Xerconia is the capital city of the Radiatian Federation.

The Federal Capital Territory has an approximate population of 6,800,000, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the Radiatian Federation. Although no longer a state, if it was it would be the 9th largest in terms of population, but the smallest in terms of land area.

Although much of the architecture is designed to give a more historical appearance, Xerconia is actually the second newest major city in Radiatia, with nothing in the city over 100 years old.

In LAI 947 the Liberation Army declared Xerconia the capital of the Radiatian People’s Socialist Union, and it became the 43rd state of the RPSU.

After the fall of the RPSU the Federal Capital was moved to Radii, and the city became part of the state of Detzertscha, until it became the Federal Capital Territory once again, although rather than acting as a separate state, Xerconia is almost directly controlled by the Federal Government.

The city is famous for its innovative technology, such as the Overland Skytrains, and the waterworks which tries to keep the extremely dry desert irrigated and hydrated.

Xerconia hosted the Noctur Summer Olympics in LET 11.

Although the government is one of the largest employers in the city, there is also a huge industry in tourism, manufacturing, aircraft building, science and technology and adult entertainment.

The Xerconian dialect of Radiatian is the official language of the Radiatian Federation.

Xerconia currently has the lowest unemployment rate in the Radiatian Federation.

Xerconia castle is the oldest building in Xerconia, which was built in around LAI 920 by a mad billionaire, who after building it disappeared into the desert never to be seen again.

Much of the architecture in Federation City (Formerly Union City) and central Xerconia is designed to look older than it is, but very few things in the city are over 100 years old.

In the first Radiatian Civil War, the Liberation Army used Xerconia castle as a base, and built Union City around it. It was a useful outpost as the castle was well equipped but its location was deep in the desert and therefore isolated and difficult to penetrate.

In LAI 947, the victorious Liberation Army declared Union City the capital city of the Radiatian People’s Socialist Union, although as the city grew and expanded it changed its name to Xerconia, after the castle.

Xerconia was proclaimed the 43rd state of the RPSU and given a perfectly square land mass of 2,280 km sq to expand into. While it was at the time the physically smallest state, it had a population of over 6 million people and any overseas Radiatians were considered for statistical purposes residents of that state. Its population was and is considerably larger than many northern states.

During the Isthmus war there was a small amount of violence in Xerconia. The Rivenkans attempted to bomb the city, however most of their planes were shot down. However by being shot down over the city, they still caused a lot of destruction, and it made very little difference.

There were also fierce gun battles on the outskirts of the city against Alizerian and Rivenkan troops, who were attempting to take it.

Xerconia is one of the most well-defended cities in Radiatia, and has more RFA military bases than any other city.

West Xerconia was also the victim of a SPIRA-orchestrated terrorist attack in which bombs were let off in suburban areas. 17 people were killed.

Another terrorist attack perpetrated in the city by SPIRA was one in which anthrax was released in the middle of crowded Union Square and pumped into the air vents of the Supreme Chancellor Building. This resulted in the death of Supreme Chancellor Ivan Neuleben, so far the only Radiatian Leader to have been assassinated while in office.

In LET 11 Xerconia successfully hosted the Noctur Summer Olympics, becoming the only Radiatian city to do so. The event was held at Komyun Stadium, which was at the time the largest stadium in the world, although has since been superseded many times. It is currently the second largest stadium in Radiatia, after the Engelsia Dome in Das Engel.

Xerconia saw little violence in the civil war, as the city was populated predominantly by communist loyalists. It did see a little violence at the tail end when the Union Army marched in, and some communist loyalists fought back however by this stage Supreme Chancellor Trast Xinhua had declared a ceasefire and the civil war was essentially over.

After the war, the capital was moved to Radii and Xerconia began to decline. Union City became deserted, crime rates shot up and the population dropped dramatically.

Suburbs were abandoned and the city faced major problems with irrigation, dust storms and desertification.

Xerconia was merged into the State of Detzertscha after Alizeria purchased Chiridia of the Radiatian Federal government, however a large buffer zone was created between the new Alizerian border and Xerconia. Despite this there seemed no point in Xerconia remaining a state.

The city has been on the rise in recent years, with Mayor Stephen Allard pledging to clean the streets, stop the desertification and breathe life back into the city. However Union City still remained mostly abandoned and was visited only by tourists who wished to see relics of the communist regime. Battered RPSU flags flew covered in dust for nearly 15 years, unchanged since the fall of communism.

After Xerconia was proclaimed capital again, Union City became Federation City and was rebuilt to house the Federal Government, and modernised.

Xerconia was removed from the state of Detzertscha and Federal Capital Territory took on the same land as the former state of Xerconia, however was not granted official statehood.

Xerconia sits on a tripoint state border (previously a quadripoint), bordering the states of Detzertscha, Ziigrut and Xegfause. Prior to the fall of the RPSU, it also bordered the state of Chiridia, however Chiridia has now become a territory of Alizeria known as Northern Chridia.

As Xerconia is now so close to the Alizerian border, a large buffer zone has been created, with a portion of the former state of Chiridia now incorporated into the state of Detzertscha.

The Federal Capital Territory is perfectly square, but the city is in an area of desert with absolutely no landmarks whatsoever other than manmade ones. There are no rivers or lakes and prior to the building of Xerconia Castle the only thing notable in the area was the intersection of four inter-state highways.

Xerconia has a Desert Climate (Köppen BWk) with long scorching summers and short but freezing winters. Rainfall is extremely low – Xerconia has one of the lowest rainfalls for any major city in the world, however snow is common in winter, although lower than in other cities. Xerconia has over 2,900 hours of sunshine per year, possibly the highest of any Radiatian city. Dust storms are a chronic problem in Xerconia, as is desertification and irrigation, however there are several innovative methods combating this.

Xerconia also tends to have extreme variation in day and night time temperatures. Even in summer night time temperatures sometimes plummet far below freezing point.

The average summer high is 41°C, with an average overnight low of 0°C.

The average winter high is -1°C and the average winter low is -14°C

The highest temperature ever recorded was 45°C, however the city often hits 44°C in summer and has come close to breaking this record many times.

The lowest temperature ever recorded was – 27°C.
