We do not have compulsive military service because we are not a war-hungry people. We prefer more, ah... diplomatic ways of doing things, being descended from ambush hunters and all. Those with an interest in related work may find their way into it, and those who do not care to meddle in the affairs of other nations are not required to try.
Yes, we have national service of which military service is one of the options It starts at age 18 All people required to serve Eight months, after which they enter the reserves of which there is periodic refresher exercises.
Yes, we do have mandatory military service. All able-bodied citizens must serve at least two years in the military between the age of 18 and 30. We do offer alternative services for those who object to military service on the grounds of ethical beliefs though (as well as for those unable to serve due to health issues)
