Since the formation of Everyton, its heart has been Durban - the greatest city in this great Permanent Autonomous Zone. Durban represents the Bohemian aspect of the people that is such an important part of Everytonian national identity, the arts - painting, poetry, literature, film-making, sculpture, etc - are well represented here. Every year in December, the Durban Arts Festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world - making it the largest such festival on earth. It also includes the Durban Film Festival, the most prestigious such festival in the region.

The nation's tradition of free expression is also easily viewed here, and at the city's numerous speaker's corners, people of every political, economic, religious and social stripe can be seen arguing their views, and being heckled by sceptics. Everyton is also famed for its cosmopolitanism, and in Durban one can see people from every corner of the globe going about their business day in and day out - it's a people-watcher's paradise. This cosmopolitanism is, of course, aided by the vast number of Anarchists from all over the world who have made this city their home - many after fleeing repressive fascist régimes.

The city is also the centre of the people's economic life - with most of the people's National Producer's and Consumer's Councils headquartered here. Of course, being the location of the National People's Council - the highest political council in Everyton - Durban is also the closest thing to a capital city that Everyton has.

Durban is a surfer's mecca, and every year the Durban August Surfing Festival (obviously held in August) attracts thousands of surfers from around the world, attracted to the perfect surfing conditions at that time of year. To protect the surfers and swimmers, shark nets out at sea are positioned one kilometer from the beach all year round. Another annual event is the "Sardine Run", an annual migration of sardines from the Atlantic to the equator which runs along the whole of the east coast of Southern Africa in June and July - and since the migration runs close enough to the shore for people to wade out to reach it, hundreds of people gather along the beaches throughout the run to catch some for the frying pans: fish is the only general exception to the nation's cultural vegetarianism.
