Required reading in your nation

Postby Vesium » Sun Jul 22, 2012 5:06 pm

Are there any books that are considered required reading in your nation? In Vesium here are a number of books in state and private schools that have required reading but only 3 books that MUST be read in all schools by high school seniors. They are political or philosophical and teenagers are forced to read them so that the democracy and beliefs of the nation can be better preserved. The three books they read in 12th grade are
"De l'esprit des lois" (The Spirit of the Law) by Montesquieu
"Two Treatises of Government" by John Locke
"An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" (complete) by Adam Smith

Absolutely nothing. However, it is recommended for everyone to read a lot of stuff, whatever they want.

In religious instruction, the appropriate texts are required reading.
In the Political Science course, most schools will require at least the CEV Constitution, The Prince, Utopia and Discourses on Livy.
Philosophy will often require Ayn Rand, Nietzsche, Aristotle, Plato, Aquinas, and Augustine.
Economics will most definitely have An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations at the very least.

Overall, it depends on what one is taking.

In the TBRE, there are several books that are required reading, most are classics that provide an insight into the lives at the time or those that explore certain key issues.

The government does not require or compel the Hemenstrian people to read any text. The closest thing we have to 'required reading' is the works of Shakespeare, which virtually every Hemenstrian school worth its salt chooses to teach as part of their English curriculum.

As most Hemenstrians are practising Christians of some persuasion, they will have read from, or have read to them, the Bible.

No required reading lists are enforced at the federal or provincial levels. Some school boards enforce required reading while others don't.

All that has to be read is a Shakespearean play - although the school can choose which one (all the English GCSE exams require it). Schools are otherwise free to choose.
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

The government itself can't force anybody to read anything. However, if you are enrolled in a public school, and wish to graduate/pass, it is advisable to read a large number and variety of both fiction and non-fiction books to both learn and stimulate the brain. School-wise, most students are required to read books for Language, Science, and History/Civics classes. These are up to the discretion of the instructors teaching the course.

Almost any student in the Pagian National School System will end up reading "Rise of the Throne" which is a historically accurate epic about the warlord Aliig who became Page's first king one thousand years ago. It is written in ancient Pagian and considered one of the greatest poetic and literary works of all time. Usually it is read in the late secondary school years, when the student is around 15 or 16, because of its complexity and advanced language.

Sonnets of the Wind, an anthology of religious poetry and songs, is also learned by most people, although the non-religious and those who practice something else besides Arish'ka are not forced to.

Religious writings aren't required but advised. Leviathan, by Thomas Hobbes, and Beyond Good and Evil, by Friedrich Nietzsche. They are required in secondary five (the 11th grade). One tale of H. P. Lovecraft is also recommended.

It is unclear if the government actually read them.

Indeed. There is much a student must read as part of their education.
Some examples are:
Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, by Isaac Newton
On the Origin of Species, by Charles Darwin
The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien
