The city of Alsten is Nohn's largest city, with a population of 3.1 million, climbing to 5.8 million when one counts the satellite cities of Khem and Adem, and includes the majority of Nohn's human inhabitants. It towers above the east side of the Bay of Nohn (Iluvamez Nohnifdhen in Sythen) with the main bulk of city located on top of the Alsten Escarpment, roughly 80 metres above sea level and the city's bustling port.

Alsten was founded 450 years ago at the end of the Sythen renaissance to be the capital of the new co-operative government. The Isle of Nohn - located at the centre of the Great Circle shipping route - was a natural, neutral choice between the fractious governments and clans of the day. As such, Alsten was developed as a political centre, and not a natural city, with little concern given to making the city economically viable, and industries other than those needed to support the sprawling global bureaucracy were ignored.

Despite the city's impressive skyline, a majority of it's skyscrapers stand abandoned and unused since the mysterious Event 30 years ago which brought Nohn to Earth from the sythen homeworld of Cirundi. Approximately 80% of the city's population simply vanished, without any rhyme or reason, leaving entire city blocks and thoroughfares deserted. Even with the influx of human immigrants to the city - as promoted by the Protectorate Government - Alsten can easily hold nearly five times it's current population without needing any major construction beyond interior renovations to increase rooms and corridors to a size more comfortable for humans. Many stations on the city's automated metro see only a handful of passengers a day, and outside of the city's main districts along the coast and highways the towers stand eerily dark and quiet.

Despite the best efforts of the Protectorate's military, Alsten remains a major smuggling hub, as it's many empty districts allow small gangs to claim large swaths of territory. Alsten is primarily used by these gangs for storage and warehousing, as the populace of Nohn is not large enough to be a major import market - though there is a substantial market of those selling recovered sythen technologies from the deserted towers to the rest of the world for a healthy sum. As this undermines the Protectorate's own legitimate sale of recovered technology, the Council delligates a significant portion of it's military to cleaning out said smuggling operations. However, Alsten is just too big, and despite the repeated military clashes with gangs, all the government seems to be doing is promoting the migration of human immigrants to other cities in the Alstan Protectorate such as Hirest, Aetheth and Sakiim.
