The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes and the most geographically spread member of the order Carnivora.

SIZE: On average, adults measure 14-20 inches high at the shoulder and 18 to 35 inches in body length, with tails measuring an additional 13 to 21 inches.

COLOR: Despite the name 'red fox,' multiple atypical colorations exist. These range from albino & leucistic types on one end of the spectrum to melanistic variants on the opposite.

DIET: Red foxes are omnivorous, and have a highly varied diet. They primarily feed on small animals, such as voles, mice, deermice, groundsquirrels, and gophers. Secondary prey species include birds (mainly Passerines, Galliformes, and Waterbirds) rabbits & hares, small reptiles, invertebrates, and shoretrapped marine life. On rare occasions, they may attack young or small ungulates. Though they primarily eat meat, red foxes will readily dine on plant material, including blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, apples, acorns, some grasses and sedges, and tubers.

FACT: Though generally unsuitable as pets, many are kept in Halsk households regardless. There have even been efforts to produce a domestic strain through selective breeding.

The Grey wolf (Canis lupus) is the largest extant member of the canidae family native to the wilderness. Historically the Grey wolf was found all over Arkiasis, but however due to extensive humanization of the land including hunting and agricultural cultivation in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries has reduced its range to the mountainous region of Mount. Fressmere National Park where wild life is protected from hunting and human settlement. Estimates approximate 5,000 to 10,000 wolves living inside Mount. Fressmere National Park today.

Size: On average, adult wolves measure 105–160 cm in length and 80–85 cm in shoulder height. The tail usually measures 30–50 cm in length. The ears are 90–110 millimeters in height, and the hind feet are 220–250 mm. Wolves in Arkiasis generally weigh 35-45 kg, with females generally weighing 10 kg less than their male counterparts.

Colour: Coat colour ranges from almost pure white through various shades of blond, cream, and ochre to grays, browns, and blacks. Variation in fur color tends to increase in higher latitudes.

Diet: Wolves are carnivorous predators with a diet including of larger prey animals including white-tailed deer, elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, bison, muskox and caribou. Smaller sized animals that may supplement the diet of wolves include marmots, hares, badgers, foxes, weasels, ground squirrels, mice, hamsters, voles and other rodents, as well as insectivores.

Fact: While attacks on humans are generally rare, the Mount. Fressmere Rangers Office advise that all people traveling inside the protected National Park take caution and be aware of their surroundings at all times as wolves are highly territorial animals.

Looks: Resembles a standard European wolf for the most part except for the fact that they are about the size of a tall Alaskan malamute they typically have sky blue eyes. They tend to have the same coloration as a standard gray wolf. They also have broader jaws
Diet: Carnivorous. The same as other wolves.
Fact: They tend to be friendlier to humans than other wolves and are also deeply sacred to the people of Faolinn. All wolves are considered sacred, but the native breed is especially holy in the eyes of the people. Kill one and no law on the earth can save you. They are also believed to be servants of the sky God. Their colors are said to be derived from the colors of clouds which were given to them by the sky God as his most direct representatives so that people could know them by sight.

The National Animal of the Armed Republic of Strangers is the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus).

Appearance: The Griffon Vulture is 93–122 cm long with a 2.3–2.8 m wingspan. The males normally weigh 6.2 to 10.5 kg (14 to 23 lb) and females typically weigh 6.5 to 11.3 kg (14 to 25 lb), Hatched naked, when fully grown it has with a very white head, very broad wings and short tail feathers.

Colour: It has a white neck ruff and yellow bill. The buff body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers.

Diet: Scavenger

The reason why the Griffon Vulture was chosen was because it was a symbol of the Revolution Griffins, one of the original freedom fighter groups and later became associated with the revolution and Freedom War. It is meant to show riding on the strength of those that have passed (the United Federation, which we seceded from) as well as strength and perseverance (a Griffon Vulture commonly waits for two days for an animal to die before fasting upon it).
A sky burial done by Griffon Vultures is considered a (minor) state honour. The state owns the three of the largest habitats of the Griffon Vulture and park rangers will accept official passes to bring the body to a special location where the vultures normally feed. It is possible to hold a private sky burial but it is unlikely one will only get Griffon Vultures to feed upon the body due to the widespread number of other scavengers.

The Dek Avel is the national bird of the ISKA. The name of this bird is in Basic and translates into literally into English as "Dive Bird". This name derives its origin in Naval aviation warfare where pilots would dive into oncoming fire from enemy ships to drop their payload and swoop out at the last moment. The Dek Avel has a similar behavior diving from high above dodging through the trees to capture their prey.

Taxonomy: The Dek Avel is a bird of prey in the Accipitriformes order, most closely related to its distant cousin originating on Earth, the Secretary Bird or Sagittarius serpentarius. The two birds are in the same family Sagittariidae but differ in genus. This is due to the different beak shape and the three clawed fingers on its wings. The Genus name is Krux (Basic spelling of the Latin word Crux, English meaning Cross) which is reference to not only the constellation on the ISKA flag but also how the long tail of the Dek Avel causes the bird to make the shape of a Latin Cross while flying. The Binomial name of the Dek Avel is Krux Anura, Anura coming from the order name for frogs, recalling the bird's skill as a hunter of amphibians.

Description:The Dek Avel is instantly recognizable just like the Secretary bird as having an eagle-like body on crane-like legs which increases the bird’s height to as much as 1.4 m (4.25 ft) tall. Body weight can range from 2.1 to 4.5 kg (5.6 to 9.9 lb) and height is between 86–140 cm
(34–55 in). Total length from 145 to 192 cm (56 to 75 in) and the wing-
span is 191–220 cm (75–87 in).

