The capital city of Eidenn is Amaurot. Why? Because Eidenn's creator is a somewhat-pretentious Philosopher-King. (Or in the common parlance, 'lit-whore.')

That said, Amaurot is the main city in Plato's Utopia, which inspired the name of Eidenn itself (Eidenn = Eden = Paradise = Utopia) and which roughly means 'a shadowy/unknown place.' It's vaguely ironic, since Eidenn is such a bright, cheerful place... or is it? *dun dun DUNNNNN!*

In-character, Amaurot is said to have been named by its founder after one of the first generation of escapees who would eventually found the entire nation. Amaurot, if the legends are true, was a man born into captivity, his body covered with thick scars from the cruel treatment of his masters, until it was difficult to tell that he had even been born as a Man.

Naturally, he took the first chance he could to escape, and his selfish nature - shaped by a life of sharp-edges and self-interest - caused him to strike out on his own. However, in his rashness, he fled from the city he'd been raised in and became lost in the wildlands, deep in the territory of his enemies. He wandered the wilderness until he nearly died of exhaustion, before he was rescued by a traveling part of fellow escapees who had waited behind while Amaurot fled to rescue others like them.

The event changed Amaurot's life; while he was, of course, still concerned with his own life, the circumstances of what had happened brought about a new point of view, and ever after was he the fiercest defender of the traveling refugees.

Amaurot died of both wounds and old age before he ever saw the land that would come to bear his name, and none now know where his bones lie, but the capital city stands in shining glass and plasteel and a testament to the depths and heights a single life can reach.
