James Strachan, Prime Minister of Stormaen from 2003 to 2005, is the only prime minister to have never contested an election (win or lose) whilst serving in the office.

Minister of Finance from 1996, Strachan came to office on 1st October 2003 as the compromise candidate of the left-wing and centrist factions of the Stormaen Labour Party. Despite opposition demands, he held off on calling a snap election in Spring 2004. This would prove a mistake as his premiership and party slipped ever downward in opinion polls.

Six months out from a general election, dogged by low approval ratings and accusations of bullying, Strachan was challenged for the leadership by his health minister Nick Dunn. Considered an unlikely proposition at first, Strachan's reaction to the challenge (to fire the "disloyal" Dunn) saw his popularity hit its lowest ebb. Despite winning the first round of the party caucus vote, Strachan was quietly informed he did not enough support to win. His Cabinet, one-by-one, pursuaded him to resign rather than drag the party into a civil war in the run-up to an election.

Strachan duly resigned on February 2, 2005 and was replaced by Dunn who went on to become the youngest prime minister in history – and the shortest serving: Labour lost the election.
