We have a Counter-Insurgency Task Force at the confederal level that is tasked almost solely with breaking up the remnants of the Falangists and other loyalist forces. They operate entirely undercover. Other police can be authorized to operate undercover, but it is exceedingly rare. No political repression apparatus such as a full-time secret police exist. Police officers are clearly marked and subject to community review and accountability. We had an extensive and brutal secret police network under the monarchy, and one of the famous moments in the revolution was the capturing of their central offices during the battle of Avon. Many documents had been shredded, but numerous identities were nonetheless revealed and quickly made their way into the underground press. The revolutionary forces made little attempt to apprehend and capture these agents- civilian lynch mobs did most of that.

We don't have a secret police in the conventional sense. Local, state, and federal police officers may engage in undercover operations, but officers are still bound by the entirety of the legal code applicable in the regions where they operate and are held fully accountable for any actions outside (or right up against) the boundaries of legality. We also have a fairly comprehensive international intelligence apparatus, both civilian and military, which includes actual espionage and on occasion direct action against sapient beings. This apparatus may not, however, conduct covert operations on our soil. Furthermore, should Crogacean citizens wind up in their crosshairs during the course of an authorized operation on foreign soil they are required to take the following actions:

1) Find a judge and obtain an arrest warrant before attempting to detain any Crogacean citizens.
2) Turn over all such citizens to the appropriate branch of the overt police force for charging and trial
3) If detention is not a practical solution, then amass the appropriate evidence and try the aforementioned citizen(s) in absentia prior to any sort of takedown. The trial in question would still have a judge, jury, defense, and prosecution, but all parties would be sworn to secrecy until the operation is complete or the information is declassified, whichever comes first.

Detention of citizens is subject to strict regulation; those who are arrested must be read their right to remain silent and right to attorney on arrest, must be charged within 24 hours of arrest, must be permitted two phone calls (one for arranging for counsel, the other to be used as the arrestee wishes) within 24 hours of being charged, trials must be arranged within a reasonable time frame, interrogations are taped and the arrestee has the right to legal advice at such interrogations and the right of refusal to answer questions at his or her discretion, and all arrestees must go free on acquittal or expiration of sentence. Any detention in which the arrestee is not afforded the above protections is automatically considered illegal, and the arrestee may file charges of kidnapping against the detaining officer(s) in the event of illegal detention.

The Imperial Inquisition, which is basically the Imperial equivalent of the NKVD or Gestapo, serves as the Imperium's (not-so-secret) secret police force, operating throughout the Imperium to remove external threats such as spies and sleeper cells and internal threats such as dissidents and underground rebels. The Inquisition is divided into three parts. The first part is the Militant Branch, which is responsible for the act of actually eliminating threats and consists of the Inquisition's special brand of Stormtroopers. At times, the Militant Branch operates in support of regular Imperial military units, and wield a variety of foreign-made and domestic weaponry. The second part is the Investigative Branch, which is responsible for identifying threats, investigating them and paving the way for the Militant Branch to destroy the threat with surgical precision. The third part is the Internment Branch, which is responsible for maintaining and operating the Imperium's death camps and also consists of Inquisitorial Stormtroopers. The death camps are the final destination for dissidents, POWs, and those who are designated as racially inferior to proper East Asians.
