During it's 20 years of service, 1963-1983, the aircraft was plagued by a poor safety record that made mishaps habitual, added to the Lockheed bribery scandal that ended some political careers and "the Aces mutiny" in which many WWII veterans like our Top Ace The Comandant de Grup (colonel) Josep Falcó (then 5th wing commander) resigned from the air force in protest to the F104G purchase knowing other NATO's Air forces (mainly Luftwaffe's) type poor safety standard.

It received many pejorative nicknames during it's service. Such: "escombra de la bruixa" (witch's broom), Penis volador (flying penis), Taüt volador (Flying coffin) or Fabricant de vidues (widowmaker).

138 Starfighters were delivered to the Air Force With deliveries starting in 1960. 25 of those via the Mutual Assistance Program. Most F104Gs 101 were locally assembled by SACSA and other 7 by Dutch company Fokker but the 12 TF-104G and the 18 RF-104G were assembled by Lockheed. They reemplaced The F86F Sabres and the F86K Sabre dog.

The Starfighter fleet was grounded several times due that many aircrafts had their wings removed due Fatigue problems and the Air Force even leased 24 USAFs F4Es used by the 111th squadron from 1973-1983.

The Air Force in the Early 70s looked for a successor and took part in the EPAF consortium with other NATO nations that were willing to reemplace their own F104Gs and to coproduce the winner. The selected aircraft was the F16A/Bs. The first F16s deliveries startedin 1980 F16s entered in service in 1983. at the same.
