Languages Taught in Schools

Postby Dashiopolis » Wed May 30, 2012 3:38 pm

Which languages are most frequently taught in your nation's schools (including the native tongue)? Are they mandatory or optional? Do you teach reading, speaking, writing, or all three?

Dashiopolian schools are regulated by the provincial government, but they all have established the same general set of rules.

Primary schools (Ages 3-14) teach Dashiopolian reading, speaking, and writing. Each student also takes either English or Equestrian reading, speaking, and writing.

Secondary Schools (Ages 14-18) teach advanced Dashiopolian reading, as well as advanced English/Equestrian reading and writing. Other foreign languages available at this level (optional) are generally varied, but include French, Spanish, German, and Latin.

Colleges (optional, 19+) teach advanced Dashiopolian reading and writing as well as pretty much any other language in the world. It depends on the college.
Note: I'm just back from a hiatus, and I've decided to start Dashiopolis from scratch. Kindly disregard almost everything that this nation used to be! <3

The mandatory secondary languages taught in Britannia are German and Japanese. Which one is taught differs from area to area.

Though, any language is taught in our schools. If the student is willing to take the extra class, of course.

It depends on the province, but all teach Saurish, the official language.

In Draecorein, students must also learn Modern Draekonian. Ancient Draekonian is offered.

In other provinces, the native language of the province is usually offered, except in Arngrankwia and Reinuuss Island, where the native languages are Saurish.

Many schools offer English as a foreign language.

Colleges offer all of the most prominent foreign languages.

National languages are bold

In Middle School (Ages 12-14), is when languages begin to be taught. English is a MUST along with Lukquan. Both of those languages have to be mastered by the end of High School IAges 15-18), or you don't graduate.

These are the languages taught from Middle School through High School: Pittish, Syko, Aldorenese, Espamlockian, German, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, English, Cu'uardin, and Lukquan (Lukquan is only taught to those who are not from Lukquarel, or speak another national language, as Lukquan is the "mother tongue" here.

All students are required to take English as a language in school. If you already speak that language fluently, but not Lukquan, you take that instead. If BOTH are already mastered, you can choose another language to take in it's place (not required for graduation). Along with the required languages, another one must be chose. You take this class throughout Middle and High School, but if you fail, you will still graduate.

The languages listed above are not all available in every school district, but a minimum of 3 language classes must be eligible for a student to take (not counting English and Lukquan) from the list above. If a language is taught that is not on the list above, the school district's funding will be reduced to $0 until they dismiss the program. Most schools offer 6 languages (apart from English and Lukquan), which are commonly French, Pittish, Aldorenese, German, Syko, and Cu'uardin.

Primary schools teach Latin since it is the official language and they also offer classes in other commonly spoken languages of the region that they are in.

Secondary schools continue the Latin language and commonly spoken language education of students and offer introductory and intermediate language courses in foreign languages.

The university offers language courses from an introductory to advanced level in every language known to our civilization.

All languages courses cover both the spoken and written forms (where a written form exists) of the language.

Since 2012, Norwegian (Nynorsk) has been the only language taught in Zokorian schools, from Kindergarten until Year 12 (Zokorian equivalent of 12th grade or senior year)

Prior to that, English was taught as a mandatory subject other than Norwegian. Now it is taught as a foreign language (although no longer mandatory) alongside German, Danish, and French.

Secondary languages are optional but very helpful for dealing with immigrants, and may include (yet are not limited to) Non-YellowApplan English (focuses specific regional dialects available at some institutions), Spanish, Japanese, Latin, Arabic, Lebanese, Hebrew, Klingon, Hylian, Elvish, Trololo, Torvaldsian Object-Oriented English, Hipponian, Equestrian, and various others, all available as electives (and may be required for specific occupations, especially with the YellowApple Department of International Relations, the Department of Domestic Relations, the Aerospace Marines, the Domestic Security Corps, or the Department of Corporate Operations / YellowApple, Inc.

The Ceronic education is a rather complex and touchy subject in Cirona.

There are four types of curricula for primary and lower secondary education, but only two types of curricula for upper secondary education and matriculation.

The four types of curricula in primary education are the French curriculum, the English curriculum, the Sejuhan curriculum and the Chinese curriculum.

In the French primary education curriculum, French is used as the sole medium of instruction. English is also taught, but only five hours per week. In the English primary education curriculum, the reverse is done - English is used as the medium of instruction, and French is taught for five hours per week. These two curricula introduce Sejuhan or Mandarin Chinese in Cours 5/Year 5.

The Sejuhan and Chinese primary education curricula are slightly more complex. The Sejuhan primary education curriculum uses Sejuhan as the medium of instruction, and depending on the school's preference, either English or French would be taught along Sejuhan for five hours per week. In Darjah 3, the language that had previously been taught will be switched to the other language. The Chinese primary education is even more complicated. Hokkien Chinese is used as the medium of instruction with either English or French taught alongside for five hours per week, before Year 3 (3年級), where Hokkien Chinese will be replaced with Mandarin Chinese and the previously chosen language will be replaced with the other language.

The lower secondary education curricula are slightly more simplified. There is still four curricula, the French curriculum, the English curriculum, the Sejuhan curriculum and the Chinese curriculum.

Like previously, the French curriculum uses French as the medium of instruction. English is a mandatory subject also, and is taught eight hours per week now. A large variety of languages are now being offered, rather than being limited to only Mandarin Chinese or Sejuhan. Again, the reverse is all true for the English curriculum.

The Sejuhan and Chinese lower secondary education curricula once again are more complex. The Sejuhan curriculum is conducted through the medium of Sejuhan, however four hours per week are dedicated to English and French each. The study of a foreign language is now available, including Mandarin Chinese. The same is for the Chinese curriculum.

The upper secondary education curricula totally simplify the education system. The Chinese and Sejuhan curricula are eliminated, and the remaining French and English curricula remain. All students that went through the Chiense and Sejuhan curricula now have to integrate with the French or English curricula. The upper secondary education curricula is often target of criticism, as it places the previously Chinese and Sejuhan taught students at a disadvantage due to their presumably weaker knowledge in either French or English.

The French upper secondary education uses French as the medium of instruction. English is now an optional subject, and if chosen, like any other foreign language and subject, four hours will be dedicated to it. In the English upper secondary education curriculum, English is the medium of instruction. However, unlike its French counterpart, French is still a mandatory subject, with four hours dedicated to French.

Matriculation is offered in both French and English. Both curricula do not mandate any subjects other than those required of the students to get into their desired tertiary education. The only difference between the two curricula is the medium of instruction and the universities that recognise their diploma. For example, while Daneu College recognises both Le Hormat (French tertiary education entrance diploma) and The Hormat (English tertiary education entrance diploma), Université Reuve only recognises Le Hormat and Noules Liberty University only recognises The Hormat.

The Ceronic government is currently looking at ways to simplify the education system.

Common foreign languages taught in Cirona include Spanish, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Dutch and Grittonian. All "dead langauges", such as Latin, are only taught at tertiary level, or in interest classes.

All through school, the trade and government admin language of Esperanto is taught alongside the native Au'sum. English (my OOC first lang.) is only spoken by the poor rural population although more and more khami is replacing this. French, Latin, Veran Russian and Elideth are languages in our region that are widely taught as options. Corrospondence courses are avalible in many other languages.

EDIT: This is the old system but since the last day or so -as evidenced by the new flag and classification- this has gone to the err... fan and the only school accessible to Paroli Nun! is teaching its students basic urban conflict and as far as language goes a rapid learn and use language devised some time ago by Asterix University called RapidaLingvo.
