Most of our citizens are deeply mistrustful of authoritarian regimes (including nearly all theocracies); the government generally maintains professional diplomatic relations with the bigger ones out of necessity (and doesn't catch much flak for it), and we generally prefer providing clandestine support and overt endorsement to pro-democracy groups over simply marching in and invading because even if the initial invasion doesn't blow up in our faces we're not generally in a position to expend the necessary lives and resources to engage in uncertain nation-building ventures. Still, the idea of an old-fashioned authoritarian regime setting up shop in Crogach is enough to make many people reach for their sidearms.
