The Afterlife (Heaven And Hell)

Postby Augarundus » Sun Oct 04, 2009 9:26 am

How does your nation view the afterlife, specifically heaven and hell?

I realize some nations may have multiple religions, or be atheist, but traditionally how would people view the afterlife?

In Augarundus, the afterlife is viewed in a traditional Judeo-Christian sense, but 'on steroids'.

Heaven is eternal happiness for the few who lived lives of charity and sacrifice. Traditionally heaven is a city of gold with multiple aqueducts.
-With God in heaven are choirs of angels, the Seraphim and Cherubim. Angels and Archangles patrol below heaven, fighting off armies of demons and sinners of Wrath.

Hell is touched upon more often in literature, and is a place of eternal suffering for the sinful. It's traditionally built out of the crushed bodies of heathens. Hell is divided into circles, but not in the sense of Dante's Divine Comedy. There are different circles of hell based on seriousness of crimes in life;
1. Purgatory- technically not Hell, but it's considered suffering in the absence of God.
2. Worthlessness- The average man who commits no serious sins, but does nothing to commend his life. They must ponder for eternity.
3. Greed- Those who commit greed in the sense of spending and hording are sentenced here, and they must steal all that they have left from one another; limbs.
4. Gluttony- Those who can never eat enough are sentenced here. They feed on one another for eternity, their souls embodied in snakes.
5. Wrath- Those who are cruel are sentenced here (mostly murder and abuse), and must fight one another for eternity in gladiatorial games. Soldiers of Wrath are sentenced to attack Heaven for eternity. Always defeated, they must plunge back through four rings of hell to Wrath to fight with one another again.
6. Heresy and Doubt- Those who conspire against and doubt the Lord, their God, are sentenced here to march on flames in a circle, scourging those in front of them. Major heretics are crucified in the center of the circle upon burning stone crosses.
7. Adultery - Those who have committed the sin of adultery rest below Heresy and Doubt, and are perpetually inhaling the gas and flames of the above ring.
8. Treachery- For the worst sinners in eternity, notably corrupt clergy, scandal, etc. are sentenced to hang themselves, choking on their blasphemous words.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Fatatatutians commonly believe that we are responsible for making this life as pleasant as possible for everybody. There's a saying that there are no real angels in Fatatatutti, so we have to do the work of the angels ourselves.

If you live this life properly, in such a way that you're remembered favourably when you're gone, then an afterlife is irrelevant. You've done nothing to be punished for and you don't desire any further reward.

Since many believe the non-corporeal conscience can still exist in your body before your electrical output fades, being absorbed by the earth, they believe that the conscience will remain on the earth as a natural grouping of energies. The result will be the most vivid dream you can have, with all of your friends there and you will be able to experience heaven how you imagined it to be.

Given how nonreligious South Lorenya is, the idea of heaven and hell is viewed as the results of inferior education. Instead, most of the inhabitants believe in reincarnation (which is often preceded by a reward or punishment, depending on whether the person was good, evil, or neither).

When you die, you relive your regrets, over and over again, forever, each time experiencing it as the first.

Maraqueans, by and large, do not believe in the afterlife in any shape or form. They view it as nonsensical and juvenile, and think that it is a product of inferior intelligence and education.

The majority in the Confederacy is agnostic, but they believe in a "afterlife" of sorts. When one of them die, either their full bodies or their brains/head are cryonically frozen in extremely safe facilities powered by modular fission reactors with sufficient stored fuel to last thousands of years, in wait for the time science advances enough for them to be brought back to life with clinical immortality. And also there are some people who believe in quantum immortality.

"Hell" is simply the lack of chance of ever coming back. Heinous criminals and scum tend to be dumped in unmarked graves instead, to never return again.

So does Hellenistic paganism (Hades, the River Styx, all that jazz).

New Olwe, having a Hellenist majority among its citizens, believes in that afterlife for the most part... however, the Elves believe in the Halls of Mandos and others believe in other things, and let's not even get started on ghosts since they would just confuse the issue.

"Send forth all legions! Do not stop the attack until the city is taken! Slay them all!"
>Can I invade other people's regions?

Yes. The practice of "region crashing," where a group of nations all move to a region with the aim of seizing the WA Delegate position, is part of the game. Certain groups within NationStates are particularly adroit at this, and can attack very quickly.
>Once I've taken over a region, can I eject everyone else?

You can try. Invader Delegates tend to have very little Regional Influence, which makes ejecting long-time residents difficult. But Delegates can be as kind, generous, evil, or despotic as they wish. It's up to regional residents to elect good Delegates.

France is home to many religious groups, and thus many different views concerning the afterlife may be found in even a single community. Most are some form of Christianity, but Muslims, Jews, and more are also quite easy to find.

what the nalanuthu teaches about "the" "afterlife" is that, while indeed, the very person that you are, will someday again be born in some form in some way in some place, that there is no SINGLE next life, no life that lasts for eternity, as far as anything resembling a physical form, or being in one kind of place or anything like that. there is instead, a kind of place to rest and recuperate from having lived physically for a while, before the next cycle of life. it is safe, reasonably comfortable while gratifyingly diverse, but not otherwise too much more perfect then ordinary life is. that everyone goes there, if you want to call it a there, though it has no physical presence in time and space. how their kharma comes into is how it seems to each of us. it is the same place. but that place will seem like a hell to those who have formed themselves, in choosing their preferences in such a way, as to have created incentives in this life, for conditions that others have found unpleasant here.

we see all that as kind of automatic and statistical, not dependent on a god or god like beings, though we also believe they exist, one, orders of magnitude greatest of them all, and others, not even so much greater then ourselves. few if any wishing us harm, most neutral and some even quite loving.

but the main thing is, we don't look at anything, any one life or life situation, not what comes next after this life, nor what comes after that, or after that, or after, and so on, as going on for ever in any one place or kind of place or situation.

and it isn't just people from one planet, but all different kinds of looking people, from all over the universe, who are in that same between lives place. so if someone dies with a prejudice against different appearances then what they're used to people on their own world looking like, i suppose, for them, that would make it a kind of hell. but also a learning and growing up experience, just like this life is. that appearances tell us almost nothing.

the other thing i want to point out, is that everything we think or imagine we know, about what no one knows, is, and can only ever be, a matter of speculation.

nontangible realms, are beyond the reach of measuring instruments, as are all things nontangible that aren't direct consequences of tangible phenomena
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"
