What are Prisons in your nation like?

Postby Argo Rhos » Fri Jun 29, 2012 9:55 am

Here in Argo Rhos our prisons are maximum security and often located on remote islands. Crime is low in our prisons as murderers are given the death penalty. We give our life timers a comfortable life. The cells are small, but, often come with anything you want, (TVs, books, etc). Prison's have their own communities made up of the dregs of society. Violence is mostly uncommon, but, murders do happen. In the event of a prison murder the murderer will be thrown into Solitary Confinement for life. In our prisons Solitary is often worse then death.

We force all of our prisoners to do brutal manual labor for their entire sentence. If they are lazy, they get more time. If they work hard and do not complain, they get out faster. Usually, if they complain, we say "come on, at least we feed you!"

In Sedikal are prisons are basically large open are court yards will beds on the ground and tarps you set up when it rains but. Food is givin once a day and you are allowed to do what ever you want with it. Security is three sets of elctrice and bar wire fencing 20 feet high and on each corner of the square court yard in a 30 foot guard tower with men armed with M60's (but they shot rubber bullets) and one sniper in each tower allowed to kill anyone in the prison if need be (riots , fights etc. if the rubber bullets are not working to stop the crowd.

We have two types of prisons. Reform institutions and Slashbury

In the Reform institution, All Prisoners are regarded as “Mentally ill” and are placed in Asylum-like conditions. Daily therapy is mandatory and all prisoners are monitored constantly. Once treatment is completed, they are released... but not to their original homes, they are placed in a sort of halfway-house at least 100 miles away from where they originally lived. Prisoners must then get jobs and earn enough money to either settle down in the new area, or be able to afford a train ticket home.

Slashbury is an extremely isolated and fortified community where the worst of the worst are sent, just so we no longer have to deal with them. Sex offenders, Serial Killers, and Terrorists are all thrown together to spend the rest of their days in total isolation from the outside world. They must produce their own food, their own tools, their own homes, every little thing that mankind needs to survive. An elite Gaurd makes sure that the only thing that ever goes in are prisoners, and that nothing ever comes out. Prisoners are given a generous 64 mile area filled with forests and rich farmland, and are monitored from the air and underground to ensure that no one ever tries to escape.

There are no federal prisons. There are city jails which may even apply to federal crimes though, and they are just simple cells; the prisoners do not need to work, and there is free writing equipment in all cells, as well as a blanket, but nothing else; you have to sleep on the floor, you have to use the light from the hallway (close the curtain if you want it dark), etc. Nobody is required to do anything else. For different species there may be different size of jail cells, but it depends on the city what they want to have. Mandatory therapy is banned and the length of your sentence cannot be adjusted by what you refuse to do while in jail.

Every prisoner is given a relatively comfortable cell. However, if they want to eat something else than groats (and occasional vitamin pills, if you count them as food), drink something else than water, read a book, or watch a film, then they must work.

In the typical Saurisian prison, prisoners are given spartan conditions with the typical cell having a rock-hard bed with decent sheets and its own bathroom facilities (i.e toilet and sink) though prisoners do typically sleep with one or more roommates. It is relatively uncommon for guards to physically abuse convicts confined for regular common crimes, though they do tend to just that to convicts convicted of serial murder, rape, and the like, but their abuse isn't as rough as the treatment they receive from their fellow inmates.

A high-security labour camp is usually located on a world with extremely-harsh and unforgiving environment. Inmates are required to perform back-breaking labour, and any disobedience is punished with extreme severity. Living conditions are abysmal, only providing enough to prolong the misery of the prisoners. Alongside malnutrition, overwork and squalid conditions comes incessant abuse by the guards, who are often convicts themselves, entrusted with keeping other convicts down and rewarded with more privileges and better accomodations. Most who are imprisoned do not survive even a year, let alone their full term.

Conditions in medium and low-security penal colonies are better, but these are still places nobody, Sidh or human, would want to spend a few years in. Disobedience is still punished by torture and humiliation, and the labour is still dangerous and hard.

In short, Imperial penal colonies are an embodiment of the phrase: "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time". Horror stories about treatment of inmates in these camps are often enough of a deterrent for would-be offenders.

They tend to look like large chicken coops or wooden shacks full of cheap cots. They're surrounded by fences, barbed wire, guard posts, and land mines. Inside or near the prison camp people are forced to do menial labor in for a matter of time depending on the crime.

The labor criminals do tends to be stereotypically breaking rocks for constructions, mining, the conditions are terrible and the morse crimes get, the more expendible prisoners are considered. Many are sent off to kolkhozy farming sites in the agricultural part of the Good Hope Province (RL American Midwest) during the 3 agricultural months, due to the new Glacial Period it's now sub-polar tundra...so it's nearly a death sentence.

Abuse is common and it ranges from verbal harassment to physical abuse. Female inmates occasionally report sexual abuse. Prisoners are given the necessities of life, a cot, blankets, winter uniforms and 3-day-meals based on vegetables and meat byproducts. However the quality of these commodities depends on the crime and minor offenders get the best treatment.

You can either view it as a cheap prison or as a surprisingly nice Gulag.

