HISTORY

Named after Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez prior to visiting the Americas. Spaniards constructed small harbor villages and agrarian towns which later grew into bustling cities. In 1784, Cortez gained independence from Spain and a monarchy was established.
A Catholic monk named Miguel was traveling across the isles to convert people to Christianity, but he arrived at a village that was subject to a tyrannical lord named Senor Conteco. The monk battled and overthrew this lord and became the hero of the village, and to this day is known as San Miguel, named after him.