The Dek Avels Primary flight feathers are a blue grey with white band three quarters of the way to the tip, and a red band just inner of the
white on the underside of the wing. The Secondary flight feathers are a plain, flat blue-grey in colour. The Covert feathers on the underside of
the wings are blue with a white band. This gives them a spotted look
when seen together. Above the tarsus are where the leg feathers end at the ankle joint, there a band of red cuffs the end feathers. The under-
belly of the Dek Avel is white with blue-grey bands of varying thickness.
A crest of red adorns the head and top of the neck and the underside of
the neck is black, sometimes with white spots. The beak is also black matching the colour of the talons. The un-feathered legs match the primary colour of the rest of the bird. Featuring very little sexual dimorphism the only distinguishable difference between male and
female appearance wise is in the tail. The feathers on the tail of a male
Dek Avel alternate in thick bands of white and blue-grey, while the
female has a flat blue-grey tail.

Cultural significance: In The Koda Agency the Dek Avel is the national
bird because it culturally represents vigilance and military might, as well
as the rise and pride of the trade network which the young nation stands on.

The kybukj, or “Zelsen Fox”, is a species of fox native exclusively to the islands of the Zelsen archipelago. The word comes from Old Zelse “ki” (“curious”) and “buki” (“canid”). The kybukj has played a major role in native Zelsen culture for centuries, and continues to be featured prominently in folk tales and art among other mediums. It also continues to serve as the most common house-pet of the modern Zelsen home, as is the dog or cat in Earth’s Western societies.

The kybukj is descended from what were a species of Canidae, in genus Urocyon, specifically urocyon littoralis, or the Channel Island Fox, which underwent some small genetic diversification, mostly superficial in nature, but with enough isolation to be considered a new species. Similar to the Island Fox, they are a relatively small species, not much bigger than a common housecat. The more notable differences between the Kybukj and its ancestor is, on average, a lighter and more unified (color-wise) coat, a distinctive white-tipped tail, and a darker fur "mask" around the eyes and bridge of the snout that distinguishes it from other Canidae within the archipelago. Unlike most species of ancestral fox, the Kybukj is one of few to maintain a larger, pack-like social structure, as well as pack hunting behaviour, similar to canine species.

On average, the kybukj’s head-and-body length varies between 48 and 50 cm (10.6 - 11.1 MSK) like its ancestor. Tail length comes to around 11 - 29 cm (2.4 - 6.4 MSK). The average weight of an adult kybukj is about 1 - 2.8 kg (13.5 - 37.7 ZSK)

Interestingly, the kybukj have also adapted to the relative proximity of many of the Zelsen islands with a certain degree of increased proficiency in swimming over their cousins. Many kybukj can be seen crossing between the closer islands in packs, and because of this intermingling, genetic diversity among the inner ring of the archipelago is scarce, while the few species among the outer ring of the islands are entirely distinct from the kybukj.

The kybukj’s role in Zelsen culture goes back as far as the common Zelsen “creation story”, wherein it was said the craftier of the earth spirits took on the form that would become known as the kybukj as they descended onto the world. They formed the first Clans and Councils, and helped create the Council of Greater Spirits or Gods. Mortal kybukj did not side with Gozh during the Spirit-Mortal War, but fought for the Spirits, and were rewarded with the ability to communicate with the Spirit world and sense it more than any other mortal creature.

Because of this supposed close connection with the spirits, they were viewed as something of a revered or spiritual animal by the native, pre-colonial Zelsen people. Some of the worst curses in the native lore came about from trapping or killing wild kybukj, or disturbing their forest homes. “Kybvukj”, that is, “One who eats Kybukj”, was, and is today, a fairly common insult.

The pre-colonial Zelsen Clans consisted predominantly of farmers, however the idea of keeping animals as “pets”, for the sole purpose of companionship, was not commonly held, and most domesticated animals were used for farm work or for providing sources of food. The Bagamazhj colonists, on their arrival to archipelago, already had a long standing tradition of pet keeping, even bringing some of their own across the West Sea, introducing a few new species to the islands. Likely attracted to the apparent reverence of the creature the native people held, and perhaps in some attempt to garner their admiration, it became common for Bagamazhj families to keep captured kybukj as pets as well, and over time the practice passed on, like many other segments of Bagamazhj culture, to the Zelsen people.

It remained after the Bagamazhj colonial government was replaced with the Zelsen Empire. The Kybukj became a symbol of the Zelsen people and the Empire itself, being the standard “royal pet”, and being featured in portraits of the Imperial family or Emperor/Empress themselves (contrary to popular belief, Emperor Shaljeka Skask Avay nor his wife Sjel Skask Nosov, the first Empress, were ever said to own pet Kybukj, nor were they ever pictured with them; that tradition began with Emperor Sjel Skask Vanyto who owned several and was almost always painted with one by his side). From there, it quickly became the “standard” pet of the people of the Empire, especially after the Zelsen Unification and the growth of the Imperial government’s influence.

While obviously practically useless in war, they were used often as "mascots" for troops in the Second Campaign.

Valays Zhjeto Etak's well-known Revolution-era operetta Kybukj Zha Ychjkabazhj Nova Na features them prominently as an analogy for the Zjelsjen people.

While they haven't been bred into a large number of distinct breeds like our domestic dog, the tame variety has a quite distinct character from the wild kind, and a few noticeable physical differences, such as a higher propensity for pied coats.
