth as 'moderation', the Rightist Coalition has opposed it and criticized it since its conception. The APL also cannot allege that the Rightist Coalition put nothing in place of their proposal to protect the citizen of this nation from domestic terrorism or to bring the prepetrators to justice, the Rightist Coalition, on the contrary, offer a fairer and more democratic proposal, to try those involve without resorting to authoritarian measures, and to strenghten our police.

Secondly, the Rightist Coalition has offer a far more comprehensive plan to help built up the Jovian Economy than either our collegues to the left, or the APL. Instead of promising to give this mysterious boogeyman, the Rich, higher taxes and hoping that that would bring forth miracles, the Rightist Coalition propose minimal government regulation, subsidies and loans to help prop up starting businesses, tariffs against foriegn goods to protect domestic products, a flat tax, and incentives for the Rich to invest in the Jovian nation. This would, in turn, produce wealth all across the board, albeit unevenly, but would result in better standard of living of all. Our Leftist collegues, on the otherhand, offer only common misery and poverty, and government nannying, encouragment of idlenes, etc.

Finally, the Rightist Coalition is the only party which has offered any safe guards against a too strong and too powerful central government that is liable to corruption, with checks in the form of local government. The needs of the Jovian People and the Jovian Islands comes foremost to the Rightist Coalition, we are the only one which offers a comprehensive plan which protects the people from a too strong central government, divorced from the needs of the local islands.

Jovian Ultra-Nationalist Party would also like to draw attention to the actions of several leftist parties during the Orson Conflict which directly lead to the deaths of thousands of Jovian Civilians and the near destruction of the Jovian Government. We reference the Jovian Accords Act for proof. As well as the valiant actions of the JUNP during the conflict which directly ensured that the Jovian government survived the ordeal and guaranteed the free elections that we are having today.

Didn't the UDSF let people into there HQ and arm themselves to protect the people. And afterwards hand out food, water, and blankets to people?

Democracy is a disgusting and perverse form of government, which must be put down before it ruins itself, and eats upon the people of the Nation. Dear Leader Generalissimo Rhian ap Rhys, understand that various parties are all pathetically trying to preserve their democracy from its inevitable self-destruction, supports the JOVIAN SOCIALIST PARTY, which offer a more sensible plan to rule this nation. We disagree, however, on their policy of 'democracy at a local level', and beg them to reconsider allowing the οἱ πολλοί into the government at all. Democracy has been shown to always fail, the great wisdom of the ancient Greeks, who, in their rare moment of folly, tried it in Athens, only to have it fail (as shown by their own great Historian, Thucycides), has proved, incontestibly, that it is the worse form of government ever devised. We advise that, instead, the JOVIAN SOCIALIST PARTY offer a kinder government, ruled by the οἱ ὀλίγοι, the enlightened few, the only few capable of ruling your nation without worry or demogoguery.
