Very secular. It also leans left. Pretty libertarian too.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

Unofficially:
Church of Cotenshire (Protestant) 40%
Roman Catholic 40%
Various Christian Orthodox 20%
Other Protestant <1%
Jewish <1%

Officially, the only two sects recognized are the Church of Cotenshire and Roman Catholicism, so the official religious makeup would be CoC 60%, Roman Catholic 40%, Jewish <1%. Tithes must be paid to either the CoC or a local Catholic Church, and although Jews have legal recognition they still must pay tithes to the CoC.

Nominally, most New Othmanians are Muslim, but there is a sizable minority of atheists, especially in the ruling party, the Turkish People's Falange. President Fazil Kotuk is himself an avowed atheist. New Othman is a secular state. Even the Muslims are not all that devout, being descended from liberal or moderate Muslims who fled an increasingly religious and fanatical Turkey.

About 50% Catholic, 40% Protestant, and 10% other. Not that it matters. Most Provisional Americans are too busy recovering from the Pulse and the many civil wars to worry about trying to follow a religion or shove it down each other's throats.

That's actually because atheists are so terrified of the real world that they escape into cyberspace. There are so many things that atheists cannot understand with their simple minds, not limited to theological ideas, but also things like ethics or moral values. That's why they use the Internet more frequently than normal people: it's the only place where they can hide away, make their own little world, and pretend that all these things that they can't understand aren't important or don't exist. That's also why Internet atheists are always extremely hateful and aggressive towards people with different opinions: when they see non-atheists on the Internet, they feel that their only hideout is being intruded. The arguments they then try to shove down the throats of the "intruders" are always the same ones; they have about five to ten arguments that they use over and over again. Not good arguments, of course, they often include rants about things like the pagan roots of certain Christian myths and traditions, for example, which is as valid as saying that there is no global warming because polar bears still exist. (Note that while they claim to be against all religions, they usually attack only Christianity). These are, of course, the arguments they quote from their primary source of information, namely anti-religious websites made by other frightened people just like themselves. And since they never get out of their own house and only have mock social lives, with Myspace and Facebook being the only place where they "meet" other people, and with the conversations there not being much deeper than "hi" and "lol", they also never learn how to open their minds to the facts that different people have different views.

Hmm. From what I know about Wicca -- which, admittedly, is not a lot -- they're not exactly hardcore capitalists... I'd think that Wicca would be more likely to thrive in a socialist nation like mine. Atheists, who usually aren't bound by the same moral constraints, would probably make up a fair chunk of your population due to the obvious success they would have in your capitalist market.

Certain types of Hellenism (worship of the ancient Greek gods) might thrive in a capitalist country, though... Maryann on True Blood was most certainly in it for herself, and encouraged her followers to behave the same way.

Postby Saxemberg » Thu Oct 01, 2009 10:03 am

The state religion of the Principality of Saxemberg is Satanism. It has a state church, the Church of Saxemberg, dedicated to the worship of Satan, and approximately 80 per cent of Saxembergers are members.

Like most developed societies, the Principality has grown markedly more secular since the Second World War. Recent polls have revealed, for example, that only 30 per cent of Saxembergers believe in the Devil. Another 40 per cent have indicated that they believe in "some sort of spirit or life force," and the final 30 per cent have indicated that they believe in nothing at all.

Church attendance has declined, and many Saxembergers nowadays attend church only for ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings, etc. The Church of Saxemberg itself is badly divided over questions of anti-theology. While some of its members continue to believe in Satan as an actual, spiritual being, others have come to see Him as a mere symbol, like the Statue of Liberty: "Satan is dead," they say. The Church has had to work hard to prevent a schism from developing between these liberal and conservative factions.

In addition, church and state are now largely separate, and the government follows a policy of French-style laicity--but the traditional alliance between throne and altar persists in some ways, even today. The highest offices of government, including the princely dignity, are still reserved for Satanists, though occasional conformity is tolerated. More seriously, the principality enforces strict laws against public missionary activity by minority religious movements, especially by adherents of the Abrahamic religions, and there have been a number of cases recently where Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses have been shot by homeowners for trespassing. In such cases, the usual verdict is "death by misadventure."

As a consequence, the remaining 20 per cent of the population of the principality is a mixed bag, religiously. Recent surveys have indicated that this minority of "dissenters" includes roughly equal proportions of atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Voodooists, and, strangely, Raelians. Pentecostalism and the Raelian Movement are presently Saxemberg's fastest-growing minority religions.

Another peculiar feature of Saxembergish religious culture is the recent growth of the so-called "White Metal" movement among rebellious young people. "White Metal" fans dress in white robes and dresses: boys either tonsure their hair, or grow it long, with "jesus beards"; girls wear headcloths. These bands and their fans seek to shock Saxembergish society by the open display of Christian elements in their dress, their band names, and their lyrics. They are generally seen as weird, but harmless, though there have been occasional rumours of white-metal cultists stealing Satanic babies and secretly baptizing them.

But perhaps the most troubling feature of present-day Saxembergish religious culture has been the growth of fundamentalism among Satanists themselves. Members of this "religious right" denounce the toleration of dissenters, and have even called for a revival of legalized discrimination against non-believers. They also denounce any Satanist who does not follow their own narrowly literal interpretation of the Diabolicon.