Letatian prisons are constructed with an eye towards rehabilitation. Prisoners are assigned to single rooms with bed, toilet, and desk. Every prisoner is assigned a rehabilitation manager in charge of developing a program to resocialize the prisoner. Usually this means group therapy with persons from similar backgrounds, one-on-one psychotherapy, victim reconciliation, and labor. All prison labor is voluntary and compensated. Prisoners usually have access to television, radio, and reading and writing materials, though these may be taken away where they appear to encourage antisocial behavior.

Crime rates are very low here, but obviously we have prisons. Anyway, our Prisons are quite strict, no TV, no marriages etc. but they are far from brutal and they tend to resemble rehabs. Most of our Prisons are less than half empty. We have three specialist prisons as well; Kaneham and Burghbank which are Labour Prisons and Gandpur Hospital for the criminally insane

In the Allied States of Fixdeluxe1,there are three stages of incarceration under the custody of the Department of Justice once convicted(prior to conviction in the judiciary, people on trial are either on bail or in the custody of the Military Police Force). Prisoners are detained and held in large,multi-security prison complexes that are guarded by the Military Police Force, and staffed by civilian employees. They still enjoy most of the same rights as normal citizens, and in times of war there are emergency "convict regiments" in which they can be mustered to.

Minimum Security:

-Open,multi-prisoner "apartment" like dorm rooms. The come fitted with kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and a lounge with certain luxuries like T.V and appliances.A sentence here would most likely result from minor crimes, repetitive minor crimes or for people on a life sentence that pose no threat to the general population and aren't flight risks. There are also common areas with recreational facilities for them to use.

Medium Security:

-Single inmate cells, with batroom and kitchen facilities. Usually the large majority of the prison population falls under this banner. A few hours of free time in a recreation yard each day and communal eating, but otherwise they are confined to their cells. They are allowed a single electronic entertainment device and other personal effects in their cells.

Maximum Security:

-Inmates are confined to single,pre-fabricated cells with one hour of free recreation time per day (alone). They are under constant surveillance and do not make physical contact with any other person for the duration of their sentence dictated under maximum security.

We don't believe in prisons, we're plenty of rehab centres.... BUT for extremely dangerous people/extremely serious crimes we have prisons called "644 Act Jails", used only for people defined "irrecoverable" by judges of crimes like mafia association, homicide aggravated by torture/sadism/sexual abuse/inhuman destruction of the body, aggravated corruption/concussion, sexual abuse, aggravated extortion, aggravated sexual abuse (child abuse), aggravated environment destruction torture and other crimes that provides only life sentence (their use it's prohibited for political crimes).
Actually there is only one "644 Act" facility in whole Thesan, and is on the "black list" of Amnesty International for inhuman treatment of the convicts (for mafia convicts, they live perpetually in isolation till their last day).

BARDON RULG

Current usage: 31,200
Image
Builded in 2046 B.C. during the dictatorial Empire of Lon, was used first as an extermination facility, then become an asylum and after the foundation of Thesan became a maximum security prison.

Prime Magister Rikhart Haviler wants to remember that torture and other corporal punishments are forbidden in the whole territory of the Republic, such as death penalty and noone convict is actually "disappeared" during permanency in this facility, and that this facility is used only for people that has repeated a serious crime (for the first time there are rehab centers).

The Royal Kingdom of Kannap has one prison:
Image
This prison is located in the northern mountains of Kannap. Meaning, that if any prisoners do happen to escape (highly unlikely), then they will die in the surrounding mountains. Despite the name of this prison, it is nowhere near luxury, most people criminals die in their cells.

Image
Each jail cell can hold one person. The Prison of the Skies has 5,000 of these cells. Meaning that the prison can only hold 5,000 prisoners.

Other Most prisoners are held in prisons of Kannap's colonies.

A traditional prison in the colonies of Kannap:
Image
These prisons generally have 40-60 cells, and each can hold up to 3 people. Meaning each of these prisons can hold up to 180 criminals.
The Colony of New Kannap: 50 prisons (9,000 prisoner capacity)
The Colony of LaimFFF: 20 prisons (3,600 prisoner capacity)
The Colony of Northern Aloa: 100 prisons (18,000 prisoner capacity)

The minimum security prisons are like small towns in nice parts of the countryside , there are heavily secured against escape but they are actually quite nice inside, prisoners live in cabins which are like normal houses , there is a shop and some recreation facilities as well as the prison admin building ,a dining hall, a classroom block or two and a library.
Staying at a minimum security prison is like staying at a really strict college with less drinking... much less drinking than college.

Medium security prisons are built like fortresses , they are acceptable inside, there is a foam mattress on a poured concrete bed and all the fittings and fixtures are bolted very securely to the walls and floor . Prisoners can earn the privilege of decorating their cell as a reward for good behavior. The facilities are much the same as a minimum security prison but the design is an all under one roof one.

Maximum security prisons are built like fortresses on desolate and remote planets far from regular shipping lanes , they just barely comply with WA regulations inside, there is a thin foam mattress on a poured concrete bed and all the fittings and fixtures are bolted very securely to the walls and floor . The facilities are much the same as a minimum security prison but the design is an all under one roof one.

These prisons are reserved for extremely dangerous prisoners who have a track record of escapes
