The last period where my country was not a democracy was during the right wing colonels junta 1955-1967.
In the April 21st coup by the a group of right wing hardliner colonels with CIA support. As, it was feared a communist victory in 1957 general election.

The dictatorship was characterised by right-wing cultural policies, lost of the social gains by the social democratic governments, restrictions on civil liberties, and the imprisonment, torture, and exile of political opponents.
In the 60s the Junta had to turn from a hardline dictatorship to a softer one as in 1959 western nations demanded political conscesions if the Junta wanted to get a badly needed loan as such the main non communist oppositors were freed, repression against democratic opposition had to be reduced and censorship was reduced too. And, civilian government had to put in charge.

In, an attempt to renew its support in a referendum in 1966 failed referendum. and contestation increased. In 25th "free municipal elections" 1967 in spite of being rigged showed that the junta had lost support but tried not to resign. So contestation increased even more. In september 13th 1967 the captains coup overthrew the Junta. And, a provisional government was formed with the goal of restoring Democracy. In the first free elections gave the victory to social democratic opositor Joan Fuster.

The Junta proved unable to deal with the 50s-60s problems like: the Túria floods, quick chaotic growth, economic mismanagement, migration wave, tourism arrival or the lost of support by the church and the middle class.

The Junta was seen with incomodity by Western European NATO and EEC valencian candidacies. Indeed until junta's fall Valencia did not join both organizations in 1971 and 1973.
